What's great about it: Small Footprint, Supports Several Devices
What's not so great: FM Radio Reception
The general performance of this receiver is good if you're using it for Home Theatre and attached peripherals. If like, me.. you love to blare the radio while you're working around the house.. buy something else. For the money, I expected outstanding performance in all functions, not just Home Theatre. I had Geek Squad come out and set everything up with a Harmony Remote and they did a great job.

What's great about it: Size / Price
I have always been a Marantz fan, but I wanted something smaller for my NYC Apartment. I walk into Best Buy and they have exactly what I was hoping for: a small form factor Marantz Receiver!
Sound quality is High End (I'll save "excellent" for the $$$ stuff)
Setup with the Mic is a snap (you do need it connected to a TV)
"Value" for a high end receiver is very good
Only problem: Best Buy Sales person stated that it was 5.0, not 5.1 so tried to up-sell me to the next level since "this can't take a subwoofer." Thankfully I didn't believe her so I pulled it out, plugged in a sub and sure enough: it works just fine!
She did apologize when I pointed this out to her (she was new and admitted she didn't know much about this piece of equipment).
I've had it for a while now and it still sounds great! (connected to B&W speakers)

What's great about it: Sound quality, features, Energy Star and Price
What's not so great: Nothing, it meets my needs just fine.
I was looking for a home theater received that would meet my input and output requirements and was energy star compliant.
The name (Marantz) is well respected and it did not let me down.
I used my tower stereo speakers, bookshelf speakers and a subwoofer. I did have to buy a center channel speaker after I learned that 5.1 outputs vocals (conversations) mainly thru the center speaker.
The unit has the mic for auto setup, now that I have figured it out I simply adjust the distances away from the listening area for each speaker to get the desired relative volume (if the surround speakers are overpowering on a certain source I will make them "closer"). You can also adjust the crossover for the sub, L R and middle speaker!
The THD is VERY low and the sound in general is great. The price was good, low end of the Audiophile models.
Got there and found it to be $50 cheaper than the web price!
The standby mode was a bonus....the Satellite is connected to the receiver via HDMI, then the receiver to the TV also via HDMI. If the receiver is on then the sound goes thru the receiver speakers. If I put the receiver in standby the the satellite will still play to the TV and thru the tv speakers. Not too sure that is the case for all input devices.

What's great about it: Ease of set up, sound, size
What's not so great: Made in China.
I thought I had a good home theatre set up until I decided to change the reciever to this Marantz. I am replacing an old Onkyo that is close to 13 years old. I could not believe how easy it was to set up. System sound is really balanced. I used to have to crank up the volume on the old unit in order to get a full sound. Now it sounds great at all volume levels. My. Wife, who is not into home theatre at all even agrees the sound is awesome. I now find her showing the sound off to her friends.

What's great about it: size
What's not so great: sub hookup
We just got this set up and working today so still dealing with a few new things to get used to but overall so far so good. I am not happy that my existing sub won't work with it because the connection is RCA jack not standard speaker. I will take some of the blame for that for listening to Dumbo at Best Buy. I told him what I had and wanted and he said this would work so I didn't double check the back. So I will either buy a new sub or an amp to make the conversion. I am considering returning this for one that has the traditional speaker connections but this one fits perfectly in the space I have which is why I bought it in the first place. I would reccomend this for others just make sure you check your connections. Also if you have two Samsung devices the Anynet jumps in and makes things a little tricky so hopefully that will be worked out.

What's great about it: Sound
My requirements were
a) HDMI
b) 5.1 and
c) as good a sound as possible.
I didn't need networking since I have AppleTV. The decision came to be between Marantz 1402 and Denon 1612.
With Denon, there are some people complaining about quality issues, especially on Amazon on their other large selling models. There were not many reviews of Marantz (which costs $100 more) and but all outstanding.
I replaced a 10 year old Denon AVR 3200 and am totally blown away by clean sound from the Marantz. They drive my full size JBL L890 ( front speakers in 5.1) without complaint though listed max RMS power is less.
Small negative - the main PDF documentation sucks. I still can't figure out how to program remote properly. But thankfully I was able to add receiver into my FiOS remote without trouble.
And helpful sales person at BestBuy gave me a nice discount to reduce that difference ! In the end, I bought HDMI cables at higher price and returned some of that discount back to BestBuy. But no waiting for Amazon shipping and possible damage in transit.
Thanks Marantz for making this perfect unit, and thanks to Bestbuy for being just 3 miles nearby, no waiting for shipping and a great price!

What's great about it: Compact Size
I have only had the receiver for about 2 weeks, but I love it. I like all of HDMI inputs (that are labeled for easy installation of the other components). I do not have it hooked up to surround speakers or subwoofer (we live in an condo), but the sound is better than my old pioneer VSX-816. I have 2 Bose 501 speakers with a Bose center speaker, and the base is great even without the subwoofer. The set up with the microphone was convenient (and easy). The only thing I can't do, that I wish I could (that would give it 5 stars) is to listen to the radio while my son plays video games.
The reason I bought it was for the compact size. My wife bought an entertainment center she liked, and I had to find a receiver that fit it. This was only one of two that I found. But, I feel very lucky, because I think this is a big improvement, and I'm happy I had to make the switch.

Don't be fooled by the wattage of this unit. It will easily power any speakers, and play at rock concert levels (110db). The claimed wattage is true, and they are "clean" watts, with a harmonic distortion of only .08% which is fantastic. Look at the weight of this receiver. Notice it is a slim model, yet weighs twice as much as those gazillion watt receivers that are cheaper? All in all, this is the best 5.1 receiver around, and has vivid sound, and amazing build quality.

