What's great about it: Extremely user-configurable and fantastic design
What's not so great: Only thing is the price, but quailty costs $$$
If you're considering purchasing this camera then presumably you're a pro or an advanced amateur and you already know what to expect. Well, this camera is a complete success by almost any metric. While I was mightily impressed with the D3s, I chose to "upgrade" to the D4 not so much because of image quality (the improvement is slight) but rather because of autofocus system and ergonomic improvements that fit my style of shooting. The D4 is a much easier tool to use vertically (especially given the new dedicated focus selection spot joystick and the thumb grip, as well as the separately memorized focus points for horizontal vs. vertical shooting). To me the D4 represents an evolutionary rather than revolutionary step over the D3S (though the D4 is revolutionary compared to the orginal D3), but at least with respect to ergonomics and user-friendly design the improvements are significant enough to justify the expense.

What's great about it: Easy to use, Great low-light performance, Great video qualtity
What's not so great: Pretty expensive
I will keep this review short. This is a flagship Nikon camera that is designed to capture a moment-in-time in any light condition. Nikon took an already-amazing D3S and added many great features. Now to list a few:
+ First and foremost, great low-light performance. The performance is comparable to D3S, but when one takes into account that this is a 16MP sensor - pretty amazing. Very usable photographs at 12,800 ISO. In fact with some NR one can salvage 50k ISO as well. Beyond that, the100k and 200k ISO are mostly a marketing fluff and the images are not usable.
+ Improved autofocus system. I found that D4 is able to lock in much faster and accurately (especially in low-light).
+ Improved metering system. I found that the exposure is consistently better and I find myself using exposure compensation less and less. Of course for high contrast scenes EC is still a must.
+ Improved handling. The body, the backlit buttons, the grip, the focus selector switch, the screen - all improved. The camera fits like a glove in your hand and balances very well with just about any lens.
+ While video was not the primary reason for me buying this camera, I find it's video abilities pretty powerful and a definite upgrade over D3S (having rented it before). Nikon has always been known for delivering great low-light cameras, but lacked in the video department when compared to Canon. As far as I am concerned, this is no longer the case.
+ Uncompressed video out
+ Ability to use quiet shutter and silent shutter modes (but only in LiveView).
+ Very high FPS (a small improvement over D3S)
+ built-in ethernet port for tethered shooting.
+ tons of other improvements, but above were the key for me.
Cons:
- Two different memory cards. One CompactFlash and one XQD. XQD is a great card, but now I need two readers and a new set of cards .
- More expensive spare battery (I suppose compared to the cost of the camera the cost in negligible) .
- Pretty expensive camera. While I do think this camera is worth the money (and is cheaper than Canon 1DX alternative), at the end of the day $6,000 is a price of a used car and you definitely feel it.
Overall, an amazing machine/camera/computer that can shoot in low-light conditions very well, able to shoot at crazy FPS, delivers full HD video performance with HDMI out, has a very well designed and ergonomic body, better focusing, and better metering.
If I had D3S I would probably not upgrade (unless video was important to me), but since I had D700 the upgrade was definitely worth it.

What's not so great: price!
The top of the line professional workhorse camera from Nikon. So packed with features, I haven't yet had time to learn half of them after one month! Probably the last DSLR I will every buy.

The personal imaging revolution is upon us. If you are someone looking for an excellent, full-frame DSLR, the D4 is very, very good. Nikon is correct in calling their D4 digital single lens reflex camera a “total professional imaging machine”. The new flagship DSLR features a 16.2 megapixel full-frame sensor with an ISO range of 100 to 12,800, expandable to an eye opening 204,800. Ranges like that are enough to shoot in near complete darkness. Extra improvements over the prior model include 10 frames per second shooting, a 91,000-Pixel RGB 3D Color Matrix Metering III sensor to deliver even more accurate colors and exposure, and an improved 51 point AF (auto focus) system. The Nikon D4, which is a digital SLR camera, is perfect for someone who likes shooting fast and remarkably sharp images; however, I wish you luck in finding one, Amazon sold through its pre-order allotment in less than an hour.
The new LCD screen is gorgeous. 3.2” diagonal with a 170° viewing angle, it’s possibly the best quality LCD screen ever put on a DSLR. Its rotating ability allows me to be more creative with angles and depth of field. In fact, many options on the camera allow me to be as imaginative as I want when shooting. The on screen menus are stress-free, easy to understand and simple to navigate through. “Live View” is an excellent way to make on the spot concise focus confirmation, if you’ve never used a DSLR with live view, you’ll love it. The only negative of this feature is that it can really drain your battery and can only be used for a certain amount of time before the imager circuitry heats up, which will add noise to your pictures. I did order the camera with the optional Tg-bgd40 battery grip. This accessory makes the camera taller and rugged which in the end makes it easier to hold. The grip also lets you use 2 Nikon lithium batteries or 6- AA alkaline at the same time as you use the camera’s battery. In my experience it has increased battery life by 10-15 hours depending on whether I shoot in JPEG or RAW. All in all, it's a very valuable accessory to consider.
The auto-exposure system seems very accurate. Amazing auto focus features like 51 AF points, an AF mode selector switch, and fast AF point selection, ensure accurate, fast shooting whether the subject you are shooting is a room full of children or a high-speed sporting event. Speed is such a crucial element with photography so having a camera that can keep up is a blessing. Missing shots to metering issues or focus glitches is now a thing of the past.
The biggest single problem exists in the video mode so it doesn’t bother me too much. In the HD video mode you have no control over ISO settings and shutter speed. These settings are essential in creating perfect exposure for your image, avoiding shots that are too dark/bright. There's an exposure lock button that will lock the exposure variables to whatever the LCD displays at the time you press the button but there are no on-screen indicators that show the settings that the camera has chosen for you. Basically, you move the camera around in the scene and let the brightness drift up and down. When you see what you think is a good exposure on the LCD screen, you press the lock button. Since the exposure lock resets after each scene or take, chances are you won't have consistent exposures over multiple takes of a particular scene.
The Nikon D4 is an excellent still camera and in my opinion, money well spent. All cameras at any price level have positives and negatives. I've never found or used the "perfect" camera. What seemed like a hopeless, unattainable expense when I first started shooting five years ago turned into a reality after I spent time printing (or developing) and making my money off my prints. A well-earned upgrade from the D3S and it was worth the wait and the price! It is an excellent glimpse into the future of "hybrid" still & video DSLR cameras.
