What's great about it: Features and performance of the machine itself
What's not so great: Badly organized documentation
I wanted to test out each function of this machine, so here’s what I did.
Copy. I wanted to duplex copy 10 single-sided sheets onto three sheets with two copies per side (four copies per sheet). I just loaded the originals into the ADF, adjusted the settings, pushed Start, and boom! half a minute later it was done.
Print. I had the machine print a regular letter-sized file as a booklet. All I had to do fold the printed pages in two, staple them, and the booklet had correctly numbered pages.
Scan. I stuck a 30-page document into the automatic feeder, then sat back and watched it fly through the machine and assemble on my computer.
I haven't had the machine long enough to use up the starter print cartridge and so can't speak to how rapidly it uses up ink. I do like the availability of a toner saver setting (which I use along with brightness/contrast to adjust the print darkness) and a high-yield cartridge.
I love what the machine itself can do but have reservations about the software and the documentation, which is inconvenient and arbitrary. The Basic User’s Guide packed with the machine covers just simple copying and scanning, along with replacing consumables. The files on the enclosed CD (which won’t copy onto my desktop, nor can I even fit the CD into my laptop) are additional manuals: one is the Advanced User’s Guide, which covers general setup, copying, and routine maintenance. Another is the Software User’s Guide, which explains printing and network scanning for Windows/Mac and using the ControlCenter Utility. Finally there is a Network User’s Guide and a Network Glossary, with which I’m not bothering.
I have no idea how Brother decided on the contents of each manual, but their reasoning makes no sense to me. It’s extremely annoying to have to refer to the User’s Guides chart in the Basic manual to try to figure out which of them to consult.
The ControlCenter Utility is definitely loaded on my desktop but won’t open. I found complaints on the Internet from other users (including those with other operating systems) who have had the same problem. Brother’s e-mail tech support was no help, and from what I’ve read, telephone support just wastes your time on diagnostics before announcing that it’s an OS problem. The utility is just a convenience for accessing the machine’s software, which I can do on my own, and because it’s an extra, I’m just not bothering with it.

Great price and a quality product. We've replaced our inkjet printer for a laser printer and couldn't be happier! The toner that came with the printer didn't last very long but that is to be expected if you read the details of the product first.
