Michael Omartian is one of the musicians you never hear about, unless you are one, like me, who reads liner notes. Yet, he has contributed to countless major hits. Listing them would take half a lifetime, so will give you a few: Christopher Cross (Sailing, Ride like the wind, Arthur's Theme (The best that you can do)); Donna Summer (She works hard for the money); Steely Dan (piano on most of their hits); We are the world (co-producer and keyboards); Billy Joel (Piano man); Al Jarreau (We're in this love together, Boogie down). He is the first producer to have number ones in 3 separate decades. He is also a multi-Grammy winner. What many do not know is that he is the consummate musician, a highly proficient pianist, and orchestral arranger. In "Movie Moods" Omartian tackles a new subject matetter- several film scores, and, I must say, he does them exceedingly well. The music is beautiful, tenderly and skillfully arranged, and the performance is flawless. The recording is pristine. The piano playing is just beautiful, the orchestral arrangements sublime. But, here comes the big kicker! Do you love the orchestra? Omar played it all HIMSELF! What an incredible musician, a true genius. Kudos to the recording engineer, Terry Christian. It is so well recorded; close your eyes, and you are in front, center seat! In the 80's, Michael Omartian recorded a classical tour de force called "Conversations". I hope he re-records this using today's technology. I really hope he decides to do a major film score soon. This is music, GOOD music! The best pieces, in my humble opinion, are "Postcards" (from Benjamin Button) and "End Titles Theme" (from Lady in the Water) Highly recommended! Beautiful music that deserves a permanent spot on your iPod or on your CD player.
