What's great about it: You can hear the actors dialogue perfectly
What's not so great: hard to find a local seller
"This is probably the best center channel speaker available for home theatre. i was careful to make sure my other speakers were made by bose also. They match up perfectly with great surround sound effects"

A very nice center channel speaker

What's great about it: Low profile. Good sound production
What's not so great: Requires some set up
"Based on the reviews that I saw on this site and elsewhere on the internet, I was hesitant about buying this speaker. However, I received the Bose 161 speakers as a gift and was very pleased with the sound, so decided to take a risk on the VCS-10. I was not disappointed.
I got rid of the old center channel speaker and initially noticed that the voices were somewhat muffled as other reviewers had indicated, but once I calibrated the speaker, I got great sound. Since there were so many very negative scathing reviews, I wanted to provide another positive prospective.
This speaker has a tiny footprint and is placed below my HDTV on its original stand and it doesn't block any of the screen. The voices sound crisp and cleaer. Also the speaker has good volume. I had been looking for a new center channel speaker to replace the ones that came with my Sony receiver and now I'm done looking.
I'm not an audiophile per say, but I am picky. This speaker delivered on all that I expected of it. I'm sure that there are better speakers than this (the only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars), but this is a great speaker and I am extremely happy with it."

Major Disappointment!!

What's great about it: Great looking Center Channel Speaker.
What's not so great: Sound Quality is HORRIBLE!!
"Let me start by saying I am a big Bose fan. I currently own a Bose Acoustimass 10 III system and love everything about it except for the center channel speaker. When looking to upgrade, I naturally went with a Bose product. Well, I've never been more disappointed. The VCS-10 is a poor excuse for a center channel speaker. The sound was very muffled and it did not project clear, crisp, true dialogue, as a center channel should. The dialogue was also dull and had no body or tonal accuracy. The speaker has a max power of 100w and can't handle the power of most receivers out there or 5.1 soundtracks. The 4 mid range drivers in the unit are identical. There is no tweeter to zero in on the highs or a woofer type speaker to pick up the bass and low frequency effects of the dialogue, without having to rely on the subwoofer. The VCS-10 has an "articulating array" that sets the drivers at an angle that is "off center", creating a large, curved sound field. The curve in the sound field doesn't allow the center channel dialogue to be locked or anchored to the screen. Instead, the sound is intermingled with that of the left and right front channels, taking much away from the 5.1 experience. I was so much in denial that this Bose product could be so bad, I thought the only logical answer to the poor quality was that one or more of the drivers were defective. After confirming that all the drivers were working properly, I performed every diagnostic test and made every adjustment possible. It still sounded the same. I did extensive research and decided to return the VCS-10. I purchased the Def Tech Pro Center 1000. I could not believe the difference in sound! For $20 more than the Bose VCS-10, I invested in a speaker that sounds like it could cost $200 more. It has everything the Bose does not; 200w of power, a crisp tweeter and two pressure driven woofers on the sides of the speaker that brings warmth to the dialogue. It is simply incredible. For those of you considering the VCS-10 and those who gave it high marks, do a sound comparison with the Def Tech 1000 the next time you're at a Best Buy store. You will hear for yourself that the VCS-10 does not deserve to display the Bose name."

What's great about it: Easy setup
What's not so great: A little pricey
"I have researched all the reviews and was surprized at all the negitive feedback, but experience and reputation of Bose sound quality dictated my purchase of this speaker. Shipping was prompt and setup was simple on my Denon AVS reciever. I connected the speaker, ran the audio setup program and it was done! The sound is awesome! It does everything it was designed to do. The VCS-10 complements my Bose Acoustimass 5 front speakers system and Bose 201 rear speakers with its performance. I didn't need to preform any special "tweaking" of the system."

