What's great about it: Thin & small but bigger screen than iPAD
What's not so great: Short battery life
I bought this ultathin laptop for traveling purpose. Everything is designed for travel: small, thin and easy to carry or pack. The only drawback is no DVD drive but don't really need it for travel unless you want to watch DVD movie on it then you need to by an external DVD drive. The battery life is not that great but it's about the same for all small laptop notebook like this.
This product is... Good sound quality, A touch pad that works great, Perfect for Business, Easy to set up and is lightning fast, A nice compact size, bigger screen than ipad

What's great about it: Weight, performance, price
What's not so great: fan a little too loud when all is quiet
This is a great laptop. It is the lightest that I have found on the market with the performance and ports. It has both a VGA and an HDMI port, so I can use it when traveling and hook it up to two monitors when working in my office. I highly recommend this laptop to anyone who is tired of lugging around heavy laptops. There is no question it is fragile due to its very light weight, so one has to be careful when putting in the briefcase or backpack. The fan is loud when all is quiet and I am in bed doing some work. I think Toshiba did a great job creating such a compact machine with long battery life and all the ports available. Well done.

What's great about it: Size, LIGHTNESS, portability
What's not so great: Keyboard responsiveness.
I'm using my new Portégé for this review. I am getting used to the keyboard the more I use it, but I have to admit it has been a struggle. Although the keys have a shallow depression height, I find myself typing like I used to on a regular electric typewriter, hitting the keys almost like a manual (like in my highschool typing class so I know whereof I speak.) Some might find that more difficult to get used to than I have. I still miss the period and hit the spacebar instead of the "b" occasionally, but much less often.
That said, this computer is still everything I was looking for and I'm not in the slightest bit unhappy I purchased it. I am retired and am now writing full-time. I needed a computer portable enough I could take it anywhere. I wanted to be able to write on and edit books and short stories, do blog posts, handle several email accounts and Facebook, and handle everyday snapshots. Mostly I store and organize pics before putting them on a flash drive - not a lot of graphics usage.
I tried a netbook initially, but after a while I got lost in the where-did-I-update-my-story-last quandary and decided I needed a laptop small enough to be portable and large enough to be my main personal computer. This is it. Oh, man. It's two and a half pounds, the exact weight of my netbook, which now seems clubby in comparison. I find myself grabbing it and waving it around to show people pics of the kids from Facebook (carefully, of course.) I didn't even do that with the netbook.
The only thing I was worried about was the screen. I saw a few reviews where people said the screen cracked and it wasn't covered by Toshiba. Although I ordered the computer online through BestBuy, I brought it to the store to purchase an insurance agreement that includes accidental damage (including the screen.) It was less expensive in the store than online and I could get it for one year instead of two. Since they need to see that it's in proper working order and not damaged already, it was still in it's UPS packing wrapper when I brought it in.
The best part was when several techs in the Geek Squad gathered around to take an appreciative look while we did the paper work. It impresses everywhere I go. What's not to like about that? I saw several reviews from people who were not impressed with the case. It's not showy. It's like brushed steel. I think it's elegant in an understated, utility way. The brushed finish shows almost no handling marks. The keys are matte black, but shine where I hit them the most - not optimal. The right and left buttons on the touch pad are chrome, so I buff them periodically. They definitely show smudges, but that's a minor complaint.
Another outstanding feature is the speed. It boots a lot faster than anything I've had before, no doubt due to the SSD drive in lieu of a spinning hard drive. I have it set to sleep when it's closed; it wakes up in 2 seconds flat when I open it. Unlike the netbook, I can pull the screen up without having to hold the keyboard down. That's a definite plus.
In order to save space and lessen the weight, it doesn't have an optical drive. I needed an external CD/DVD drive for the netbook in any case, and would rarely need one away from home, so I don't consider that a bad thing. For when I'm gone for an extended length of time, I bought an inexpensive insulated tote that's big enough for the Portégé , the netbook (both in travel cases,) their charging cords, a handful of thumb drives, the external CD/DVD drive and a couple of mice. On the floor of the front seat it looks like I'm going on a picnic and the electronics don't get overheated. When I take it to a meeting three hours from home, I leave everything in the tote except for the Portégé in a faux-leather sleeve that looks like a manila envelope and which fits in my purse.
Finally, the battery. It is advertised for up to eight hours. It has an Eco-mode, which shuts off the backlit keyboard, dims the display and shortens the time to sleep-mode. That way it would probably last eight hours. I have the keyboard lit, the screen brighter than the default and the other settings lengthened. I still get four-and-a-half to five hours of battery time before it warns me to plug it in. That's long enough for most any meeting.
Bottom line, I've got some complaints, but all in all I'm thrilled with this computer.
This product is... Easy to set up and is lightning fast, A nice compact size, exceptional battery life

