What's great about it: Voice recognition, European maps
What's not so great: No significant problems
When I went to England with my first Wife in 2004 we spent half the vacation arguing about traffic directions. The worst point was trying to find the rental car return at Heathrow when we were late for our flight out. I really think this experience contributed to the end of our marriage. In July of 2011 I took my new (and greatly improved) Wife to England. Not wanting to repeat my earlier experience I purchased a GPS in the US so that I could learn how to use it before I took it to the UK. The first GPS I bought in the US was a TomTom VIA which had a lot of nice features including voice recognition. Unfortunately I discovered that for some reason TomTom had not provided European maps for this particular model (strange since TomTom is a European company and I have seen other TomToms work in Europe). With about a week to go before our trip I ordered this Garmin online through BestBuy. It worked fine straight out of the box in the US and its voice recognition feature didn't require you to press anything on the screen (unlike the TomTom). It also came pre-loaded with European maps at no additional charge (TomTom charges $70 for additional maps when they are available). Sitting in my rental car at Heathrow with my new Wife by my side I installed the GPS and turned it on. The last thing that I needed after having travelled for 18 hours was having to navigate to an obscure location in the UK using a map. After the GPS booted I said: "voice command" - without a blip the machine responded. I told the machine the address that we were staying at and it figured out that we were no longer in California and plotted our route without any difficulty. The one weird thing was that it speaks the English street names with an American accent which can be confusing. The entire time that we were there this thing never missed a beat. The critical test was getting the rental car back to the rental car return at Heathrow. This proved to be a bit of challenge as the traffic pattern at heathrow is so convoluted that the GPS couldn't refresh fast enough to keep up in some places. However with the assistance of the GPS we were only delayed 15 minutes rather than forty-five minutes like last time. My Wife returned to the US happy rather than totally upset. This was well worth the $250.
I would recommend this to a friend!
