What's great about it: Great sound and Remote Controlability from a smart phone
What's not so great: Airplay (H.M.G.)
This is a great sounding system. I am using this receiver in Multi Zone mode. Front zone providing 5.1 for my theater system and zone 2 to support outside speakers on my patio. I am using pioneers icontrolAV2 app on my iphone and love the flexibility of being able to control the receiver from my phone since I can already control music on my computer using itunes using a different app. Airplay was a main factor in my decision to purchase this receiver and I must say I am disapointed. Don't know how well it works with non apple applications but the music is out of sync with the other apple airplay devices in my house and if I am listening to Airplay on zone 2 and change the song, it automatically turns the inside 5.1 system on if it is off and switches it's input to Airplay. Hopefull Pioneer can fix this problem with a firmware update.
If Airplay is not you thing, then I would highly recommend this receiver.

What's great about it: Easy to setup and operate entire system. Great price!
Replaced a Denon unit that overheats. Compared with newer Denon and Yamaha models. Found the Pioneer to be easier to set and operate. Haven't gotten all my surround sound setup to fully check out the sound quality. Unit controls everything I want.... Sirius, iPod, DirecTV, BluRay and older plasma panasonic tv. Also supports and easily setup 2nd sound zone.

What's great about it: Sound and internet functions. iAvContol application adds a new dimension in control.
What's not so great: Cost. Setup and manual are obtuse. HDMI pass-through doesn't work for most.
First, the price on this receiver is crazy. It's listed at MSRP at many places and about half that at others (big name retailers...not fly by night sites#. I paid list at Best Buy for the return policy...there is a small number of lemons (everyone has them) and because a lot of people can't get the HDMI pass through to work. I couldn't either but then I found the love for the other features...so I am keeping it.
Pro's
* Sound Quality
* Looks
* Airplay
* Airjam
* iAVcontrol App
* Internet Radio
* Remote is a learning remote for 5 #? or 3 ?# devices
* Build quality is top of the line
Con's
* Price
* HDMI Pass Through #hahahahaha....#
* Manual is HORRIBLE
* Setup is way more complicated than it needs to be
* Remote is laid out poorly
This is a GREAT receiver in many ways. There are some features though that weigh it down. First...I really do like this receiver for audio use..especially because of Airplay and Internet Radio. This is one of the main reasons I went from a basic receiver to a higher cost one...and it works. Sat on the couch using Airplay for about 3 hours. Then another hour or two searching out world music...trance music from Algeria? WOW!
Next is the iAVcontrol application…WOW…I have been waiting for this all my life. This application itself made me want to upgrade. AFAIK this is the least expensive receiver to offer this. This seemed cool be a little gimmicky..until I used it. Love it.
Bad stuff…HDMI pass through doesn’t work for most people…seems like VERY hit or miss. Depends on when the HDMI codec was implemented and even some pretty recent Pioneer TVs won’t work with it. Wound up putting CATV to TV via HDMI then pumping out the sound via digital optical to the 1021. Works fine…but still…that means I have to HDMI out from the 1021 on a separate HDMI port on the TV. I am NOT the only one who has this problem. It’s well documented in many forums.
The other complaint is the manual and setup on this are as complicated as putting as S5W nuclear plant in a single pump line up…yeah, it’s that bad. If the manual was better or Pioneer hadn’t used such bad labeling names this would have been a big boon to newbies. The remote is good because it’s a free learning remote and bad because…well, it’s super complicated. You have to see this monster to understand how they crammed all the commands onto it…one button literally has 7 functions depending on what you push before it…Yikes!
In closing I will say I REALLY like this receiver. It does have some quirks but many do…especially ones that offer all the features as this one. Would you be better off getting a more basic receiver #Onkyo TX-NR509 is $240 shipped at many retailers# and add a Apple TV #$99# for the same functionality? That’s your call. I like the receiver but it can be frustrating for a noob to hook up…but it delivers MOST of what it claims #and read the forums…most competitors have problems too…the Onkyo NR509 has audio drop outs for some).
This product has... Plenty of power for all my needs, Interfaces well with TV, Good multi-zone capability, inernet radio, airplay (itunes), iavcontrol application
About me... practical
I would recommend this to a friend!

Purchased to power audio from Panasonic 42" Plasma and Panasonic 3D BluRay into 2 Sansui 130W - 4way speakers and Polk Audio CS10 center channels. Setup instructions are thorough and somewhat complex. HDMI choices can be renamed, however receiver must be turned off into standby, so if using a Monster powerstrip, it must be in an auxiliary plug not controlled when TV is off. The Panasonic VERITAS function does control the Pioneer receiver On/OFF functions via HDMI. Sound quality is very good with several preset sound combination options. The automated sound setup using external microphone worked very well and sound quality is very good.

What's great about it: easy to set up, sounds great!
What's not so great: buttons on remote are small
Great receiver! Very easy to set up with HDMI cables everything is clearly marked for different components. Comes with an iPod cable you plug in the front of the receiver and shows the song and album right on your TV. Sounds great! Only little drawback was the volume buttons on the remote were a little small but other than that it's a great receiver especially since it was on sale!!

