This is the first good Ringo Starr album since 1973's Ringo! What's that? Err, oh -- sorry! It's nothing to do with the Beatles, although between the moniker and song "Beatnik Angel George," you'd expect the Fab Faux, Rain, or Bootleg Beatles. Following up 2008's debut All Y'All, the Atlanta foursome cherrypick classic power pop, garage rock, and rave-ups (the title track apes the Yardbirds' 1965 number six hit "For Your Love," only jumping on an Ian Dury's Blockheads' Mickey Gallagher-like piano train) with a post-punk aftertaste; standouts "Got It," "Make You Mine," and the aforementioned "Beatnik" feel like Supergrass singing Weezer tunes played by That Petrol Emotion. With these "ooohs and ahhs" vocals, harmonies, and a defining sense of elation, we should count our lucky stars it's not the cranky ex-Beatle. ~ Jack Rabid, The Big Takeover

What's great about it: This is the s*****
What's not so great: not one thing. great tunes.
Been listening to this awesome album through the free download at the hype machine. The first listen I couldn't really distinguish the nuanced sound and lyrics, but I gave it a second try because I once saw this band live and their music and intensity knocked me out. Since then I've listened about ten times and each time I luv this more. I don't really know what the influences are, but to me this is moving in a new direction from the stuff I've been listening to. All but a few of the songs have catchy hooks, and though I couldn't pick out all the lyrics yet, there's some poetry in here. I had heard the first song Shadow on line and watched the video - good one, the title song (#5) and #6 are what caught me. Also Make you Mine, Jessica (#8) and Mexican Coma, the last song, is a dark beauty.
I would recommend this to a friend!
