What's great about it: Cheaper than a new TV
What's not so great: needing it.
Wife wouldn't upgrade tv in living room so I had to buy the box to be able to watch anything. Got tired of paying high rates for satellite to watch the same things for months at a time. Now we can watch tv for free and it's not reruns.
I would recommend this to a friend!

What's great about it: nice looking product

I purchase a pair of KCPI DTV converters 4 months ago, I started used them and operation looked fine, but I started noticed weird performance:
- it suddently stop displaying written information like settings menu screen.
- If I change volume with remote control, it seems that it resets the converter, looses the image and get to a default channel, so no way to change volume with remote control.
- Unit stopped working after rebutting itself several times while we were watching the TV, that was an unhappy afternoon.

I am returning them as it is a poor design.

What's great about it: easy setup, fair price
What's not so great: Can not manually add channels or retain previously found channels.
We actually bought this same convertor from Tiger Direct years ago when you could still get the coupons from the gov't. It does the job just fine. Looks to me that a lot of people don't know how to set these up. Plug a GOOD OUTSIDE antenna in to the 'F' connector on the back. Plug the output into the into the antenna input of your TV and tune it to either channel 3 or 4, depending on the switch setting-then LEAVE IT THERE!
Also, it's digital tv-instead of getting a little noise or 'snow' if the signal is weak, it pixalates or flat out goes blank. There is no in between with digital.
My only complaint is that I cannot add a channel I know is there but cannot see. Also when conditions are good across the lake and I can see Toledo or Detroit, if I do a re-scan later, it forgets them. But I haven't seen a digital TV yet that doesn't work that way. Annoying.
I should be able to punch in a channel and save it, regardless of whether there's a signal there or not. And remember it.

Set up was easy. Once connected to the the TV, the box did the rest.

I bought mine just over a year ago and after reading the other reviews I am surprised that mine lasted as long as it did. I get no text on the menu and absolutely nothing using the channel guide. I still get a picture so I guess I can count myself lucky based on the other reviews; maybe the rest of the box is ready to die soon. This is the worst product I have purchased from Best Buy. Like others I wish I could give it a negative rating after spending hours playing with the box trying to get the OSD to work again. I don't know the people who rated it above 1, but I am suspicious that they may work for Best Buy or Apex. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. BE SURE TO B**** TO THE BEST BUY MANAGER WHEN YOU SEE ONE.

What's great about it: Decent analog picture
What's not so great: I'm sure there are better quality boxes out there
IMO, this box has just one purpose...to convert over-the-air digital signals back to analog to use with a non-HD TV's Antenna IN. In this regard, I have no complaints. Use good quality RF cables. Also, an amplified antenna can't hurt. There is no such thing as a 'HD' antenna. I suspect that perhaps some people try to use this product for more than its basic function. That's my two cents.

I thought that I should have been able to run an antenna through this converter in order to hook it up to my receiver and play video/sound through that connection. Nothing in the instructions told me I could not hook it up this way, but after hours of trying every configuration I could think of, nothing worked. I don't know why they can't make something to process the signal from an HD antenna and convert to video/sound through even RCAs so I didn't have to run the antenna directly into the TV.

I have had a day and a half and already starting to cut off by itself. Had the Apex model for three years then dumped out on me. I can take three years but a day and a half??? I should of did more research on a new converter box. Buyer beware!!!!

If I could give this product no stars, I would. The unit stopped showing the display (channel number etc) within two weeks of purchasing. The remote does not respond well. I have boxed up this product, and repaired the previous brand we had. MUCH better than this piece of junk.

This is a complete waste of money - on the 3rd one, and they only seem to last a couple weeks if that. Widespread problems with this unit I found online, not just me. Save yourself the worry and headache - order a different unit from someone whose not these guys.

This converter box sucks!!!!! I've had it for less then 6 months..... Everytime you would change the volume up or down it would change the channel and then go back to the same volume. It has been cutting off while I'm trying to watch tv for the last 2 months. Now it wont even cut back on! What a Peice Of Sh**!!!!!

Against our better judgement we trusted a helpful salesman instead of researching this unit. We bought two and one of them lasted 36 days before it wouldn't respond to the remote or power off without unplugging it. Since we were 6 days past return window, we had to ship this unit to CA at our expense. They said they'll repair it, not replace it. Really disappointed overall. My hopes are not high for the other unit.

What's not so great: Malfunctioning after ONE WEEK!!!!
I've had this unit SEVEN DAYS (bought new at Best Buy in Lansing, IL 11/26/2011) and already, text no longer displays anywhere onscreen either when selecting a channel or trying to do anything within the menus. The piece of garbage Apex model from Best Buy (which is exactly the same as this KPCI -- even the Apex handset works with this KCPI) was just as big a piece of garbage, but at least it had the decency to wait 2 years before it started to die. I'm never buying another piece of ANYTHING from Best Buy if this is the garbage they insist on selling.

Paid about sixty dollars for this - it lasted approximately four months - although working cannot get menu to work and have lost input channel - reverted to a spare cheap Magnavox, which has less bells and whistles and which is still working since initial intallation at switch over.
DO NOT BUY THIS JUNK - it is not worth losing the money spent, and perhaps put the money towards a new flat screen !!

This rating applies to the two Apex digital converter boxes I purchased in July of 2009; both are now deceased. The only reason I apply this rating is because each box did not last much more than a year before they began blinking, taking longer and longer to come in, then finally dying. Although these boxes were purchased with the government coupon bringing the prices of each to $10 apiece, the most recent, bought today, cost a total of $65. For that price these devices should be expected to last over some time; but lets not forget their made in china. I wonder how long this latest one will last? It's a KCIP instead of an Apex, same type box, same manufacturer. I immediately registered the product to enact the limited 1yrparts/90daylabor warranty. How long do you think it will last?
PS: Best Buy should take responsibility for these expensive yet ephemerally inadequate devices.

5 boxes so far. Not a single box has made it 6months and F'ing best buy now doesn't want to exchange it because I must be scamming them or something because I keep exchanging them! Uh no you sell JUNK! Also it's the only digital converter box you sell!
Stupid remotes break, no buttons on the box, my 4 different universal remotes can't seem to make it work, buzzes on random channels, completely misses channels that it had found before, over heats and smells like melting

Only reason I keep getting it is because it's the only thing to buy!
Honestly I work 12hr shifts 5 days a week and my 2 days off I'm not home because I'm out doing things. Is it too much to ask that I don't spend those 2 days in best buy messing with a stupid converter box? Is it too much to ask that I can lay in bed and watch like an hour of tv before I start the grind again?

Died after less than 3 months - non-existent tech support. As others have stated: need to use remote as there's only a power switch on the box; cheap remote that doesn't work properly; box gets very hot. Will never buy this brand again.

What's not so great: Entire experience was horrible from start to finish!
Nothing about this unit is acceptable. There are no buttons on the box, so must use the remote. That is normally ok, but the remote has a mind of its own, for example, the volume and channel changing actually do the opposite of what was pressed sometimes. In addition, if you are not right in front of the box, the remote will not work. I thought maybe the batteries were weak, but put fresh ones in and same problem. I've had the unit for 5 months and now the unit will turn on but will not display channels at all. To be honest, with how much of a pain this unit is to use, I'm almost happy that it is broken and I can go out and buy a better one, but I will not be going to Best Buy!
