What's great about it: Connectivity, Sound, Multizone, Ipod control and streaming
This is my second try at an HDMI receiver. First one (Pioneer not current line) was an EPIC failure as far as the HDMI connections were concerned. Sent it back some time ago. Note to Pioneer fans: I blame the complexity of HDMI not Pioneer. Make a cable where V=IR already! Like Hollywood makes a movie worth copying anymore!
I took this receiver out of the box, connected the speakers, the network, the Blu-ray, and my U-Verse receiver, turned it on and it worked. That easy. The HDMI pass through is OFF by default. Enabled that in the GUI..and that worked too. Zone 2 enabled set to FM receiver, while main zone was on HDMI1, and radio on the deck, tv in the house. No problem.
Maybe the coolest thing so far is that I hooked my Ipod up to the USB port, selected the USB input and then used my iPhone as a remote control from outside on the deck. The free iphone app let's you search and control the ipod and basic receiver controls (volume, input select, zone, etc). If using the USB port it even shows you the Now Playing with album art, allows searching by Artist, album, playlist, etc. Also can stream Pandora, Napster, etc.
NOTE: Does not have Airplay. I am using an IPOD in the USB and my iPhone as a controller.
UPDATE:
I downloaded an iphone app update for the Yamaha AV controller and can now play music directly from my iphone through the "pc" input. It has a small button with music notes on it as one of the choices. Clicked on it, it went to music menu on the phone, clicked play and it came out of the A710. Awesome.
If I could give it 6 stars, I would.
This product has... Plenty of power for all my needs, Interfaces well with TV, Easy to use controls, Good multi-zone capability, great ipod remote app for free
About me... Audiophile, Tech savvy

What's great about it: The sound is clean. Internet features are nice.
What's not so great: Bad Documentation, Non-intuitive controls, Lacks "OOMPH"
This purchase was an upgrade from a Yamaha HTR-5650 to get HDMI. To be honest, I have yet to be really "wowed" by this unit, even on blu-ray.
The unit is a little taller than the HTR-5650 (important to know if you are using a bell-o cabinet).
Setup was simple enough. The YPAO was fine. On screen displays are good, as well as the web content.
Documentation is severely lacking, which is a real downer since so many controls are quite well hidden.
Picture quality is superb.
The sound quality so far is nice, a bit cleaner than the 5650, but I have yet to notice that this unit is more powerful (something I would expect since I run Klipsch speakers and subwoofer).
Sound is extremely clean, but I was hoping for more OOMPH and WOW in a receiver that is more powerful than the one I previously used.
This product has... Interfaces well with TV, Good multi-zone capability

What's great about it: ease of use, sound and value
What's not so great: nothing
I hoped for something probably complex with good sound but found something that is so intuitive that I cant believe its not made by apple. In addition is got a great sound. then the two separate outputs is so handy I use them all the time. But the "killer" app is the web based control so I can be in the bedroom working, the tuner in the living room, and Im in complete control. Buy this. its FUN

What's great about it: HDMI ports, network apps (Pandora, Sirius, Napster, etc), Yamaha reputation
What's not so great: Nothing
My previous Yamaha I bought as a floor model, and it lasted me 7 years however all my A/V now is HDMI so it was time to upgrade. I wouldn't consider myself an audiophile, however I have a high level of technical expertise ...and even being very computer savvy I wasn't sure which one to buy. The Pioneer was out of the question, because it wants composite video to access the on screen menu, and several Onkyo posts talked about issues with the HDMI. I went with this receiver because of the strong reviews, and the reliability I had with my previous Yamaha.
Out of the box it was extremely easy to set up. I used the microphone to automatically set up my speaker levels. The manual did mention based on the acoustics of your room, that the set up may say your speakers are out of phase or reverse wired. If they are set up right, just ignore that message and save the configuration.
The picture and sound on this thing is fantastic paired with my Bose speakers. I set up Pandora with no problem and updated my Logitech Harmony 880 which controls everything great. I use it with a Panasonic Viera 54" 3DTV, Western Digital Live HD player, and Panasonic 3D blu-ray player. HDMI switching is quick and the picture is excellent going through the receiver. The Yamaha App on my Android phone is pretty cool too, though I doubt I'll use it.
My current set up is a 5.1, however I like this receiver because it gives me the option to expand in the future. I'd recommend this to anyone that isn't a hardcore audiophile, but wants a good quality receiver with room for expansion (it has plenty of HDMI ports) . This thing will last me at least 5+ years so the price tag is worth it..and really for $600 it really is a good buy compared to the other brands out there based on the features and reliability as stated in previous reviews. Spend the extra money and buy this product, because it will last you several years.

What's great about it: Setup, reliability, price, it's a Yamaha
What's not so great: Nothing so far
I have used Yamaha receivers for years now and just recently decided to 'stray' from Yamaha based on some reviews on a similar Onkyo receiver. Bad mistake. The Onkyo's audio quality was similar but it is now back out for warranty repair for ANOTHER HDMI board-joy. I went and bought this new Yamaha and couldn't be happier-never do I have problems like I have had with the Onkyo. Setup is a snap-like most Yamaha receivers-and sound/video quality is excellent.