Very Dissapointed

What's great about it: Low Profile, Can be placed anywhere, Has a sleek look
What's not so great: Other then the good looks, everything else sucks about it.
"I currently have the 5.1 Bose acoustimass 10 cube speakers, I run them off of my Harmon Kardon AVR 254. Overall the sound is really good except for the center channel, the dialogue sounds very muffled, i tuned down the bass and increased the treble and still no good. I even changed the dB on the center to +10 and reduced the left and right speaker all the way down to -2 and it still sounded awful. I decided to invest in a center channel speaker that was $250 or less so I went with this Bose VCS-10 thinking it would greatly improve the overall sound, especially in the dialogue. To my surprise, it was still no good. It sounded a little bit better but not worth the $200 I paid for it, I was very dissapointed. For those who think maybe I didn't calibrate properly, trust me I did everything that can be done and I'm very technical when it comes to setting up audio. This speaker doesn't even have a tweeter to pick up on the highs, as far as bass on this Bose speaker it's non-existent but that's no big deal because that's what the sub is for so I won't knock this speaker based on that. I returned the speaker very soon after I bought it, I was thinking of getting the Polk Audio CS-10 but it was too bulky, it wouldn't fit where I needed it too. I finally came across the Definitive Technology Pro Center 1000 and WOW!!!! This center channel is amazing, it has to be the best center channel in the $200 price range. With all honesty, those looking for a center channel with clean and clear crisp dialogue you will not go wrong with this one! This center channel is also much louder then the Bose, It has a tweeter to pick up on highs and the bass really comes out nicely as well. I had to tune down the dB down a lot to balance with the other Bose speakers that I have. So for anyone looking for a center channel speaker, skip the Bose and get the Definitive Pro Center 1000, trust me when I tell you that you won't regret it!"

What's great about it: Does what a center channel should
What's not so great: Demands alot of power
"Not sure what the naysayers are talking about. I've been through 4 complete home theater set-ups, from Yamaha to Mirage to Klipsch to Polk, a little bit of every type of speaker and I think this Bose holds its own against most of them, not all of them (had a top of the line Kipsch center that was amazing), but most of them. While it does demand more than its share of power it rewards the listener with strong, clear sound. It is a fine addtiion to a better than average system, don't buy it if your using some sort of theater-in-a-box beginner's system. You need to have a tuner that can handle it and speakers that can hold their own against it. And dont' buy it because its a Bose, buy it for the sound, not the name."

What's great about it: Clear, crisp dialogue; small size
What's not so great: Bose is always a bit highter priced and never on sale
"I just purchased the Bose center channel speaker for my surround sound system. I cannot believe what a difference it makes to the theatre experience. My wife even noticed how much better everything sounds. Some reviewers give it low marks, but I question how they set it up. You very easily can understand the dialogue as it is very crisp and clean. I have it tied into my present Bose Acoustimass seven speaker system, which has four front cubes, subwoofer and two rear speakers. It is very important that the speakers all match. Maybe that was a problem with some of the other reviewers. One reviewer mentioned he could barely hear the dialogue. I feed my center channel through my Onkyo SR-706 receiver like I do for the rest of my system. Understanding the dialogue is easy and it is plenty loud enough after I calibrated my system through my receiver's calibration system. I am completely satisfied with the product as my home theatre experience just moved to another level."

What's great about it: Looks great!
What's not so great: poor excuse for a center channel, very muddy sound
"Let me say that I am a huge Bose fan. However the VCS-10 was a huge disappointment. It will not deliver as a center channel. Even when amp is maxed out for center channel volume, it still sounds very muddy. I kept it 29 days and then returned to best buy. Bose dropped the ball on this one. I suggest that you demo this speaker in the store before you buy. I got the Polk CS10 and I like it and saved 20 bucks. The Polk CS10 blends well with my Bose AM5 cube speakers."

Great but not quite 5 star

"I have had this center speaker for several years now. It is just that a center channel speaker. It has four identicle drivers in a slim good-looking box.
I did have to do some fiddling around to get the sound to my liking, but once i did, the sound was pretty good.
There was just something not all there. It is hard to explain except that the voices during a movie just didnt sound or "feel" right. When you are watching a movie you want your center speaker to give the illusion that the sound is coming right out of the mouths of the actors on your screen, and this just seemed not to fully accomplish that. Maybe i need to fiddle a little more with settings or placement or something.
By Brother in law has a Klipsch center (which i won't fully name since i'm not sure B.B has them) that i hooked up and tried. I would have to say it was top notch. But i know it cost about twice as much too.
All and all it is not a bad set. But if you are looking for the absolute best on a center speaker, try a few others as well before you make up your mind."

