What's great about it: Easy to use.
What's not so great: Does not heat water. Must fill with hot water.
This is a great carpet cleaner. I shared the cost with my son and his wife and between the two families, we have used it on carpet three times - including on blue crayon (on white carpet)! Also cleaned stairs and 6 dining room chairs and scrubbed the vinyl in the kitchen using the squeegee attachment. It did a wonderful job on everything. The color of the water in the "dirty" tank was disgusting! The only drawback is that it doesn't heat the water. (You must fill the "clean" tank with hot water). Nevertheless, I highly recommend this cleaner.

What's great about it: Upholstery cleaning attachment
What's not so great: Cleaning, drying
I am generally the person to find ways to make something work when possible, but in the case of the Hoover Max Extract I found that my efforts were simply time wasted. I am also one to write a good review when something deserves it. This is not one of those times.
In short, we found this carpet cleaner to quite simply do a very poor cleaning job and to leave the carpet extremely wet. We tested in a few areas of the house and found the results to be the same. The cleaning job was far from rushed. In fact, I spent nearly an hour cleaning approximately 6'x15', going over the area slowly, following the directions carefully, and continuing to go over the area for a minimum of 8-10 'drying' passes. Not only could you not tell the cleaned area from the non-cleaned area, but the carpet was left very wet. In fact, it took over 12 hours for the carpet to dry. Damp we expected, but wet was not acceptable given what this can do to the backing and pad.
It takes a lot for me to return an item- I would prefer to find a way to make it work. However, this one is going back.

What's great about it: cleans carpet and hard surfaces
What's not so great: quality could be a bit better but still like this thing!
Works as good if not better than the Bissel commercial unit similar to the rug doctor. Ckeans my carpets and hard-wood floors perfectly. No Complaints what-so-ever.

What's great about it: The ease of use, the cleaning of the unit, and the rug being almost dry when the job is done.
What's not so great: Water tanks need refilling often.
In the past, I owned a Bissell Proheat. At the time I thought it did an okay job, but it was messy to change the water and dump the dirty water out. It was also a pain to take apart and clean when I was done cleaning the rug, lots of screws to take out.
I got rid of the Bissell when I bought a Kirby vacuum with a rug shampooer attachment. This did a better job than the Bissell, but there were suds everywhere and I had to wait for the rug and the suds to dry so I could then vacuum the rug to extract the dirt that the shampooer had loosened up.
I then rented a Rug Doctor a few times. This did a better job but was heavy to lug around and since I was paying by the hour, I had to rush the job or pay more for the rental.
I purchased the Hoover Max Extract after reading about it in Consumer Reports. I am extremely happy with the job it does and the ease of use. The Hoover is much easier to change the water and cleaner than the Bissell. When I am done cleaning, the Hoover just snaps apart for easy cleaning, even the rotating brushes just pop off. The only downfall that this machine has, in my opinion, is it seems I have to change the water often. It has been a while since I used the Bissell, so I am not sure if I had to change the water as often. The rug is much drier with the Hoover when I am done than with any of the other rug cleaners I have used.
I have 2 dogs that run free in the house, so the rug gets soiled by muddy paws and their running around and playing, so I have to clean the rug often, and I won't dread the job nearly as much now as I did in the past.

few downsides. Unsure if dirty water tank is easy to spill or may have small leak when moved, but no prob in machine. Clean water tank may leak a little if you use its handle to help move the machine. Little heavy, but less than expected. Cleans great.

