What's great about it: Excellent Pictures, VR works wonders, Very Versatile Lens
What's not so great: Nothing
I bought this lens when it was on sale with a $150 discount (thanks Best Buy!). Took it out to take photos at a kart race and was able to take some really great pictures with my D3100. I could use it at full zoom while holding in my hand and got really sharp results (no shake blur). The colors were also really spectacular and focus speed was sufficient to track karts as thy passed at high speeds. Really a great lens - buy it, you will not regret it.
I would recommend this to a friend!

What's great about it: Awesome zoom capabilites and quality
What's not so great: Not for close-up shots
I purchased this lens as part of a bundle package when I got my Nikon DSLR 5100. I started off using this lens when I got to my vacation destination and got some awesome pics using it. However, I soon learned for most average shots, to use the 18-55m, that came with the camera. This lens is great for portraits, but at a distance. I used this lens for most of my far away shots that I couldn't get with the 18-55m, and even then they seemed up close. This lens is able to capture remarkable detail! I joke with people and tell them when using this lens, you are able to see what people are thinking due to the resolution. Great lens and plan to learn to use it better.
I would recommend this to a friend!

What's not so great: No negatives
Great compliment to the 18-55mm lens that came with my D5100. I discovered this lens has great clarity in all focal ranges.

What's not so great: Image quality could be a little sharper.
Overall the lens is adequate, especially for the price I paid. However, it seems that a smaller telephoto lens I have produces a much more defined finished product.

What's not so great: A great Lens a little pricy at $399. Purchased without package.
All I can say is that this is a great lens for your bag, and you will find it a great tool for your pictures.

What's great about it: Accurate, fast focus, lightweight, good range.
What's not so great: not as fast as a 2.8 or 1.8 lens but definitely worth the price
So not as "fast" as a 2.8 straight through lens, but also 1/5 the price. Due to the DX format of the lens, very lightweight but still Nikkor quality.
So great lens for a telephoto with a reasonable price.
I would recommend this to a friend!

What's great about it: Great range, quiet and quick.
What's not so great: A bit heavy, $399 is a bit much, catch it on sale.
This lens is ideal for everyday use. The focus is quick and quiet, and the range is excellent. Bokeh is predictable and the image doesnt appear to have any sign of unusual distortion, even at wide angles. This lens very quickly replaced my 35-70mm as the default on my set up. I wish I had the cash for a super-telephoto, but this is a great buy none the less.
It comes with a round hood which clips onto the lens itself which is nice. While its a bit heavier than other 300mm's Ive used in the past, it's not to bad.
I got this lens on sale for $249, and I would say at that price, this is a steal
I would recommend this to a friend!

What's great about it: Allows me to take the photos I want.
Easy to use. Produces excellent photos. Love the fact that when you set the camera to a sport mode, the lens can continue to focus while you are taking the picture. You can get some very nice wildlife / sport shots. The Vibration Reduction feature on the lens does help, especially when you have the zoom near the max. Because it does have a great zoom length, you may want to think about getting a tripod for the shooting subjects that are real far away (such as the moon).
I would recommend this to a friend!

What's great about it: Price, zoomed picture quality

If you have a Nikon DSLR and want a nice, affordable zoom lens - this is the one. My Nikon came with the standard 18-55mm lens, which is spectacular for taking close range pictures. But I found myself limited when trying to snap a pic of something that I just can't get close to. This 55-300mm lens is almost 5.5x zoom, which is a tremendous improvement. Picture quality is amazing, even when zoomed in the full 300mm. It is a bit bulky to carry around. It's significantly longer and heavier than an 18-55mm lens. But there's really no way around that if you want a zoom lens. For $250, I'll take it all day baby. Great stuff.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Bought this lense for my husband, and it was exactly what he wanted. we took it to the Biltmore in Ashville and took some fantastic photos.

What's great about it: Wonderful Image Quality, Easy Use
I am a hobby photographer but I am absolutely loving this lens! I actually received it as a present and it was not the lens I asked for, however I am so glad that he "got it wrong". I find it very easy to use, and the image quality is wonderful. I cannot yet speak for the durability, I have only had it for about a month and have making sure to really take care of it. So far I have absolutely no complaints.
