What's not so great: as given
I thought this would be a good product. With the firmware that was factory installed I could access everything that the product should have been able access except Youtube. I contacted the manufacturer. After 10 emails, they told me I needed to update the firmware, which I had already done on the first install. After another 3 emails, I sent pictures of the screen showing that there was no Youtube because a newer version of Flash was required. Avermedia sent a link to the global page that contained a newer version of the firmware - 1.15.40.18. I dutifully upgraded the firmware - again.
With the new firmware, I was able to connect to you tube and play the Flash files, but I lost connectivity with my Iomega Iconnect NAS server. The new firmware would not traverse a directory and would only give an error message of no playable files. Versions 1.11.09.18, 1.15.11.18, and 1.11.34.18 will all traverse a NAS directory but 1.11.40.18 will not. 1.11.40.18 also does not recognize MP4 or h.264 encoded videos.
I have made numerous requests for the firmware source code so that I can fix the problems myself. Avermedia refuses to supply the source code even though the source is Linux based and GPL'd.
I feel that I threw away 86 dollars. I will never purchase another Avermedia product, I recommend that others look elsewhere rather than purchase an Avermedia product.