What's great about it: Ease of emptying dirty water and filling clean water and detergent
What's not so great: Doesn't come with a person to do the actual work for me. haha. Ok, at this point..I see nothing wrong with it.
I have had SEVERAL shampooers, rug cleaners, whatever you want to call it over the years. They all end up getting used A LOT. I have gone to Other places (BIG department stores) If you lose the receipt or the cleaner stops working before the regular insurance, you have to call the company. At best buy you just go directly to the store. They will tell you what to do. If you can't find your receipt, no problem. They have you listed. The insurance is worth every penny and really not that expensive if you figure out yearly cost.
The unit is easy to use. Easy to fill and empty.
So far it works very well.
We definitely use it. It also can do a deep clean, or rinse only

so my shampooer died today and I had to get a new one... MAN! i didnt know what i was missing lol. I used to have a bissell proheat 2 pet select or something like that, but today I got a hoover max extract 77 b/c it has a hardwood floor cleaner option too and half of my house has carpet and half has hardwood.. I run a dog rescue and have two toddlers so the carpets can get pretty messy. I shampoo my carpets once a week with the bissell and once a month I have professionals do it. After using the hoover, I dont think ill ever have to have the professionals again. This thing is AWESOME. my carpet looks brand new :)

What's great about it: Everything so far
What's not so great: It's a little heavy, but I think that's because of the sturdy quality.
I went to shampoo the carpets last week and my shampooer did not want to work. With pets, kids, and practically white carpeting (what was I thinking there?), it's a necessity in my home and I use it almost as much as the vacuum. I went online, read reviews, and decided this was the one for me. I am so happy I made this choice and can't say enough great things about this unit! It's user friendly, easy to clean and fill, and somehow managed to get 5 year old coffee stains out. I haven't used it on the hard floors or stairs yet, but unbelievable results on the carpet and I can't imagine I'll be any less excited when I hit the rest of the house.

After purchazing two bissels and them both breaking... I picked up this machine... all the areas that broke on the bissels do not look like a problem on this machine. It is easy to clean... and works well... while the bissels picked up more quickly... this machine does the job and does not seem like it will break down... I like the fact that it does not require a belt that is impossible to replace. It is heavy... so it is not made for my 93 year old grandmother... but allows for a nice work out... so.. so far so great.

What's great about it: Easy to use, does a great job
I bought this a couple of weeks ago after my 12 year old Hoover deep cleaner finally bit the dust. I researched many different models and decided on this one because of all the features it has & it was on sale for a great price.
Very simple to put together. Because of some of the reviews I've read, I decided to do a very small spare room we have. It did a fantastic job cleaning the carpet however it left it very wet, took about 5 hours to dry. My old deep cleaner only took about 1/2 hour to dry.
I was ready to pack it up & take it back for a refund. But then I thought about the fact that my old cleaner only had two spray nozzles & I had to go very slow to get the carpet clean, as to where this one has five. I decided to give it another try. This time I did a heavy traffic area and picked up my pace, what a HUGE difference that made. This time it only took about an hour to dry and the carpet came out beautiful! Really fluffed it up & made it soft. I could not believe how much dirt my old cleaner was missing. There were old stains that this new cleaner got out with no problem. This cleaner also has an auto rinse feature which I love and it is so easy to clean out and pack away. Glad I decided to give it another chance. This one is a keeper!