Mixed Feelings
01/11/2009

"I've never had a center channel speaker and I heard one of my buddies' and it sounded good. I spent a lot of time looking at different speakers and I decided to try the Bose VCS-10 because it fit in my spot perfectly. When I set it up I was a little disappointed at first because I could barely hear it. I had to turn my center channel power on my receiver to +10 and the power on the right and left fronts to -3 to make it sound the way it should. Now that I have the power set correctly it is pretty nice but it isn't as good as I thought it would be considering how awesome people say Bose is. I like the sound of having a center channel and my system sounds better now but I don't know if it would sound just as good with a less expensive center channel. I know that there are better speakers out there, my buddy has a Klipsch c-2 and I think that it sounds quite a bit better than this Bose but the Klipsch is bigger and it wouldn't fit into my spot. I would have to get a different tv stand, which I was thinking about doing just so I could get a Klipsch. Right now I am on Day 11 of the 30 days I have to return it so I will take my time to make my decision."

What's great about it: low profile
What's not so great: sound reproduction
"I purchased this speaker for $200 about 4 years ago and cannot believe that this product is still on the market! It looks great and has a low profile, but lets be real, what matters is the sound quality. I tried two different amplifiers and still had the same problem. The voices sound muffled and you can barely hear them. For a center channel that's a real problem. I would not recommend this product to anyone."

What's great about it: Fits into a limited space
What's not so great: Overpowered by speakers of average sensitivity
"This speaker does not project well into a room of average size unless you are cranking up the volume . it is ok for home theater but not recommended if you listen to music. it is easily overpowered by speakers of average sensitivity and you really need to tweak the amp to get full sound from the center channel"

"I almost didn't order this based on the poor reviews and Consumers Reports findings. I needed a thin center speaker to go with the acoustimass cubes - this was the logical choice. After researching it at length there were mixed reviews with many negative comments. I called Cruthfield and the Bose Outlet to get their opinions. They were surprised to hear that there were negative comments. The Bose outlet advised theirs sounded great and noted it must be hooked directly to the receiver - not the module like the cubes. I have had the speaker for a couple weeks and it sounds great. I have two other surround systems, one high end and a lower end system and the Bose performs admirably for such a compact system. The articulation of words coming from the center speaker sounds like a real person. I don't understand the bad reviews - unless it's not being connected properly. Worked for me - and as most retailers note you can always send it back."

The Truth

What's great about it: Compact enough to mount above TV
What's not so great: Voices are not clear, drivers too small
"When I read all the 5 star reviews, I decided to do my own review so the Bose fan-boys don't mislead perspective buyers. This is not a 5 star center channel speaker. I have owned this for 2 years and regretted buying it from day one. Read some reviews on another site before plunking down $199 for this speaker. The drivers are way to small to provide the type of sound that most receivers are capable of today. You have to over amp the speaker in order to hear dialog clearly. You can do much better for the same money with a Polk, Klipsch, or similar."

What's great about it: Compact desisgn, great sound
What's not so great: none
"I have a 5.1 HTS. I have a Bose VCS 10 center channel speaker. It produces amazing sound. The sound is lifelike, rich, and the highs and lows are great. I never thought sound could come out of that small compact design. The size is great because i can put it right on top of my TV. This VCS 10 goes great with the Bose 301 Direct/reflecting speakers and the 201 Direct reflecting speakers. I recommend this to anyone looking for the best sound."

What's great about it: Size and The sound
What's not so great: Too much bass
"This is an amazing center channel speaker for how much I payed for. I have a 7.1 setup and this just blows all of my other speakers out of the water. I previously had all Insignia speakers. The only reason I bought those was because they were cheap. DO NOT BUY INSIGNIA SPEAKERS. Now I am either going to buy the Bose 201 bookshelf speakers or the Bose 161 bookshelf speakers to complete the home theater."

What's great about it: excellent product
What's not so great: a little pricey
"I've been suffering from a mild hearing loss and have been frustrated over not being able to hear dialogue in our surround sound system. Rather than spend over $1000 on a new system, we decided to simply upgrade the center speaker on our existing 5.1 system. What an incredible difference this Bose speaker makes! We no longer have to blare our speakers to hear voices. Normal sound levels produce an extremely crisp center channel and our entire system has been transformed by adding this one Bose speaker!"
