A month ago my old 63" DLP light engine crashed. After getting some estimates on repairing the old set, I decided to look at some of the new stuff on the market. After researching the new LCD, LED sets I came across this Samsung Plasma. I have never owned a plasma before. I was a little apprehensive about purchasing one. The LCD and LED pictures I have seen were really stunning. Bright, crystal clear and amazing colors. But something just didn't feel right about what I was seeing.To me the pictures did not look natural. All had the 3D feature, which did not interest me at all when making my purchasing decision.
I have had my Samsung 64" Plasma now for one week. I have not had much sleep. Late at night when I have the set to myself, I turn off all the lights and watch in awe! I swear it is like I'm looking out a window and watching everything happen right before me in real time. The picture is so clear, so natural its almost 3D. SIMPLY FANTASTIC! The colors are amazing, the blacks are stunning. The clarity is unbelievable. The sound is simply awesome when run through your home theater audio system. My old set did not have 5.1 surround for TV broadcast. SIMPLY FANTASTIC! It is the best picture I have ever seen on a TV set. Blu-Ray will blow you away! Hands down! LED and LCD are great, but they are not a plasma.
I have tried everything the TV offers and everything works great.
The ability to browse the web on this TV is SIMPLY FANTASTIC. It allows for a whole new level of in home entertainment.
The only thing I can honestly say that could use some improvement are the keys used for navigating the web. It takes some getting used to. But it works.
Then we tried the 3D. Like I said earlier it was not even a factor when considering whether or not to buy the TV. As it turns out, the Blu-Ray 3D is stunning.SIMPLY FANTASTIC! What an incredible in home entertainment experience. I did not think the picture could get get any better. The clarity of picture combined with the 3D effects are something to see. Stunning! It is every bit as good as the 3D picture you see on the big screen at the theater but in the comfort of your home. The blue tooth glasses work just fine. Just be sure to eliminate any light source from behind you while viewing.
The picture is equally stunning in daylight as it is at night. The TV with its thin barely there bezel is a stunning piece of furniture in its own right.
Through the years I have purchased very few things that live up to the hype. And even fewer that have met, let alone, exceeded my expectations. This TV has exceeded any and all of my expectations. If your looking for a new TV and you want the best picture, I can honestly recommend this TV to you. I can not imagine how technology in the foreseeable future can improve enough to produce better picture quality than this. It is SIMPLY FANTASTIC!

Nice TV, I did my homework and research. I knew more about the tv than the sales guy The picture is excellent and it was easy to set up and calibrate it myself. HDMI cables can be purchased for much less than the store offers at AMAZON. You don't need $100.00 gold plated super duper monster cables for any HD TV. Thanks to CNET for providing all the technical help I needed without the sales BS.

I upgraded to this tv from a 61" Samsung DLP which has been a good tv but wanted the 3D and the great picture of a plasma after 4-5 months of research I knew this was the tv I wanted Cnet rated it the best tv of 2011 and that was what put it in my list I eliminated LED tvs because of the white wash look the picture has just look at one next to a plasma also the contrast ratio can't come close to a plasma and with the newer ones there is no chance of burn in like the old plasma from 01-05 anyway the only issues I have with this tv is there is no easy way to install base plate with out placing tv on edge or on the screen and the Netflix app has never worked also had small dent in corner of bessel but can't see it unless light hits it just right so didn't want to go through the hassle of a return 3D is amazing and picture quality is as good as money can buy

This is my first plasma TV. For the last 5 years or so I have been watching a 52" Samsung LCD that has been professionally ISF calibrated. I thought my trusty LCD had a great picture......... until I turned this TV on. It blew my LCD away right out of the box. Can't wait to get it calibrated. The picture is very bright and the colors are vibrant. The only complaints I have about the TV is that there is a slight buzzing sound. You only hear it if there is no audio and you are sitting directly in front of the TV but it is annoying. A Geek Squad tech is coming out next week to take a look at the TV. Hopefully it is something that they can fix. My other complaint is that the web browser doesn't work very well. The remote is clunky to use. If you could pair a BT keyboard to the TV I'm sure it would work a lot better but alas you can't.

Pro: Best thing about this TV is the vast amount of adjustments you can make. This set is the most color accurate TV out there.
Everything just seems as if you're looking through a window rather than watching something on a surface. Black levels are also really good although not the best, but still truly exceptional. Besides picture, the set itself looks awesome. the bezel is fantastic.

