What's great about it: Appearance is sleek and low key, good user controls
What's not so great: Poor sound quality
The amplifier has so much distortion in the high end it is difficult to bear. Not likely to be an issue if you are only watching movies, but detracts from listening to music. My older Samsung HTIB is much better, so I know it doesn't need to be this poor for this price range.

What's great about it: Great surround system that comes under budget
What's not so great: Haven't found yet....
Bought this system last week and I must say that Sony has nailed this product with simplicity and perfection. This is the best deal you can get with the price you pay and sound you get. Very easy to setup, works fine with my Panasonic plasma, speaker wires are long enough to put it almost anywhere in my living room, and sound is phenomenal... The best feature I liked was Ipod dock - you can control your Ipod/Iphone music player from the system remote. Your TV remote would also control volume for the system so that you dont have to use two remote simultaneously. Another good feature is that it would give great sound for your TV by just connecting it with HDMI cable.

What's great about it: The simplicity of the set up and calibration of the system
What's not so great: Should have had the mounting screws for the back speakers just to complete the process of setting up your home theater s
Still sound good and doesn't hit the wallet so hard. I am really satisfied with the sound quality of the Sony Home Theater system. Just spent two days trying to find a home theater system that worked. Took two RCA systems back two two Walmarts and then decided to switch to a Sony product and glad I did.

What's great about it: The sound quality
What's not so great: There's no blu-ray player!
I bought a 55" 3D Sony LED T.V. and got this free with purchase. The only thing I didn't like about it is that it's just a receiver and not a 3D blu-ray player. I was told by an employee of Best Buy that it had a blu-ray player with it and it didn't!

What's great about it: Good price and sound quality.
What's not so great: Syncing problems with Cable only
This Sony sound system was pretty much what I was looking for. The sound quality is good - best I've heard in it's price range. I'm very happy with it.
Pros: Ease of setting up, sound quality, automatically mutes TV sound when you turn on receiver, Toshiba TV remote and Sony sounds system remote automatically interchangeable without any programming.
Cons: Many times, does not sync sound with cable TV. I haven't broken out the book to see if this is fixable, but I only use it for movies or hooking up my PC to the tv and that sound syncs just fine. It's only cable sound I have problems with. Also, no Equalizer, just pre-set sound types to choose from (sports, news, movies, etc).

What's great about it: Graet for the money.
What's not so great: Short speaker wire.
This is a great sound system for the price. The bass woofer really pounds! The only issue I found during setup is the short speaker wire for the average size room. I was able to splice in what I needed. I recomend soldering the ends together and covering the connections with heat shrink wrapping if your going to do this.

What's great about it: just about everything
What's not so great: short wires but no big deal for me
i bought this for the multiple hdmi inputs because my monitor only has one. they all work perfectly with my droid 3, laptop, and ps3. occasionally it had an issue with my computer, but all i have to do is restart the recever.
small size too, its just a bit bigger than my 17 inch laptop
next, the sound is waaaay better than i expected. there are settings in the amp menu to increase the volume of each speaker to how you want. people that say the isnt much bass must not know about the settings, because there is plenty, sometimes too much. high mid and low notes sounds fantastic. im 17 and listen to mostly hiphop, rock, metal, and dubstep. all of it sounds fantastic, honestly better than my buddy's bose lifestyle 30, and a sliver the price.
i bought it on sale for a fantastic $250, but the normal price of $350 or so is also extremely reasonable. for what you get, and the quality, i think it should be at least $450.
even though the speaker wires might be short for some people, and me, it was easy to cut and extend them. if you would like to know it uses 20 gauge wires.
the speakers are easy to hang on a wall. all you have to do is put like a drywall screw in the wall and the back of the speakers have an indent in them. i wish they also had mounts to articulate them, but for $250 im not complaining.
overall, excellent system, i tell everyone about it

What's great about it: easy setup, easy to use, works great with sony tvs, great sound quality, good design
What's not so great: Sub woofer wire is a little short
Great product. Sound was great for my small living room. Super easy to setup up. Sleek and very good design. The only thing that bother me was the wires were a little short for my living room. I have a very small living room where my TV is located. The wires for the sub woofers extend to about 6 ft which barely fits my setup for my living room. The wire is so extended out that my niece tripped over it so I removed the sub woofer all together. The rest of the speakers have adequate wire distance. And again I have a small living room so the setup of for my system is a bit off. The base and the sound are great though!

