What's great about it: AirPlay is a great built in feature and size is good
What's not so great: Set up can be cumbersome and not entirely intuitive.
Nervous to spend this much on a receiver at first but decided to give it a try and glad I did. Works well, has great sound and picture.

What's great about it: Solid build quality, easy to set up and use, great feature set
What's not so great: Modest power output, price if not on sale
It was time for me to upgrade my system to HDMI in anticipation of purchasing a new HD/3D TV, and so I visited my local Best Buy a couple of times to audition A/V receivers in my price range. After some consideration, I chose the Marantz NR 1402 5.1 surround sound A/V receiver.
Even though I liked the NR 1402 and will most likely keep a 5.1 configuration, I decided to take a peek online at the owners manual for the NR 1602, the 7.1 model in the Marantz slimline range.
I immediately realized that the NR 1602 has a lot more features, ones which I can actually use and enjoy, so I returned the NR 1402 (no hassles, thank you Best Buy!) and purchased the NR 1602. The price was $300 more, however the difference was definitely worth it.
The most obvious upgrade is the internet connectivity feature which allows me to access just about as many sources of music and radio entertainment as I can possibly need. Using a NETGEAR powerline adapter,(model Model: XEB1004-100NAS | SKU: 8684408) I was able to quickly and easily connect the NR 1602 to the internet.
Much like other receivers on the market, the NR 1602 will connect to Pandora, Rhapsody and Napster, Flickr for photo sharing, and multitudes of internet radio stations. In addition I can play music from my iTunes library using the AirPlay feature. My favorite feature is that I can use my iPad2 (or my iPhone 3GS) as a remote control for the NR 1602. Simply download the app and away you go. Coupled with the fact that the iPad2 also serves as a remote for my FIOS set top box, I can operate pretty much everything I need without an expensive universal remote control.
Another feature that I will take advantage of goes back to the fact that I only intend to run a 5.1 sound system. That leaves me two more amps that I can either assign to power a second zone (right out of the box which is nice), or better still, to bi-amp a set of front Left/Right speakers for listening to music in stereo. I realize that the NR 1602 has a modest 50W/CH output, but I'll go out on a limb and say that the Marantz amps are surely not over rated, and maybe slightly under rated in their output.
I demoed the NR 1602 in the Best Buy store using each speaker set in the B&W 600 series and in that setting my observation was that the NR 1602 is able to adequately power them all, including the B&W 683B. In fact the B&W683 which has the FST mid-range driver sounded best which was no surprise. My hope is that with the bi-amp capability of the NR 1602, I will be able to power a front stage of B&W 683B's along with the matching HTM61B center channel with perhaps a pair of B&W M1's for the rear, or perhaps a pair of B&W 685B's on stands in the rear stage. Minimally I believe the NR 1602 can power B&W 684B (floor standers) or 685B's up front along with a matching HTM62B center channel.
For programming the unit, the Marantz NR 1602 uses an on screen GUI which is simple, legible, and uses graphics that are acceptable and certainly better looking than some of the MS-DOS GUI's I have seen and read about in this price range (are you listening Pioneer?) It also uses Audyssey Multi-EQ for tailoring the sound to the room. It's a pretty decent system and is very easy to use with the included acoustic microphone and onscreen guide. If you want to dig into the menu you will find the NR 1602 offers a great deal of custom program-ability. The NR 1602 also decodes the major sound codecs up to Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.
Lastly is the appearance and build quality of the Marantz NR 1602, both of which I find to be excellent. For some, a two tiered shiny box full of air is an exciting proposition, however I find the compact style and solid feel of this unit to be very appealing. The matte-black finish and Denon-esque front graphics are attractive and concise. The look is balanced and clean. I am also anticipating purchasing the Marantz UD 5005 universal disc player which looks as though it is housed in the same chassis and should make for a pretty solid system aesthetically. Lift the NR 1602 and you will be amazed at how brick-like it feels. No wasted space within the box! And Marantz offers a 3 year warranty on the NR 1602 which is testament to the overall quality of the unit.
Overall I would recommend the Marantz NR 1602 for the person who likes a lot of features for the money, but appreciates the "less is more" philosophy of design.

What's great about it: Size, features, useability
What's not so great: Power, setup
The networking features on this amp are really well done. I use Pandora, sharing from a DLNA source (Synology DS207+ NAS) and the streaming radio. I dislike all things Apple, so I do not use the airplay features. I especially liked how it knew my location and showed me all of the streaming radio stations local to my area. No need to hook an antenna up to it at all! Everything appears to work well. I have not run into any bugs yet.
I like that I can control this amp via web browser or via a Android app. The Android app is written by an individual not associated with Marantz, but it is free and I found it to be very well implemented. Marantz has an iApp but nothing for Android yet. Not sure what is taking them so long, but I don't really miss it due to the quality of the third party app.
I own a Sonos system and this amp offers all I need in my media room, so I was able to forgo the expense of another ZonePlayer in this area.
Aside from the its networking features, this Amp really fulfills all of my needs. I was a little concerned that it was not powerful enough, but I was pleasantly surprised how well it drove my Klipsch RB-35 Home Theater speaker system. It could be a little more powerful, but given the benefits of its small size, I am more than satisfied. If you really want to blow the house down go for one of their full sized amps. For theater sounding movies and cranking up the occasional song this amp does the trick for me.
As far as usability, I really like how I was able to set this amp up to make it easy for my not so technically inclined family to use. All they have to worry about is turn one dial and select the source they want with labels that I set, and turn the other dial to set the volume.
I will say that it took a little searching in the menus to set things up exactly the way I wanted but that's part of the fun part of setting up new gear for me. I had to refer to the web a couple of times to figure out exactly how to accomplish a couple of things (this is a rare event for me), but again, once I got it set up I really like the results and I haven't had to mess with it at all.
I like the ability it has to update firmware online. It also appears that they may allow you to add features to your amp down the road. I am not sure what this is about as there are none available as of yet, and I am willing to bet this may cost money, but it is an interesting concept.
In summary, until something comes along that can handle online video sources as well as this handles online audio sources I am totally happy with this purchase