What's great about it: Nice looking unit, good sound, lots of features.
What's not so great: A bit challenging to set up technically and the instructions are not real helpful.
I purchased this receiver about two weeks ago on sale at the nearby Best Buy. I was looking at the vsx 1121 but decided this one was available to purchase without ordering and I caught it on sale for $399.99 instead of the full selling price. I could have purchased it on line for the same amount but wanted to have it and get it set up immediately. There was a learning curve on getting the sound to work. I used the automated microphone that is included and had absolutely no subwoofer output. It did show that it was there on set up and when using a 5.1 dvd....but no sound. I could not figure out the menu to get to the manual settings so I contacted Pioneer support. The first guy just brushed me off and said it was a defective unit and transferred me to a repair facility....I opted to go back to support and had a new person assist me (Kevin) and he walked me through the manual set up menus. The automatic set up....was messed up as it did not have any audio coming from the sub woofer. It was set at a negative 12 which is almost at the end of the scale. After tweaking it to almost a positive 9 to get the full bass level out ...it finally sounds like a full surround sound system. I am only doing a 5.1 set up because I intend on biamping my main speakers.
I did buy the additional wi fi add on and had some issues getting it to program to my wireless system but it is up and running for the last 24 hours. So far, I am pretty impressed with this receiver. I do hope it will be as good as my former Sony that is over 12 years old and still going. I do think my Sony has a bit more power and a cleaner sound overall but am happy with this new Pioneer. It has a lot of features for the money and would recommend it. It is my first Pioneer and I do hope to have good service from it. Here's hoping it is a good unit and doesn't quit within a year as some have stated theirs has.
This product has... Plenty of power for all my needs, lots of features
About me... fairly tech savvy and do enjoy quality sound.

What's not so great: unreliable, malfuntioned after 13 months of use, which is conviently after the warranty is over
Do not trust the reviews for this product. I bought the vsx 1020-k last year and thought it was wonderful until just after the warranty was over, only one year, which is the shortest compared to other recievers in this price range.
Not only the this reciever constantly malfuntions, I cannot watch from any hdmi source for more that 2 minutes before the unit freezes sporadically. as a result I have to unplug the unit over and over again and then eventually I run my video directly to my tv and totally bypass my reciever. There customer service is the worse I have ever dealt with. They do not know their product and are unwilling to help and be sympathetic to custermer needs. also the service tech they recommend are su par as well. they charged me $40 for them to power it up and crank the volume. when I explained that the issue is mostly HDMI, the tech didnt care and rushed me out so he could rip off other customers.
If you want and $500 paper weight buy this product, otherwise look elsewhere for a better more reliable receiver.
also notice that I didn't endorse any other receivers, which shows you the legitimacy of my claim.

What's great about it: Truly great sound, multi-zone capability.
What's not so great: Confusing operation, TV must support AVR switching, Non-stop display scrolling
I got this for Christmas because I was still using the same Sony receiver I bought in 1996. Time to upgrade but I wasn't expecting something this good.
The good:
1. Having all the HDMI inputs in receiver means that all my devices (PS3, DVR, etc.) connect to the receiver and now there's just one cable to put through the wall to the TV instead of a half dozen. MUCH EASIER, and now that I'm refinishing the basement and putting in ceiling speakers and a nice TV, I'm getting another one of these receivers so I have a great little home theater.
2. Sound quality is amazing. I have Cambridge Soundworks speakers I also bought back in 1996 and they were great for music, but now that I'm playing DVDs and Blu-rays through the receiver, it didn't seem like real Dolby Digital. It wasn't -- and that's because of the old receiver. I barely heard the surround speakers before With this new one, I get all the surround louder and crisper than ever before. Even the front sides and center speakers are louder and clearer. As another review said: don't get new speakers just yet. Try the new receiver and you might not need new speakers.
3. Multi-zone capability. It has 7.1 capability but I don't have room for rear speakers, so I'm only using 5.1. I'm taking the other two rear speakers and running speaker cable through the floor to outside, where I'll have those two speakers as an outdoor zone so we can listen to music while outside. Allows for not only separate volume control but also separate input control -- that's right, I can watch TV inside while music is playing outside, all coordinated by one magic receiver.
The bad:
1. Overall pretty confusing to manage if you really wanted to use everything. Fortunately, I only need to hit a few buttons on the remote. On the rare occasions when I try to do more, half the time I can't find what I want to do in the menu that comes on the TV when connected to the TV. Oh well...
2. The front display seems to cycle through different things as if it were an advertisement, and that gets annoying when you're trying to watch TV. I haven't figured out how to shut this off. I went through every option on the menu and still no luck, so I have to just fade the display down to zero. If anybody knows how to get rid of the scroll, please tell me!
3. I had to get a new television. Seriously. My old TV (a 52" Mitsubishi LCD) wouldn't support AVR switching. Whenever the TV was shut off and then turned on, I'd lose the entire picture and had to remove the HDMI cable from the back, put it into a different HDMI port and turn the TV off/on again. Super annoying. And when I successfully got the picture back, an error message informed me that my television did not "support AVR switching." I upgraded to a great new Vizio 55" so I can't really complain. Good thing I had a spare $1,300 around for the TV upgrade or I would be pretty annoyed and probably would have just taken the receiver back.
All in all, this is a great receiver if you want a high-quality home theater system. It might be more than you need if your television is a few years old and doesn't support AVR switching.