Cons. Not, really a con, but I chose to deactivate all the HDMI controls since i use a universal remote. since the option was there to turn it off, i didn't knock a star off. another con is the lag when you're playing video games. There is a Game Mode, but it gets really tedious to switch is on and off all the time.
Conclusion: After almost 6 months of research, I narrowed it down to the VT30 and this. VT30 has better blacks, but not that much and this TV has THE BEST COLOR ACCURACY OUT THERE! Better than Kuro and the Elite... i think that brought the PN64D8000 over the VT30.

Before I purchased this TV, I was leery about getting a plasma set, since I used to sell them back in the days of bad burn in etc. I've always said I would "NEVER" own a plasma TV. Boy, was I wrong, and I couldn't be happier! This set is everything a TV/movie/video game enthusiast could ever need, want, or ask for. It is EXTREMELY customizable. If you don't have the picture you want with one of the main settings, you have the option to fine tune it to a degree that may require professional equipment. For someone who works with video every day, like I do, this is a very good thing. Anyone who worries about brightness because they saw it in a store next to an LED, the picture on this blows LED out of the water and it's not even a fair fight. The 25 million to 1 contrast ration allows you to see a range and depth of shadows that I've never seen before. The set may need to have the firmware updated (which can be done via USB with instructions from AVSforums) to "optimize" the black levels, but that takes less than 10 minutes.
Upon setting the TV up, I went to move a picture behind the TV, and nearly lost my balance while watching a basketball game where the camera panned. It is literally like looking out a window. Even during bright sunlight, the picture is amazing, and at night....well, you have to see it to believe it. The 3-D is nothing short of spectacular either. I really can't say enough about the picture quality. If you're using HDMI cables and HD sources (cable box, PS3, etc), the result is stunning.
The internet apps are also a cool feature too, but probably not something I will use a lot. I will say that the wi-fi set up is a breeze and the internet seems to be fast once everything is installed and activated. Pretty impressive for a TV.
A little about the design, the pictures here show a silver edge, but the actual TV is more of a titanium type color and not nearly as reflective as the images make it look. The stand is a shiny silver as pictured, and all-in-all it looks great.
Overall, for the size and picture quality with this set, it's about as close to a "can't miss" purchase that I've seen. If you're a picture snob, like I am, you have to have this TV.

First off,let me say this :this tv is fantastic. you know this already,you've read the expert reviews,probably checked it out in stores so im not gonna comment anymore about the actual set. rather, im going to share my purchase experience. well,i went to the magnolia best buy in tacoma wa. to purchase this set,i waited a good hour before finally being helped(yes,i did ask for them to send me a sales associate,i didnt just stand around) the employee i finally got was very nice and helpful,knowledgeable and overall nice guy. finally get the set home,first thing i notice is no packing straps on the box,also there was only two out of four "locks" on the box. i was so excited to get this tv i didnt think anything about it. got the tv plugged in and turned on. it didnt go through the first time setup that new tvs do,just turned straight on,with........custom settings applied. it was in movie mode,i knew the tv defaults to standard the first time you turn it on,i was angry. i go into the smart hub and notice a bunch of apps already downloaded,checked em out and not to my surprise a few,including the pandora app had been registered to someone with an AOL email address. i was infuriated,best buy just sold me a returned set for full price! i brought it back and demanded an exchange,which they were dragging on,claiming they were having trouble finding one in stock,i pointed out one right away to them,new in box fully strapped with all 4 locks. they played dumb like they hadnt known it was there. they really didnt want me to take this tv for some reason,on the way out they stopped me one more time and tried the whole"hey how bout we make you a deal on the set you brought back" i didnt even want to hear their offer,i said "no thanks" and walked right out. the guy who sold the original set too me had no idea as he wasnt the one who pulled it for me so he was very apologetic. only because of him will i continue to shop there,but best buy almost lost my business. they certainly have lost the business of most of my family and friends after hearing about this. anyway,in the end its a great tv!

