What's great about it: Value, size and weight, colors and picture quality, WiFi
What's not so great: Smart TV UI
This TV is easily comparable to sets that cost hundreds of dollars more, and is a great value for the price. Beautiful picture quality, accurate and bright colors, deep blacks, crystal clear HD, and smooth natural motion. The TV is very thin and lightweight, with narrow bezel and a great looking design overall. Sound quality is good, and the remote has an intuitive layout. The built in WiFi and smart tv features are great, and worked right out of the box.
I recommend this TV without hesitation.
While my overall impression of this TV is resoundingly positive, there are some imperfections that might be important to some people. The TV does take a few seconds to turn on, and navigation through Netflix and some of the smart TV menus can be a bit sluggish. UI design for the smart TV menus isn't as slick as the UI for Apple TV or similar devices. Youtube and Hulu are notably absent, but Vudu and Blockbuster are built in and offer a wide range of streaming HD movies to rent. This is an edge lit LED TV, and there is a slight 'flashlighting' effect at the corners when displaying a totally black screen. The flashlighting vanishes completely as soon as anything is actually displayed on the screen. Sound is clear with plenty of volume, but lacks rich bass which should not be surprising given the size of the speakers. Also, the MediaConnect feature is a cool concept, but not quite ready for prime time. When connecting my computer to the TV over WiFi using MediaConnect, there is at least a 3 second lag between the computer and the TV. Still a neat idea though.
Considering the price and overall quality of this TV, I am more than willing to forgive these few imperfections.
Also worth noting are the color and image adjustments. This TV can produce some really bright, vivid, and saturated colors. So much so that if you get the settings wrong it can easily look over-saturated. However, if you get the settings tuned correctly the TV will produce nice accurate colors that have great contrast and clarity.
There is an automatic calibration wizard that runs the first time the TV is turned on. The calibration wizard presents you with a series of pictures, and asks you to pick the ones that look best. Settings are adjusted based on your preference. Like I said, this TV can produce some very vivid colors, so keep this in mind when running the setup wizard or else you may end up with over saturated or unnatural looking colors.
One last comment about the brand; I have heard that some people have negative opinions of the Philips brand, but I have bought a number of Philips products over the years and have been very happy with them all. Throughout most of the world Philips is considered to be a high-end electronics brand, and I am not sure why they get a bad rap here in the States. I have heard people mention that Philips sold it's TV division to a Chinese company, but when I researched the issue it appeared that products for the U.S. and (ironically) Chinese markets were not part of the deal.
All things considered, I am very happy with my purchase and feel I got a lot of TV for the money. I would definitely recommend this TV.