What's great about it: fast, light, boots quickly
What's not so great: display is fragile, unit is fragile, keyboard
There are so many reviews that you can see all the good things. So, let me just point out the flaws I ran into:
The keyboard is just awful, especially the space bar
The hinges are flimsy
The shell is flimsy
and most important. The display on mine was working fine one night and on booting the next morning was full of lines.
Sent it to toshiba and they wouldn't cover under warranty, said I damaged it. I didn't, but upon close inspection there was a flaw in the bezel, right at the point where the lines started. They wanted 325 bucks to fix it! Did it myself with a replacement bought online.
Do a little research and you will find this exact complaint.
I would suggest doing a little shopping and finding a more durable machine.
This product is... Perfect for Business, A nice compact size, flimsy, isn't backed by toshiba, good concept poor execution

What's great about it: Very light weight. Love the Backlit Keyboard.
What's not so great: No Optical drive!
This Laptop PC is very lightweight and is the perfect size for a social media experience. The backlit keyboard is great when I don't want to bother others in the room by turning on extra lights. The extra memory greatly improves download response time. The Webcam provides a clear video experience too. The extra money spent for the laptop is well worth it!

What's great about it: 2.49 lbs!!!!
What's not so great: Keyboard takes some getting used to...
I was looking for a lightweight, yet somewhat powerful, ultrabook. I was tired of carrying a full size laptop at 5.5 lbs. I was debating between this one and the HP Folio. I'm very happy with this laptop. The battery life is excellent - especially if you use the "eco mode." It is fast and I have had no issues running MS Office, etc. WIFI has good range too. Backlit keyboard is a nice feature I have not had before. The screen is somewhat "flimsy" feeling, however I've had no issues with it and I'm sure Toshiba designed it and built it accordingly to withstand damage.

What's great about it: Great price and Easy to use
What's not so great: Nothing at this time
This is a replacement for a net book. Needed something light and compact with more versatility and processing capability than a tablet. Did not want the weight or bulk of a laptop. Needed something light, fast and portable with processing power and outputs other than just a USB. The speed of the SSD drive is awesome and I find the 128G storage is plenty. The backlit keyboard is a great advantage for using in low light and works well in comparison to other comparable ultrabooks. The 3.0 USB is exceptionally fast for using an external 750G storage device for backup, storage of data, pictures etc.
Great deal for under $800.00

What's great about it: lightweight, backlit keyboard, quick start up, great sound&display
What's not so great: constantly loses internet/wifi, keyboard is hard to type with at first, no cd rom drive
People complain about the flimsiness but honestly, I don't have a problem with it. The hinges are only at the middle and the screen is pretty thin so obviously you gotta work with what you have... MOVE THE SCREEN AT THE CENTER, not by the sides so it doesn't twist and break.
I love that it's so lightweight. Easier to carry around campus! It also has a backlit keyboard WHICH is a must! This is great for any college student :)
The fan noise isn't too bad for me, probably because my previous Asus laptop was way louder. I'm probably going to do a BIOS update like what the other reviewer did to get rid of the noise or at least make it quieter.
The display and sound is awesome. I watch netflix movies on this laptop without a problem. The sound is definitely loud enough for me!
What's not so great? Keys... you gotta adjust to this keyboard because you really have to press harder than most or else some of the letters won't type through. Also the internet. I'm not sure if it's the laptop or the software updates or if anyone's having the same problem as me but it keeps losing wifi connection randomly and have to force restart to get it going again (I don't really mind it as much since it does start up SUPER FAST, it's just annoying and inconvenient when I'm in the middle of my work). It doesn't happen with my other devices so it's not my wi-fi for sure.
It is a pretty fragile looking laptop so of course, you have to treat it like it is fragile. I suggest investing in a good laptop case and put that in your backpack to avoid breakage.

What's great about it: Light weight and fast, enough storage space for traveling
What's not so great: Battery life is shorter than claimed, very fragile not good for traveling
Display cracked after one week and Toshiba says it not under warranty. They want over $460 to repair. Crack is hairline 1/8" long and causes horizontial and vertical lines, it must have been there to start and got worse after opening and closing. BUT Toshiba won't stand behind their product!

What's great about it: Very good value
Best, fastest and lightest laptop I've ever owned. Boots up unbelievably quick and wakes from sleep in seconds. 128 Gig SSD drive is adequate but bought a USB 3 portable HD for intensive storage. Very, very good battery life (averaging over 6 hours). Back-lit keyboard is added value for such an inexpensive computer.

What's great about it: Light, good price, turns on quickly
What's not so great: looks fragile
The computer is so light, it's really amazing! However it looks very fragile (especially the screen) so that is why I only put 4 stars. I bought it only a month ago but it's changed my life! It's not a burden anymore to carry my computer in my handbag.
I think it's lighter than a macbook air, but the macbook looks stronger. I think that is the reason for the price difference...