What's not so great: Absolutely nothing
I can't even put into words how impressed I am with the sound and quality of this receiver for the money.
I'm sure there are better but I would have to hear them side by side to believe it.
I replaced a Sony with this one. I also have a mid range Yamaha. This Pioneer isn't even in the same class.
If you have even considered this one, get it.
The internet radio and media player from my computer are great additions.
Set up was as simple as plugging in the microphone and letting the receiver equalize the system.
Absolutely no complaints.

What's great about it: Very easy set up, great sound quality, airplay (audio only)
What's not so great: Airplay video support would have been nice :)
I purchase this receiver to update a burnt out Onkyo receiver I started using around 7-8 years ago. Needless to say, the Pioneer receiver was a big upgrade. The automated setup of sound levels worked without a hitch, and I have noticed a much richer, deeper sound envelope than we had before. The Airplay support is a nice plus, and was useful in playing Christmas music from Pandora from my iPhone.
I don't have a direct need yet for the HDMI switching capabilities of the receiver, but am currently running my one source through it without issue. This was an important feature, however, to support potential future upgrades to my setup.
I selected this model vs. the slightly newer one from Pioneer since I didn't think the additional features (broader multi-zone support, built-in Pandora integration) were important vs. the extra $$.

What's great about it: power, sound, its not a cheap sony
What's not so great: a little confusing at first
1. when 1st setting up, plug hdmi cable from "out" in the back of receiver to your t.v. before you do anything
2.hook up all speakers and componants and then plug in
3. to turn off factory demo mode hold down enter while powering on device, use tune ^ button to go to FL DEMO, use preset button to turn demo mode off
4.there are 2 buttons on remote that say receiver , the one you will need to program the receiver is on the right side 5 buttons down(may seem silly but it took me a half hour and almost tossing the receiver across the room before i found the second receiver button on the remote so i could program it
5. if you dont set the front speakers to large and you turn the volume up more then a whisper, the unit shuts down to protect speakers, once u go into the menu and change them to large you can crank it as loud as you want!
6. pre set radio stations; tune to channel wanted then press t.edit guide button then use > to select preset and enter to confirm
i hope these tips help out a few of you so you dont get as angry as i was trying to set this thing up. once all hooked up and programed its an amazing receiver and i would highly recommend it
p.s. the usb port in front will also work for mp3 players

What's not so great: A congested layout on the remote
I went back and forth between this and the comparable Denon receiver. When the price dropped over a hundreds dollars on the Pioneer the choice became easy. I purchased this mainly for apple airplay and the multizone options. I used powerline adapters to tap into my wireless router. I use the downloaded icontrolav2 app and iTunes on my iPhone to control the av receiver, it works great. This thing cranks out great sound. I would suggest you take your time and read the manual thoroughly before you set up it up, I chose not to use the included cd rom. I would definitely recommend this receiver for anyone looking for value and quality.
This product has... Plenty of power for all my needs, Interfaces well with TV, Easy to use controls, Good multi-zone capability

What's great about it: Do the up front work to understand what you are going to need.
What's not so great: Nothing so far.
I did a lot of research before I purchased this. I was thinking Pioneer Elite, but I took the time to read reviews and get everything set up prior to purchase. Air-Play was a big reason I went with this one. I also expanded my WI-Fi network and bought Apple TV all at the same time.
I was amazed at how easy this was to set up. Viewing the videos on Pioneer.com and reading the manual prior to purchase made set-up a breeze.
Things that I did:
1) Viewed Videos, read manuals on-line.
2) Got speakers all set with Banana connectors the night before the set up.
3) Followed the instructions and got all of the connections set up.
4) Researched TIVO website (I am big on TIVO). This made set-up even easier because I was able to have my bluetooth TIVO remote learn everything to start up TIVO, TV, Receiver all with one button on the TIVO remote.
5) Apple TV was a breeze to get connected and working.
6) Ipad App (iControlAV2) - worked flawlessly and with no set up.
7) Have HDMI connections for Wii, PSP3, Apple TV, TIVO.
8) Speaker set up was awesome. I have a 10 year old Bose speaker system - they never sounded better. I do though have to upgrade to get rear speakers to take full advantage of the system. That will come in the next couple of months.
I believe that I was able to get this set so that everyone in the house will find it very easy to use. That was a major goal that I had.
Highly recommend Pioneer.

What's great about it: Sound quality is awesome
What's not so great: Maybe the factory remote
I replaced my 10 year old tired Sony receiver with this one.
Before buying the Pioneer I considered purchasing new speakers. No need to do that. This Receiver blows anything else Best Buy sells out of the water. Spend a couple of extra $$$$$ and you will no be disapointed.
