What's great about it: Huge ink supply at low price. No electronics built into cartridges, so refill is easy. 11" x 17" scans and paper
What's not so great: Must manually tell printer about paper size. Platic shell doesn't have that "high-end" appearance.
I selected the low-end model of Brother's professional all-in-one series.
This is a product that is marketed by an engineering company, not a hyper-marketing company. As such, it is replete with useful features, but it takes work to find and exploit them.
Windows XP Pro 64-bit and Windows 7 64-bit network installations were easy. Ubuntu Linux 11.10 network installation was not so obvious to accomplish but was successful as well. Go to Brother's Web site for the latest software rather than use the supplied CD.
To my astonishment, the built-in fax works over my VOIP 'phone connection. In fact, I faxed product warranty registration to Brother.
The mechanical design is not so pretty, but it is very well thought out. Built-in inker cap storage and data cable routing / strain relief is a nice touch.
The four-ink system is just fine for my needs. Competition offers a five-ink system that perhaps produces nicer photo prints, but that is not my intended use for a printer.
There is a fold-out, straight-through paper-path tray that permits feeding one sheet of heavy paper at a time.
The supplied paper tray is very flexible.
The scanner is not so good at automatically sizing the work. I must fiddle a bit in order not to lose content near the page margin.
Tip: Though this printer offers wireless capability, try instead to wire it into your network. Performance will be better and not subject to signal interference or fading. Let your wireless router expose the printer to wired and wireless client users.
I would buy this machine again in a heartbeat. The opportunity to get it on a temporary price break at Best Buy and to pick it up at the Best Buy store rather than pay for shipping sealed the deal! You'll also buy it once you consider the cost of ink for it.
I would recommend this to a friend!