What's great about it: Price point & features
What's not so great: Not for everyone
I'm not sure what the first user was talking about, but this receiver has the easiest setup feature I've ever used. In under an hour, I had everything wired up, powered on, Audyssey setup complete, and I was ready to go.
It's pretty simple which port the mic needs to be plugged into. Probably the one that's labeled "setup mic". Possibly, maybe.
If you've ever used a receiver with an included remote, raise your hand now. If you raised your hand, it means you're capable enough to know how to use a remote, or to read the owner's manual if you have trouble. If it takes you three weeks to configure your device(s), it's not the receiver's fault. If you are not competent to configure an AV receiver, there's always the geek squad at BB. Yet some people would rather come here and bash a product they don't understand. I found the setup very easy to follow. However, if this is your first receiver, I would recommend having the manual in hand upon the initial configuration.
Back to the receiver...for $400, you can't go wrong. I've had mine since mid May of this year. It's simple, sleek, and doesn't have a billion features that I'll never use. No network, no airplay, no dual-zone, no 7.1, yet still decodes a wide variety of audio formats and has plenty of inputs. I looked at all brands before buying, with a budget of $600. Denon, Pioneer, Sony, Samsung, Yamaha, HK, etc.
I use this, along with my PS3, HTPC, and cable box. I have a 5.1 surround in a medium to large living room with no disappointments. I replaced a 3-4 year old HK receiver with this, and could not be happier. I use this for 2D and 3D video, gaming, and the occasional 2.1 audio. So far, no issues. No A/V sync or lag problems.
For those who are wondering, the volume is overlayed onto the tv screen, so changing the volume level is easy to read. If I had to have one complaint about this receiver, it would be that the front display is hard to read from 10ft away. But since things like adjusting volume and changing surround modes are overlayed onto the tv screen, it's not a problem.
All in all, for $400, this receiver is a great deal. As long as you don't need things like 7.1 surround, network connectivity, dual-zone audio, or usb. If you need those things, this receiver is not for you. Also, if you have very little cabinet/shelf space, this receiver is just over 4" tall. Aesthetically, it's as nice as it sounds.

What's great about it: Sounds great
What's not so great: Challenging to set up well
I bought this to replace a 12 year old receiver that had started to flake out on me. Plus, I wanted to pass video through it without loss since the old receiver of course would not have supported HDMI. My other devices are an Insignia LCD TV, Roku, and Blu-Ray player (plus L/R/C and rear speakers).
At first I was not happy with the way things were going. It has a built-in setup procedure to configure itself (unlike my old receiver). This includes a microphone on a long wire that must be plugged in. The getting started instructions did not say where to plug this in (there are 3 possibilities); it took me a little while to figure out I had it in the wrong audio jack. The next problem was that the remote was not working fully to navigate the setup UI... it would not let me advance to the next step, ignoring my button presses seemingly at random. Some of the buttons worked, but some did not. The getting started guide did not mention anything extra I was supposed to do. I had to start reading through the full manual to figure out what might be wrong. After 1 hour, I figured out that you must press the tiny "Amp" button that is well hidden on the remote... that makes all the buttons control the receiver instead of another device. It does not make sense to me that this is not the default and that the getting started could not have told me to do this; after all, how would they know the default is I want to control another device with this that I have not yet configured in the remote?
After the setup completed, I was then disappointed that the audio didn't sound right. It sounded harsh and tinny. I figured the sound field could be adjusted to make this better, but I didn't have much luck. I eventually figured out that this receiver works best if you have a subwoofer, which I did not have. My old receiver worked great without a subwoofer. So, I went back to BB and bought a very nice Polk subwoofer. That helped. Plus, I played around with the sound field choices to find which work better. Also, I found the setup kept making the center speaker louder relative to the other speakers than it needed to be. It took a few days, but I eventually found the setting that lets me lower that by a few decibels. Once done, the sound is good... very clear, sharp. If I'm watching a movie with lots of sound effects, it sounds good with the expected surround effects and deep booming sounds from the subwoofer.
The next problem I had was the TV audio. My TV has audio outputs for both analog and optical. I of course tried optical first, since isn't everything newer supposed to be better? Well, it had quite a horrendous audio sync problem with the audio happening about 1/3 of a second after the video. It was unbearable, and no setting in either the TV or the receiver could fix it (the audio delay feature in the receiver makes the audio even later, not earlier). However, this appears to be a design problem with the TV in that it is not sending out the digital audio properly synchronized; I don't think I can fault the receiver. I switched to analog cable, and now it works perfectly.
I also had an audio sync problem with the Roku device; the audio was a little before the video this time. The receiver's audio delay feature made that better; I set it to the max of 200ms. Fortunately, the receiver keeps track of this delay setting per input source, so it didn't mess up the other devices.
So, after several weeks of getting it to work nicely, I'm in good shape now. My minor annoyances now include: The on-screen UI assumes I know what I am doing; it needs to put text on the screen explaining what each setting and choice is (there's plenty of room for it, so why not?) The sound field choices are confusing and the remote cycles through them in a rather strange way, and it often decides to change the sound field choice for me. I'm not sure exactly what is going on here but it is probably considered a "feature" that I have yet to understand. For some reason, I can't get even the slightest hint of AM radio reception through it (FM works). The remote is confusing and buttons not laid out well - it seems to be random.