What's great about it: Cleans stains even set in ones better than a PRO
What's not so great: has a tendency to leak or spit out foamy water if you lean it back too far while powered on.
Ok so, How to describe this carpet cleaner can only be done in 2 words "MIRACLE" and "WORKER"
This thing is a work-a-holic. For starters, after it's done shampooing, I've never seen another carpet cleaner suck up so much water. If you have one and wrote a bad review because it doesn't suck, Then have it replaced, plain and simple. Nothing does better.
For second, I spilled a bowl of chili, STUPIDLY, on my living room carpet about 3 months ago, did some reviews, had chosen this cleaner to purchase, though Walmart was out of it. I asked them when they would get it in,utes and they said it's on a truck, they just haven't unloaded yet, come back tomorrow night and I'll give you 10% OFF, SO I figured good deal, right? More than I could have hoped for. 24 hours later, after the chili had SET IN to stain, This system had taken it out in less than 5 minutes. I could NOT BELIEVE IT! There's not a sign of it whatsoever.
Last night sometime, I don't know when, my pup must have spilled a cup of red fruit punch or cherry (I forget which I bought lol) Kool-Aid and splattered it specks all over the carpet, AND my white bed sheets. I could have absolutely slaughtered him right here this morning when I found out. The stains had already dried because this was sometime last night and completely and totally set in once again. dumped the cold water out, replaced with hot steamy water (I can do this because the cleaning solution tank and water tank are two different tanks inside the same unit!!!!!) and again, less than 5 minutes, and you can't even tell the stain was even THERE!!!!!!!!!!! NOTE: I did this less than 15 minutes ago, and the carpet is BARELY damp on bare feet.
All in all, I've never seen a carpet cleaner like this one in my life. I've hired professionals at my other apartment, and after 3 runs, they needed to still replace the carpet...I had rented rug doctor out 4 times in a month...and I don't think it picked up a single thing. This unit could have probably SAVED me $1,100 of carpet replacement in the one I just moved out of, now that I think about it.
Summary of this Cleaning unit: BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT! You won't regret it.
PRO's:
1) Suction that sucks up probably AT LEAST 90% of the water it lays down, If not more.
2) 2 seperate compartments in the main clean tank each for Plain water and cleaning solution mix.
3) Dirty tank is extremely easy to remove and replace, dump out, and also open up and clean. The thought behind this alone is Flawless. Only thing I wish it had a rubber seal between the two halves of the dirty tank so when you carried it, you didn't have to keep it almost level)
4) Dirty tank and Clean tanks have handles that make them easy carry.
5) Every single part of this unit can virtually be taken apart for easy cleaning if you need.
6) Filter check is directly under the dirty tank, so easy to get to and clean. Impressive.
7) 11 brush wheels and 7 brushes per wheel to make 77 individual brushes that dig, agitate and clean. (never go for a drum with the wave brushes on them, THEY SUCK)
8) I said something similar to this above, but different: each brush wheel can independently be removed and cleaned thoroughly if needed.
9) The pressurized cleaning of them unit SERIOUSLY sprays it down deep, I feel as if I'm even cleaning the PAD underneath the carpet.
10) Finally: The unit has 3 scrub settings, small pick up, gentle scrub or power scrub, AND also the ability to RINSE!!! Most cleaning units will wash and shampoo and pick up, but don't have the ability to RINSE. Which is why each time you shampoo your carpet, it seems to get dirtier quicker and harder to clean as well each time. The shampoo ATTRACTS dirt and dust and grime like a magnet attracts a paperclip. The ability to rinse, believe it or not...keeps your carpet cleaner...LONGER because the shampoo is not there to attract dirt anymore. So this is a FANTASTIC Feature.
NOW for the CONs: The list of features even if you compact them as much as possible. GOOD outweighs bad by a landslide.
1) ALL PLASTIC PARTS....This isn't as bad as you may think. I've had it for 3 months, And really the plastic is pretty durable. Yea, I mean you could have all metal, or partly metal, but that would just make it that much heavier. I haven't had one problem with the plastic parts, ad as long as you use common sense when cleaning, or tightening bolts, etc...You should never see an issue with this.
2) It is a bit bulky, slightly heavier than I think is needed. but it's not too bad.
3) the hose for attachments is nice and long, My attachment spray switches do get stuck in the open/spray spot sometimes, and I've gotta fiddle with it. I need to buy some WD40 and spray just a little, see if that'll fix it and help it when I let go of the trigger.
4) The brush attachment seems to lose a LOT of spinning/suction and barely has any power, I'm not sure why.
5) I don't think there is a 5?
-----------------------------
With the list of overall CONS of this unit, I can only see 2 of them really relevant. These are Numbers 3 and 4. #3 might easily be fixed with a little bit of WD-40 Lubricating oil. and #4...i'm not sure...vacuum leak I have no idea, but it doesn't seem like it. Overall if #4 bothered me severely, I might have considered putting a trouble ticket in or something, but return it? hell no. #3 bothers me a little, but we'll see if I can't fix it.
Overall Recommendation: 2 thumbs up! And if you don't buy it, you're a dumb*ss lol Just kidding. This unit by far outdoes ANY professional I've ever hired.

