What's great about it: Organize all your CD's into 8 different groups, and then randomly play the hundreds of tracks from a given group.
What's not so great: Could be a bit more user-friendly when setting up your CD's
This unit is a fantastic way to easily store, label, and play your hundreds (up to 300) of CD's at a touch of a button, all in a manageable size component fitting nicely into your stereo system. I have mine wired directly to my home theater system. This is a perfect jukebox and easily beats ripping and storing each track onto a computer. Each CD can be labelled (either by the machine or by a keyboard, which I used) and easily assigned to one of eight music style groups (jazz, classical, male singers, etc - you make up your own names). Then, when you want to play a CD, simply dial the CD (either by group or by name) and hit play. A great feature which I use at get-togethers, is to choose a music style group (for example, Solo Piano) and set the unit to random shuffle all discs. It will proceed to randomly choose a CD from that group and then randomly choose a track from the CD and play it. This continues all night so you always get a different track which produces a nice variety of music from the same style all night!!

What's great about it: CD Storage
What's not so great: Flimsy design
Many of my friends were impressed by this unit -- no believes it can hold 300 CDs. The trickiest part is loading the CDs. They kind of just float on the carousel. If you label your CDs as you enter them, you will have a hard time remembering exactly where they are. You have to spend a lot of time organizing and grouping CDs in order to find exactly what song on what CD you want. I just wanted a convenient way to store and play my CDs; if I want a particular song I have an i-POD to handle that function.

What's great about it: Capacity/Price
What's not so great: No PC interface to aid control/programming
Replaced old Denon 5 CD changer (kaput after 10 years). Allows CDs to be grouped as well as custom programs (3). Memo feature very handy. External keyboard interface slow but better than using the hardware/wand interface to input memos. Wish it had a USB interface for external command/control. I can't find the old PC program that interfaces to the Sony units (Sony are you listening). This is a big unit. Physically almost 3x the size of the old Denon, cost less and holds 60x CDs. More features if you need them. Will have to see how the mechanical parts hold up. Bought the extended warrenty. If you only want to put a CD in and play it, this might not be the unit for you. Inserting/removing a CD requires good hand/eye coordination. Overall a good value.

What's great about it: Ease of access to whole library of CDs
What's not so great: Reliability, price
We really enjoyed being able to access almost all of our CD collection without having to load and unload. Some of the features required an old-style keyboard plugged in. However, the device malfunctioned after about a year and is now useless. I expect more from a device with the Sony name. I would not buy this item again.

What's great about it: The S-Link & available PC controlled system.
What's not so great: Can't think of anything.
I've owned Sony Megachangers since 1998, this particular changer since 2004. I've never had a problem with skipping, scratches or most anything else described in some of these posts. I love these units, as I currently have 4 different models in my system, which are connected to an S-LinkE. The SLINKE provides connectivity from the changers to a PC, which contains a database to control the entire system. With this system, you can forget about the 8 program or group modes, you don't need them. Create playlists, keep track of what's been played, etc. all from the PC. The S-Link connection on the back of the players makes this possible, which is exclusive to Sony equipment. I'll never burn my CDs to a hard drive, why would I? My system is the best of both worlds.

What's great about it: Nothing
What's not so great: Scratches cds and sony will not stand behind it after warrenty expires
The cdp-cx355 300 disk player will destroy your cds if used on random for a long time. All of my disks started to skip after I had it for 14 months. Sony would not stand behind it because the warranty had expired. The disk develop small ark like circles around the edge of the cd over time and this leads to skipping and reading problems. I have called sony 3 times and talked to all types of people and they refuse to both fix the player for free and to compensate for the damaged cd's. I will never buy a sony product again.

What's great about it: Programming groups so shuffle among all CDs in group.
What's not so great: Skipped a few times on different CDs
My fault for not measuring how deep the unit is--deeper than most other components. Measure your cabinet depth first or be prepared to get out the saw like I did. Sound quality is great although I have had a few skips on CDs that have never skipped before. Took a bit to figure out the group naming and assignment protocol but once you get into it, it works fine. It swallowed up nearly all my CDs and it is like having your own juke box or Musaq playing random cuts from CDs within a select group. Might have liked to have more than 8 group options as I had to include several types of music in a couple groups. Some SONY remotes will control aspects of this unit's operation. Overall, I am thrilled with the unit and would recommend it. Have been using it a couple of weeks now.

What's great about it: so far so good no problems
What's not so great: n/a
This works very well so far . I had read prior reviews first. Worried about the skipping problem so i did clean all cds first . Plays regular store bought and homemade cds. have about 90 cds in order .No apparent balancing problems that i read about. Did have to make play list so i would know where each cd is located. (ex) linkin park. cd slot # 53. Lot of cds to remember in which slot

I have owned and enjoyed impressing all that witness the original CDPCX300 since 1999 now after 11 years of service it finally gave up--- I WILL replace it with the updated model. What's not so great: Could of been a bit smaller lenth wise
I read enough reviews to be wary of this item because many of the posting weren't very encouraging. However, I've never been disappointed with Sony so I took the chance anyway. I'm glade I did to, because this CD player is incredible. How they manage to sell it for only around 200 bucks is a mystery to me. It's worth far far more. Neither my Yamaha or my Pioneer players can compete with this Sony. Buy it. Hey, anything Sony puts there Logo on is guaranteed.

What's great about it: Holds all my Cds
What's not so great: Ate one of them and skips while playing
I purchased one and it kept indicating the next CD to be played was number 38, I took it back and got a refund after Sony told me that the chips on the main board might be bad,
I thought I would give it a second try only to have it eat a CD while it was unloading it to go to the next CD. It also skips on multiple cd's. I put these CDs in my old CD player and no skipping..........
I am going to purchase that Acer computer with HDMI out, its only $199.99 and use iTunes to store all my CDs on it. I will then run the HDMI cable to my Yamaha AV receiver.

What's great about it: I'm giving it away
What's not so great: It really doesn't work very well.
First the carousel has to be filled in a fussy way or it will weight too much on one side, and jam We have many varied discs. The ones we made ourselves get jammed, the most, In fact it's a jam disaster. We hate this player. It has ruined enough CD's, for us. I am giving it to an old age home that will use it to play ONE disc at a time and NOT store any in it.
It's too bad, it seems so cool ... until you own

What's great about it: Storage Capacity
What's not so great: Inputting titles is slow even with the keyboard.
I've had my Sony for four years and didn't run into any problems until Oct 3, 2009. It simply wouldn't play CDs anymore. Thinking I was going to have to replace it, I started reading these reviews and got worried. I took the player out of my system and was planning to remove the top cover. While checking for screws underneath the system, I dumped a bunch of CDs inside the machine. Rather than plugging the thing in to remove them (because it ALWAYS spins the carousel on power-up), I simply removed them manually after taking off the cover. I found that one CD had gotten re-inserted backwards at some point in the past and apparently one had double slotted. Once I got to the point where there was only one CD in the player, I powered up to see what was happening. It spun up and then played just fine. I replaced the rest of my CDs, hooked it back into my system, and everything works like new.
I'd suggest to those who've ended up with broken CDs that someone probably moved the thing (to dust under it or whatever) and dumped a disc or discs and didn't tell you. Obviously, powering up the player when CDs are outside of the carousel would ruin them and create a domino effect. If in doubt, unplug it, remove the cover, remove all the CDs but one. power up, play a single CD, reload your CDs, and enjoy.
It would be nice if there were plastic guides all around the carousel to keep the CDs from rolling out, but there isn't.