What's great about it: True blacks, crisp picture quality, amazing color, upconverts 2-D movies with compatible 3-D Blu-Ray player.
What's not so great: The remote control is unwieldy (use the Blu-Ray player remote instead), and like all plasmas, it runs warm.
We bought the Samsung PN64D8000F late last March after doing a lot of research for a new television. We scoured Amazon for user reviews on Panasonic plasmas and Samsung LEDs, we checked CNET for info on the latest CES front-runners, we talked to store clerks at our local Best Buy/Magnolia hybrid here in Issaquah, and surprisingly we settled on Samsung over Panasonic but it was a tough choice. I read that Panasonic had not updated its True-Black technology for a number of years, while Samsung was still improving upon its own technology. Even CNET mentioned this in one of their reviews. However, both brands have a ton of amazing customer feedback; Panasonic got rave reviews at CES for its plasma showings, but so did the new generation of Samsungs.
Sadly, when we finally settled on the TV we wanted, the earthquake in Japan held up production of the new lines as the unfortunate people of Japan recovered from their disaster.
I kept checking back with our local dealer, and when they said that they just received the Samsung PN64D8000F, pointed it out on the showroom floor, and told us they had one available, we bought it immediately.
It came with a 3-D Glasses bundle, with a full set of Shrek movies in 3-D. Upon having it delivered, we eagerly assembled the base and connected it to a Samsung BD-D6700 3-D Blu-Ray player (with an Audioquest 'Chocolate' HDMI cable#, an ethernet cable for internet content, and our sound system.
The automatic detection and playability of the 3-D compatible Blu-Ray player made it all that much easier for us to crank this thing up and start playing with the features.
The first thing I did was pop in a DVD version of "Fifth Element" to see what the upconversion from 2-D to 3-D would look like, and the first words out of my mouth were, "OH, MY GOD!" It was amazing! It almost seemed like the movie was intended for 3-D!!! I made a mental note to myself that I would pick up a Blu-Ray version of "Fifth Element" to make the experience even more amazing #picked it up the next day and it IS even more amazing#.
We set it up in our finished basement-turned-entertainment room, so the windows and sliding glass doors let in a lot of daylight. We waited until night to see just how crisp the picture contrast was, and to check just how deep the blacks were. We were not disappointed. The picture was even more amazing, because with all the lights out, the picture seemed to float above the floor in our pitch black room. No washed out blacks or dark greys. Everything looked crisp, sharp, and flawless.
Almost a year later, when we pop in a new release Blu-Ray that we just picked up, we are still taken back by the picture quality. It's one of the best TV choices we've made. After "hmm'ing" and "haw'ing" about going plasma over LED, the picture quality, picture contrast, the true blacks, and refresh rates of the Samsung PN64D8000F have made us plasma converts.

Replacing a 52" lcd this plasma is the best. The refresh rate is incredable, picture quality second to none. Cant wait to have it calibrated, cant immagine a better picture, but calibration is a must on a unit as high end as the 8000.

Bought a Panasonic Viera GT 65" Plasma and just couldn't find a picture setting I was satisfied with. Swapped it with this one after the price dropped (and after a long conversation with an intelligent person at Best Buy) and wholy cow... this picture is phenominal! Loved Samsung monitors before this, but decided on the Pany due to price. So happy I swapped and paid the extra for the Sammy.
Now, you know it's a pretty big deal when even the wife can see a difference! Lol.

I have had this TV for a month. I was watching Star Wars on Blue-ray a couple of nights ago and thought, "Who needs to go to the theater?" The picutre is just amazing. It was easy to customize the video settings to match the character of my room with the user friendly menu options. The only thing I'm not real wild about is the sound, but for a TV not much over an inch deep, how big of a speaker can you put in it? A nice receiver and speakers are the way to go with this theater size screen. I bought it as an open item, so I wisely purchased the Black Tie service. I noticed two lines of pixels had gone out after a few days, so I called service and they replaced the screen. That was a positive experience with no hassles. Thanks to the Geek Squad!

What's not so great: Plasma humming noise during quiet movies
The picture is gorgeous. However, when sitting in normal position (8 ft away), there's a soft but audible hum that is distracting during quiet movies. It basically ruins the home theater experience. Very disappointed that after so much attention was given to picture quality, the rest of the design / construction is inferior. According to Samsung authorized service technician who came to look at my TV, the humming noise is coming from the internal power supplies and can't be fixed.
The SmartApps are too cumbersome to navigate and too slow to make use of everyday.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Almost bought an Elite LED LCD, but the off-axis blooming was terrible. REALLY glad I didn't. The Samsung has excellent picture quality at all angles. Lots of calibrations options, love the remote... and the 3D is amazing. (Buy the good glasses though.) Worth every penny.