What's great about it: size, weight, speed, spill proof illuminated keyboard
What's not so great: "slow "space key
The Toshiba Protege implements the new Ultrbook standard and is a really light weight travel ready high performance machine. The neat features like a illuminated and water spill proof keyboard (great at night in the airport lounge) is also the only real disadvantage, as it makes the space bar a little slower and heavier to press then my thumb was expecting. So give that aspect a try before you buy. The display is great in bright colour and also usable at Teneriffe in the bright sun at the golf course. As the harddisk is SSD only there are no moving parts and the machine can easily travel beside my clubs in the bag. It also has a hole for a standard Kensington lock in its metal case that makes me feel better if I need to park it in some locker room ....
Toshibas specifc ECO agent also runs nicely and gives me a full work day battery life. USB 3.0 is then used at home to make the daily backup in really short time on external harddisk. a few hours charging and ready to go for the next day... I had an Apple MacBook AIr before and returned it to stock because of poor performance and short battery life. Now I see that this little protege is not only performing to my standards, but seems to be a better eye catcher and more people are asking me for my toy than with the apple....
P.S.: My heritage is German, so dont take the 4 stars above as bad they are great scores, but not yet top of the top of the top ....

What's great about it: ultra light, great performance, plety of ports, good looks and affordable
What's not so great: some bloatware that can be easily removed
I am not going to go over all the technical specs on the laptop, (for that go to toshiba.com) I will make this review simple and tell you exactly what you want/need to hear without all the tech mumbo jumbo.
As an I.T. professional I have owned many laptops throughout my career. This is the first time that I have purchased a laptop and I have absolutely no major complaints.
Here is the breakdown:
This laptop is super light, currently the lightest ultrabook in the market (2.5 pounds) - this make other thin laptops look like an 18th wheeler.
Even though is very light and thin this laptop performs really well. That being said this is NOT a desktop replacement or the ultimate gaming machine. This laptop is designed for moderate/light computing: internet browsing, email, ms office and other regular tasks.
The combination of an intel i3 processor with a Solid State drive (SSD - Hard Drive) and some fast ram makes for a really really really satisfying computing experience. Windows 7 is a completely different experience, is super fast, responsive and snappy. For those worried that the i3 processor is not fast enough you are in luck, the i3 is a 4 core processor (2 physical and 2 virtual) it performs extremely well, especially when combined with a very fast solid state drive.
Just to give you a glimpse of what I am saying, after removing some of the bloatware that Toshiba installed and downloading the latest updates on my laptop, it now boots up in less than 15 seconds and turns off in 4-5 seconds. AMAZING!!! In comparison my work laptop (an i7 with 16 gigs of RAM) takes almost 60 seconds to boot up and almost 25 seconds to shut down. (granted it has more things installed and a regular hard drive)
What else is good?
The screen is super bright and has a really good resolution (720p HD). The keyboard and the track pad are great, very responsive and with a nice sturdy feel. (perhaps a little small if your hands are too big.
Battery life: best in class as well, (5-8 hours) depending on how you use it.
Plenty of ports: HDMI, usb 3.0 (1) , usb 2.0 (2), SD card reader, headphones, mic, VGA, network (no other ultra book has this many ports)
It also has a good camera, a back-lit keyboard, a multi touch track pad, intel wireless display technology, good speakers and a good mic.
And yes, it look sleek and sexy. I took it out at an airport the other day and at least 3 people asked me to see it up close. Personally I feel that it has a very modern and business look. I really like the color, is very unique, similar to the Aston Martin dark greys.
Did I mention that this laptop is $799? Unbelievable.
Is there anything I don't like, well it comes with a lot of bloatware but this is one of the reasons that make this laptop affordable. It can be easily removed and some of the Toshiba software is actually very useful (eco-mode)
If you own this laptop: remove the bloatware that you don't need, download all the updates from Microsoft and Toshiba (use the Service Station), get the Toshiba carrying bag which is very small and matches this laptop really well.
If you have any questions about this laptop, please let me know. This is the next evolution in PC's, is fast, responsive, starts and shuts down quickly, and unlike an ipad it can let do things not only see things.
Thanks

What's great about it: great battery life
What's not so great: Flimsy cover/screen
After just 2 months, the screen cracked as I was opening the laptop. I heard it crack. Flimsy cover. Best Buy wouldn't take it back and we only purchased the hardware warranty. The laptop never left my house and didn't have so much as a scratch on it. Got the run around with Toshiba and now I'm stuck with the computer and the cracked screen; the crack is on the inside of the computer. The screen itself was never damaged. Toshiba wants $325 to replace the screen. I'd rather throw it out the window then pay them a little less than 1/2 of the price of the computer. Next time, I'm buying the MAC.
This product is... flimsy

What's great about it: Light
What's not so great: Flimsy,
The good: portability - it's light. It's fast enough.
The bad: where do I begin? How about how poorly constructed it is? I've owned several computers - from compaq pc back in the day to a solid thinkpad to a macbook pro. This is the FLIMSIEST computer I've EVER had, and that's more galling because it is way more expensive comparable computers that are more durable. It is so flimsy that a fall from one foot made mine unusable. The cheap metal hinges they put at the side will crack very easily and soon SEVER your wireless functionality. When that happens, be prepared for Toshiba to quote you $800 to repair it. And if you can't pay it, they'll charge you $120 for the privilege of quoting you the $800 anyway. Save your money and get a solid computer that doesn't become useless at the slightest slip and fall.
The battery is not as great as they claim anyway.
This product is... A nice compact size