What's great about it: Great surround sound for the price!!! *Outputs surround sound from my iMac and Mac Book Pro
What's not so great: Not very many Sound Field presets
I bought this system about week ago because I wanted to be able to get surround sound from my iMac and MacBook Pro for film/sound editing and watching films.
Setup was fast and simple. This system comes with an iPod/iPhone dock which is really nice. Makes it easy to play music from my iPod and iPhone and another charger is always nice.
I played a scene from the film Super 8 and was immediately impressed with the sound quality! Clear and crisp, and the different Movie Mode selections bring the exciting and powerful sound of movie theaters into your home!
For me, this Surround Sound System is perfect! I have a 27" iMac desktop and a 15" MacBook Pro and this systems works great on both. I use it for watching films and film/sound editing in Avid Media Composer.
Being a college kid, I'm kind of on a low budget, so for about $270 (with tax), you can't get much better surround sound than this!
***********************************
OUTPUT SURROUND SOUND FROM YOUR MAC: (*Check first to see if your Mac is capable of outputting surround sound. Most models before early 2009 are not able to output multi-channel audio)
- Use a Mini Display Port to HDMI cable and connect the HDMI into the Blu-Ray/DVD HDMI input on the receiver and the Mini Display to the Mini Display Port on your Mac.
- Go to System Preferences on your Mac. Click on the "Sound" icon. Then in the "Output" tab, select SONYAVAMP - HDMI
- Then go into Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup. On the left side of the window select HDMI. On the right side it then should say "Source: SONY AVAMP"
- Click the "Configure Speakers..." button in the bottom right of the window. Click the "Multichannel" tab. Then select "5.1 Surround" from the pull down menu. Click on each speaker to provide a test tone to make sure each is connect properly. Then click on "Apply"
- Last set is to go into the DVD Player. Go to "Preferences" and click on the "Disc Setup" tab. Under Audio at the bottom of the window select "Digital Out - SONY AVAMP" from the drop down menu for "Audio output"
*You now have 5.1 Channel Surround Sound from you Mac!
***********************************
Over all the Sony 1000W 5.1-Ch. Home Theater System is amazing for the price! It has great sound quality and is fast and easy to hook up to your devices!
PROS:
- Easy and fast setup
- 3 HDMI Inputs
- Sound quality is excellent for the price! Crisp and clear
- Auto Calibration
- Sleek design
- Inexpensive
- iPod/iPhone Dock
- I love how it works perfectly with my iMac and MacBook Pro!
- Works great with Avid Media Composer NLE system
CONS:
- would be nice if the wires were a bit longer, or at least able to be extended easily :/
- Not very many Sound Field presets (12)
This product has... Easy to use controls, Good connection options, great sound quality, ipod/iphone dock

I bought this system a week ago and I absolutely love it. Very simple plug and play setup. The digital calibration is an awesome feature to have, another good thing about the system is that you don't have to fuss with any wire hook ups on the speakers or the system, it's already pre-wired for you. I really like having the iPod dock as well, another charging system for the iPhone is never a bad thing. I would highly recommend this system to anyone who wants to hear great audio without spending a fortune.

My wife often likes to surprise me with gifts that replace malfunctioning or outdated equipment in my entertainment setups. This time, she bought me an entertainment system to replace an Onkyo TX-SR-606 receiver in which the HDMI functionality had stopped working. I have been using optical audio cables to my receiver and HDMI direct to my tv to switch between my components, so it was cumbersome for anyone not well-practiced in audio/video setups to operate.
I was also using a Harman-Kardon TS-2 subwoofer with two Kenwood front floor speakers with full wooden cabinet surround and center speakers, so the sound quality was an immediate downgrade. The inability to upgrade any of this system's speakers prevented me from using my speakers or subwoofer, so I returned it in favor of a receiver that could. But this isn't a system for audiophiles, and makes a decent starter system for those who have trouble with involved electronic setups. The Sony speakers were quite clear and had an easy, color-coded setup of direct plug-ins with a passive (non-powered, simple plug-in# subwoofer and three HDMI inputs. The system has auto speaker calibration and comes complete with a dock for iPod or iPhone and is capable of passing through a 3D signal. The remote is simple to master, switches functions for video and audio each with a single, easily marked button, and will operate any Sony products #tv, blu-ray, PS3# without the need to program it.
Since the price is low for an entire 5.1 surround system, I would recommend it to anyone with a PS3 looking to upgrade their sound with a surround system on a budget below $300. It functions in all sound and video formats that the PS3 offers, including 3D, only costs $40-$50 more than many of the speaker systems marketed for video games, and has loads more uses and better sound quality than many that are even slightly more expensive. And it literally goes from the box to fully functioning in 10-15 minutes for even the least tech savvy. Again, it isn't upgradable, so if this system is attractive but deeper bass is important to you, Sony offers a system with similar features and a powered subwoofer #and an integrated DVD player) for around $300.
This product has... Easy to use controls, zero upgradability
About me... Audiophile, life-long techie, value-conscious
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

It´s a very good home theater for the money, but it´s no excellent. If I could take the choice again y would spend more money into something better.
Pros
- Easy to set up and configure
-lots of HDMI sound input ports which is important because HDMI audio is better than optical
-lots of features
Cons
- The main issue that I have with this home theater is that the sub woofer it´s no strong enough and for me that’s very important
-the other thing that bothers me is that the cables that come with the speakers are short and are attached to the back of the speaker which would make really hard to exchange for longer ones

Just picked up this unit while it was on sale this week. setup was a breeze, easily hooks up to all my devices via hdmi. What's great about it: HDMI connections
What's not so great: Really short speaker wires--SONY needs to make the effort to put longer speaker wires on this--wire isn't that expensive
I bought this because of the amount of additional HDMI connections. It is good quality and one of the only home theater systems with these connectors. I wish it had a few more of the old AV type connectors, but it works fine for what we need.

What's not so great: too many buttons on remote that cannot use without sony tv
first of all this is not a dvd player or blueray player, THIS IS A SURROUND SOUND SYSTEM. PEOPLE GET THIS CONFUSED with a different model, i love this sound system, i like the preset equilizer, and is easy to use, the remote has too many buttons, that you can use if you are going to connect with a sony tv, i dont have a sony tv so i only use the ones to change the sound settings on the system. i like how clear it sounds and the different sound modes it has. its worth it for all the inputs and sound quality.
