What's great about it: Outstanding video quality
What's not so great: High cost, Zoom control
Purchased this unit for filming nighttime marching-band competitions. Good low light sensitivity and high dynamic range provides greater detail (in both light and dark areas) than most other models. The wide angle lens provides a large field of view with minimal distortion. Manual focus, aperture and shutter speed are useful in certain conditions. The powered image stabilizer setting provides impressively steady footage when zoomed in on a distant subject - almost like using a tripod. Battery life is good. High resolution 3.5" display is outstanding, but touch screen control is somewhat difficult to use . Manual audio level control is great for capturing the full dynamic range of a concert without all of the compression caused by the automatic level setting. Built in mic is OK, but as with all camcorders a high quality external microphone will provide much better fidelity. Controls are a little complicated - but fine for such a sophisticated unit. Zoom control switch is difficult to modulate - which is unfortunate because the zoom speed is graduated in 16 steps which would give great control if the switch was of a higher quality. Due to the low resolution of the CMOS sensor (2 mp), this camcorder is not a good choice for still pictures.
The quality of video shot has more detail and a better overall look than any other unit I have worked with, including the previous generation semi-professional HDV models. For users that need a wide angle field of view, the picture quality is dramatically better than using a wide angle add-on lens required by most other camcorders. The HF G10 is a good choice for a serious videographer where video quality is your highest priority and cost is less of a consideration. It is not a wise choice for the casual user.

What's great about it: Features, controls and HD quality video
What's not so great: Pricey
I was looking for a camcorder that shot HD video, used flash memory and had enough manual and custom features to create high quality video. The Canon HF G10 has been a great purchase.
It is larger than the pocket sized camcorders that represent most of the consumer level market. I have large hands and it feels comforable to hold and position.
Feature wise it has 2 SD expansion slots, so along with the 32GB built in storage you can add a significant amount of run time. You can set the camcorder to failover to the secondary storage automatically, or you can create simultaneous duplicate recordings. The lens is sharp and onboard microphones are decent, but you will get better audio by using a separate directional mic.
I am still learning the best ways to take advantage of all the features and controls, but the camcorder is a solid performer.

Pros: It has professional features that i require making short films. Love the stable movements and vivid pictures. easy to transfer to and from PC.
Cons: photos are not as clear. camera needs more accessories such as filters and lenses.
Overall: If you are into amateur film making or intro level videographer, i would recommend this. Only few hundred more if u can upgrade to a XH1.

What's great about it: Native 24p, great picture quality, nice zoom and image stabilization not typically found in DSLR video.
What's not so great: Limited to a rather large depth of field so does not provide a match to 35mm film cinematics.
This is a camcorder that really shines in the hands of videographers who like to manually control all aspects of video recording to their liking.
If you know what to go after to get good results in regards to aperture, exposure using zebras, focusing using color peaking, the quality matches DSLR video with the exception of not having the shallow depth of field that a large sensor provides.
I also shoot with a Canon T3i and I used to own a Panasonic HVX200. Aside from the superior format of DVCPro HD that the HVX uses, I would choose the HF G10 over the HVX200. The image quality in the HF G10 isbetter in regards to resolution and noise but the HVX has superior color depth because of format and 3 chips. Bottom line is I like what I see out of the HF G10 better in all but the best lighting situations where the HVX200 really shines. In comparison with the Canon T3i, I give the T3i an edge for having better image customization with custom picture styles and having shallow depth of field from the large sensor but truly the HF G10 has an edge with other things like zooming and great focus and image stabilazation systems that make shooting good video an easier task. For shooting anything with a large depth of field where you want backgrounds in focus, this camcorder is fantastic. Also the Canon DSLRs have a bit of a drawback when it comes to moire and artifacting in the video when shooting intricate patterns and brick buildings. The HF G10 is superior in that you don't have the moire issue popping up like you do in some DSLRs.
You can get a shallow depth of field look by using the telemacro concept and zooming all the way in while opening up the aperture fully. This works pretty well but limits you to shooting everythinig at full telephoto on the zoom.

What's great about it: Low light, stablization and lots of manual settings
What's not so great: menu
Lots of manual settings to play with. Excellent stablization. Low light performance is outstanding. I am pleased to own this Camcorder. The menu is a little awkward trying to get used to.
