What's great about it: picture quality

I LOVED this camera at first. I learned the features and it took great pictures. I handled it carefully and while on vacation, I went to take it out to take pictures of my kids, and the screen was just black. It showed that I was taking pictures BUT after asking several professionals to look at it, all the settings were set correctly. I never dropped it. It JUST STOPPED WORKING!!! The shutter stopped opening, resulting in BLACK shots. I did research and found out MANY others were having the same issue with this same exact model. Shutter stopped working and camera was just broken. I was w/out a camera for a few months. It was still under mfg warranty since I hadn't even had it for one year. The store called me to pick it up, SUPPOSEDLY fixing it for free. I brought the form in to get it, and THEY NEVER INFORMED me they were NOT able to fix it. So they never shipped my camera back to the store. They were willing to replace w/ a new one BUT if I wanted to get an entirely different camera, they would only give me the value of the sale price, not what I paid for it...$150 LESS than what I paid!!! Completely UPSET. Customer Service absolutely poor and I'm def switching to Canon!!! Too expensive to get a junk camera.

What's great about it: Fantastic camera- picture quality, flow of menu, etc.
What's not so great: Ease of use takes time- but that's because of the wide variety of options!
I was on the fence between Canon and Nikon for years. Canon is great for motion, Nikon for color. They are both top notch cameras. Don't get me wrong, these two are superior brands with comparable stats. I like Nikons menu flow. The camera itself fits better in my hands. If you buy something this pricey, you MUST play with the menu and check the fit.
Nikkor lenses are easy to use/change. VR and A/M options.

What's great about it: Vivid pictures
This is my first dslr camera and I have to say I LOVE IT! The pictures and crisp and clear.....many features which I am looking forward to learning :)

What's great about it: Ease of use.
I absolutely love this camera. I use it mainly to take pictures of my children while they play baseball, volleyball and other sports. It's also fabulous at taking inside/family pictures.
I purchased a 200 zoom lens to go with it and I am perfectly pleased.

What's great about it: Picture quality and ease of use with lots of features
What's not so great: the standard lens is good for basic shooting, but you should invest in something bigger for any kind of distance.
I love this camera! My friend and I started a small photography business and I needed a camera that was easy for me to use, but still had all of the great features and abilities of a much larger, more expensive camera. I don't claim to be a professional by any means, but I have taken some spectacular shots with this camera and I would definitely suggest this to someone who loves photography.

What's great about it: Quality of pictues and videos
What's not so great: so many features, takes a little time to learn them all
My brother, a Personal Chef, owns a Nikon 3100 and I love the pictures that he has taken at events, as well of his dishes. I recently puchased the NIkon DLSR 5100 upon my departure from Afghanistan and before I went to St. Lucia. I was worried about the abundance of features, and I might not get good pictures. However, going through the quick set up guide that was included, I was able to get postcards photos and videos immediately, just with the setting on auto. There was not one day that I did not leave my resort room without my camera. I love the quality of the pictures, as well as the playback options when you review pictures. This camera is well worth the investment! I am looking forward to getting home and exploring the rest of the features.

What's not so great: The built-in flash is too weak
The weak built-in flash often fails to compensate light of the target when stronger light is from the target's background. Of course, it can be compensated with total manual. Other than this weakness, the camera is great.

What's great about it: Great pictures
This camera is great! After many hours of research i decided to get this one. The lens kit is the best out there for a entry camera. It is very easy to use. The camera comes with a video which tells you everything you need to know for start. After taking my first set of pictures i was able to learn how to adjust settings very easily. The picture quality is great. Very little noise and abbreviation. You just can not get great pictures with a regular point and shot camera. I highly recommend this camera to everybody who wants a entry level DSLR.

This camera is outstanding! My first DSLR and I am very happy with my purchase. I find myself taking my camera everywhere so that I can take the amazing pictures this item produces. I was hesitant at first at buying this type of camera since I've never used one before because I was used to the easy snap and shoot. As soon as I brought it home I utilized the DVDs that came with it and learned the basics, I took some practice shots and I was amazed on how easy it was to grasp. I highly recommend this camera!

What's great about it: Ok, when it worked
What's not so great: It broke
After 9 months of light hobby use the camera started displaying an error message. I took it into a Nikon authorized repair shop and they said this is happening to a lot of D5100 cameras and that I needed to send it to the factory to be adjusted. After sending it into the factory they said it was because of "Impact Damage", and I would have to pay for the repair. This is my first DSL, so I have been very careful with it. I have never dropped it. Nikon customer support has been difficult to deal with. They have obviously tried to computerize the process and even talking to a real person is like talking to a computer. When talking to the Nikon customer support you can tell they are reading a script, which always ended with redirecting you to their support website. The links provided were generic pages that usually asked you to type in a question to find your own answer. I am very frustrated with this camera and the support I received from Nikon.

I bought this camera prior to a cruise my wife and I recently took. I couldn't be any happier to have it with us. Photo after photo turned out wonderful and will allow our memories to relive the cruise and islands we visited. I highly recommend the Nikon D5100 to anyone considering this purchase.

This is literally the perfect camera! The pictures are so clear, with so much detail, and same with the video. There are many manual options for the user to experiment with, and you can edit your pictures right on your camera which is very cool.

I bought this before a vacation. It's my first D-SLR. I owned a 35mm film D-SLR, but only ever had point-and-shoot digital cameras. I am thrilled with this camera. It does pretty well with the many "auto" features, and easily allows you to manipulate all aspects of your shot. The live view slider is a great capability and makes the functionality superior to Canon's T3i in my opinion. I also love the versatility of the swivel LCD screen. Perfect for getting shots up high and down low without contorting yourself as much.
Is it the best camera on the market? Certainly not. But with 16.2 megapixels, great auto-features, HD video, Nikon lens versatility, not much bulk and durability, it's a great entry-level D-SLR. I'm one satisfied customer!
