What's great about it: Very little noise at high ISO
This was a step up from a Coolpix 5700 so some key features are an attraction to me. I love the larger sensor but miss the ability to print D picture size - most SLRs only print 6*4. I also miss the ability to synch the flash greater than 1/200s - again an SLR "limitation". I did not purchase the kit lens but preferred to get the 35m prime lens with a 55-200mm zoom. The kit lens max aperture at 35mm focal length is around f/4.5 but my prime has f/1.8 so I can take great picture indoors without flash. The sweet spot for sharpness is around aperture f/4 for the 35mm prime. The ISO sensitivity for this camera is great and I can barely see noise (@100% zoom on an HD monitor screen) even at 1200 ISO. The D-lighting feature is also addictive and can enhance pictures that are backlit. I do believe the default Standard Picture Control settings for Sharpness need to be bumped up for sharp edges. Another great feature that my Coolpix did not have is Auto ISO with a control on Max ISO at the same time. This limits the noise on hand held shots in bad light by working with minimum shutter of 1/30s in tandem with max ISO. The camera is small and light and the buttons are perfectly placed - within easy reach of all fingers of one hand. I rarely use Live view or Movie mode so cannot speak to that. The built-in TTL flash is pretty powerful and can handle subjects over 20ft indoors with balanced lighting all over the frame.

What's great about it: Price, ease of use, Battery life, Multi-angle screen
In camera HDR is awesome. I stepped up from the D3100 which by the way is a great beginners camera with its built in guide mode. The D5100 takes and produces great colorful photos with great quality. It has a great multitude of in camera settings including HDR. You will not find a better camera in this price range. I have not found any issues with the camera at all.

What's great about it: Effects mode and Low light performance
What's not so great: Movie mode...... but if you want a movie camera then buy one.
Purchased the camera after weeks of research. I couldn't get past the effect modes (especially the color selection) Pictures turn our great. Very responsive processing. Add a Nikon Vibration Reduction lens and your set.. The D5100 is a step above other DSLRs.
