What's great about it: Ease of use, menu layout, battery life, picture quality
What's not so great: Some may find this and other true DSLR's bulky
Having used the Canon T3 to dabble in photography, I was looking for something that was feature laden, easy to pick up and use, and was a camera I could grow with as I become better at understanding compostions, lighting, etc. I feel that the T3i (600d outside the U.S.) is all of those things and more.
I did pretty significant research for a number of weeks and ended up comparing this camera with the Nikon D5100. I finally went this way after one particular review demonstrated the differences in menu layout and ease of use in navigating between settings efficiently, and in time to capture the shots you set out to shoot. I committed to using the manual settings in an effort to better understand photography and to capture what I saw in my minds eye. All of those great shots you see in advertisements, posters, or just great pictures were what I hoped to begin to capture as I progressed (my guess is the majority of those weren't done with the auto settings or a point-and-shoot). Going into the menu of various settings is a single button push (marked Q, just to the right of the flip-out 3" screen). From there, adjustments to aperture, F-stop, Iso, white balance, resolution, etc., are as simple as selecting that setting, then scrolling the wheel located just behind the shutter button on top right of the body. I found that simply adjusting various settings slightly allowed me to capture the right shots. I have taken well over 3000 photos in the last 5 weeks since purchasing the camera, and I'm happy to report I can see improvement from day one til now. Very fun indeed.
The beauty of digital photography is the ability to take hundreds of pictures in order to capture a few great ones. Let that be the reason to try the manual settings and see what this camera is truly capable of.

What's great about it: Price range for type of camera is good, especially for those who are just starting and want to grow into photography.
What's not so great: Features a bit confusing. Need alot of patience to learn.
Love the image stabilizer, because it reduces need for tripod, so it is easy to travel with. Manual easy to read and detailed, good size to carry in photo bag. Though it will take alot of practice and time to learn the numerous features, there are enough features to assist you with almost any type of photo. The macro on the standard lense is not the best, really need to purchase a macro lense to get a good close up. I too found it slow in low lighting, in automatic.

What's great about it: Easy to use, great features, clean, smart, gorgeous!
What's not so great: Price
I love this camera. If you're hesitant because you're worried about photo quality or ease of use for a beginner, please stop! This camera is easy to use and the manual helps a great deal for people who have never used a DSLR before. It also comes in Spanish! Also, the photo quality is gorgeous! I just upgraded from a Rebel XT to this T3i and I have to say, it's like entering a whole new world of color quality and smoothness. Thank you, Canon, for making such a wonderful product! The only bummer is the price. But, I will admit that the image of the number I paid that was burning through my brain has completely vanished because of how fantastic this baby is! I give it 4.5/5. The negative .5 is just because of price. BUT, if you have the money, go for it! This camera will make you smile! :)

What's great about it: Automatic mode is great for everyday photography
What's not so great: Lens is not very good
This is a great camera for people looking for a step above the point and shoot cameras. Set to automatically choose the proper settings almost all photographs will come out as expected.
The problem is when you want to shoot unusual scenes. Like a humingbird drinking from a flower. Most cameras, including this one, will capture the wings as a blur. Although the Canon T3i's body is capable of capturing the wings the lens is NOT. To capture a scene like this you need a "fast" lens with a small F-stop (1.x or maybe 2.x) and the lens that ships will not go that low.
In conclusion, a good / great camera for most photos. But, if you want to take pictures of birds in flight, tree branches blowing in the wind or fast action sports - consider a better lens.

I finally upgraded from my point and shoot camera Lumix ZS7 to this Canon T3i DSLR camera. Wow, this Canon camera is amazing. It takes great pictures. I love the ISO pictures at night. They are super clear and bright. This is the main reason why I switched from my point and shoot camera. I can always count on my new Canon T3i to take beautiful pictures. I'm not a professional but just a photo enthusiast who loves taking great pictures. I took most of my pictures in the AI setting as I'm still used to point and shoot. I will need to try the manual mode to explore other options of taking photos for fun. If you're in a market for a nice new camera, this one is it. Good price too.

What's great about it: Easy to get used to, Price is decent
What's not so great: Short battery life, Pictures could be Better, Can't shoot from far away (Need extra lens)
This is my first DSLR and I'd recommend it for anyone's first. I've only had it for 1 week and I'm pretty used to the buttons, how to focus the lens, etc.
The price wasn't bad for a DSLR but it could have a Tiny bit better picture quality. When you zoom in close to the photograph it still has a bit of graininess. I can't wait to upgrade to the Canon 7D! The quality is much more clear.
The only other thing that I don't like about this camera is the battery life is very short. I am buying a second battery to carry around in my bag. It would be bad if you were at a shoot or event and ran out of battery...
My overall review is that I would recommend this to a beginner!

What's great about it: Everything except what I stated in the 'not so great' section
What's not so great: Slightly noisy at 6400 ISO
I bought this camera back in August of 2011, so I've been using it for 8 months. I wanted to wait long enough that I'd had proper time to learn and use the camera before writing a hasty review.
Prior to buying this camera, I'd only used simple Canon point-and-shoots. I knew I was ready for a DSLR, but I couldn't decide between this camera and the comparable Nikon product. After reading what felt like hundreds of reviews, comparing photo quality from both cameras, and trying them out at the store, I chose the Canon. Main reasons being, I was familiar with Canon and I liked the way it fit in my hands better than the Nikon. Truthfully, I find them both to be amazing products and I think you'll be happy either way you choose.
The first thing I did was buy the Canon T3i For Dummies book and read it cover to cover. I can't tell you how helpful that book has been in udnerstanding just what this camera is capable of. Your camera comes with a manual, but it's not nearly as user friendly and informational as the book.
At the beginning, I shot solely in the automatic modes - Auto, Landscape, Portrait, etc. These settings produced beautiful photos, but I knew the camera could do so much better if I learned to use it to it's full capabilities. I branched out and started trying the settings with more creative control and worked myself up to shooting, almost always, in manual. The pictures that you can take in Manual, even just using the kit lens that comes with the body, are amazing! The colors are bright, the focus is sharp, and the artistic control you have over your photos is well worth the money you'll spend on this camera.
I've recently ordered the Canon 55-250 telephoto zoom lens and the Canon 50mm 1.8/f prime lens and I'm looking forward to learning to use those lenses in conjunction with the camera.
My advice: Take everything slow. Be slow to make a decision on the camera you want. And be patient as you're learning to use it. I don't see myself purchasing another camera for a LONG time.

What's great about it: Easiness
What's not so great: nothing
I love this camera. I bought it to take pictures of my new born son. I love this camera because I spent the time to learn how to use all the adjustments for photos, but my husband can take pictures and just point and shoot. Everytime I show people photos that I have taken they think they are so great. But, really the picture quality is what makes everything amazing. I tell everyone how much I love this camera.