What's great about it: Great cleaning, rinse cycle, easy clean-up
What's not so great: doesn't let you know when the clean water tank is empty
My 11 yr old Hoover still works like a charm, but has started leaking from the bottom. I looked to replace it a few months ago and saw the Rug Doctor was the best one out there. Purchased the Rug Doctor and never really liked it! Took the first one back because it left everything saturated, in fact I would bring out my old Hoover suck up the water after using the Rug Doctor. Thinking something was wrong with it, I exchanged it. The second one was a little better at extracting water, but still no where near my old Hoover. And to fill the Rug Doctor up with water/solution was horrible. The MaxExtract must have come out right around the time I was buying the Rug Doctor. I ended up buying the Max Extract 77 and I just LOVE it! The rinse makes such a big difference in the feel of the carpet afterwards! The water collection tank and clean water tanks are well designed and easy to manuever. My carpets look and feel GREAT after using my new Max Extract! Clean-up is a breeze too! The only thing I wish it did was warn you when the clean water was exhausted. My old Hoover did that and sometimes when you are going along cleaning you just don't notice it! It does such a great job, I can overlook that!!!

What's great about it: Comes apart easily for cleaning after the job is done.
What's not so great: Loads of plastic parts.
As far as we know, this model just came out in October 2010 so when we bought it we only found one review for it. We decided to take a chance and bought it. It worked great. The tank capacity on it is larger than some other models so it is not necessary to stop so often. It comes apart easily when the job is done so you can clean it. Normally, we never buy extended warranties but we made an exception this time because of all the plastic parts which are bound to wear out. We think we probably did a better job cleaning with this than hiring a professional because we took much more time with the carpet while a pro would be in a hurry to get to the next job. We think if we use this twice, we will break even versus the cost of hiring a pro twice. After that, we are money ahead with this versus the pro. It comes with some cleaner in the box when you buy it but it probably will not be enough to get through your job so buy another bottle ahead of time.

What's great about it: Easy to get started and 8 minutes to clean and put away.
What's not so great: Plastic parts so be careful to remove parts and put back
I am so glad we bought the Hoover Max 77 Carpet Cleaner! We had a Bissell Steam Cleaner but the motor broke and it was going to cost us 1/2 the cost of just buying another one. I had to wait nearly six months before getting a new one and the carpets were disasterous! We found this one at Walmart. We took a chance because no one had written a review about it at the time.
There are several things I appreciated about this cleaner.
-There were 77 individual brushes, rotating on 11 seperate heads to help loosen the dirt - much better than the Bissell in which all the brissells rotated on one drum. I needed no additional sprays for the ground in dirt. I simply went slower so the brushes could do the work.
-It was extremely easy to remove the dirty water tank and dump. Please note that it is best to carry this level. It did want to leak a little towards the front if I turned it too much up and down. The tank was EXTREMELY easy to clean and dry out.
- The machine was very easy to take apart and clean. The bottom of the cleaner could be removed (where the water is sucked up) as well as the entire brush mechanism (carefully, all plastic). All of it can be rinsed and put back.
- I also appreciated the water/cleaner tank. It removed easily from machine. The cleaner was easy to pour and mix with water (directions on tank).
- the machine was powerful to suck up most of the water leaving drying time much shorter.
- Since we have dogs and old vacuums that do not suck up all the dog hair, I had to clean the filters just to make sure it was sucking up all the water. This was very easy to do as the filter was under the dirty water tank and I could check it after emptying the tank.
A couple of things that were a little more challenging:
- The trigger was stiff and a little hard to hold in, particularly if you want to spray soap and water fowards AND backwards.
- It was loud and had a warning in the manual to wear ear protection if desired.
- It is a little big and bulky. I did not have to pick it up and move it up/down stairs. The hose is long enough for the stairs we have.
- Most of the parts are hard plastic so it is important to handle with some care.
I would recommend this to a friend!
