What's great about it: Lots of features for a Personal Location Finder
What's not so great: It is true that the Battery Compartment could use some work.
I own a number of GPS units, from one for the car to those for outdoor activities such as biking, hiking, geocaching, and so forth. Having said that, I do know a little about how a GPS works and the relative strengths and weaknesses of the different types. To focus on the Bushnell BackTrack Point-5, let me begin by saying that it has exceeded my expectations. Its primary purpose is to get you back to point A after you go from it to point B. Understand that this unit only allows you to mark spots where you are standing (i.e. point A - such as your home, where you park your car, your starting point of a hike, your campsite, etc.) You can only enter the location where you are presently standing, not a place where you would like to go. It provides no turn-by-turn directions, and in fact, does not even have any sort of map screen. What it does it simple. It lets you mark a spot where you are standing and then later, it will direct you back to that spot. You can store up to 5 locations in the GPS unit. When you want to return to any one of those 5 locations, you simply select the icon for that location and an arrow points the way. Note that the unit does not keep a trail of "bread crumbs" but merely points to your origination spot, straight as the crow flies. Of course, you could use the five storage locations as 5 waypoints if you wish but that is not their purpose.
Now that you understand the limitations and purpose of the GPS unit, let me comment on performance. I am accustomed to turning off a GPS and then when I turn it back on later, it taking two minutes or more to ready itself for use. Thus far, the Bushnell has recovered from a cold start in only seconds, even when moved several miles while powered off. It is the fastest startup I have seen. I realize it will not always be able to initialize so quickly, but it does it frequently enough to be quite impressive. I am inside of my home at this moment and just turned it on and in less than 5 seconds, it was ready to navigate. That is incredible to me. Another thing I like is that when I stop walking, the compass or directional arrow does not swing wildly. It just stops, pointing in the correct direction. Very nice.
Reasons I would recomend this over the comptition is that: 1) It allows you to store 5 locations while all others I have seen permit only 3. 2) It provides the longitude and latitude coordinates on the screen if you wish to share them with someone else or write them down for reference or to place in another GPS. 3) It tells altitude and temperature 4) It has an electronic compass. 5) It uses disposable AAA batteries. I do not want to be stuck with a rechargable GPS and it need a charge when I need it. I prefer batteries and will bring along a couple extras. The other personal location GPS units that I researched did not have many or any of these added features.
If you are in the market for a Personal Location Finder, I would highly recommend this unit. Remember, it is not for your car trips or geocaching, but only a tool to help you find your way back to any one of five points that you have marked in the unit. Very handy to keep in your pocket or purse. Five Stars!

What's great about it: Stupid simple
What's not so great: Battery door
I bought this not expecting much but to get back from point A to point B. Does exactly what it says. Very simple, not much to it. If you're looking for bells and whistles, this isn't it. This is so basic my 5 year old can use it. No maps, just a directional arrow.
The battery door could use some work but as long as you aren't prying on it. Got satellite signal within a minute or so and stayed locked without problems. Overall grade B+
