What's great about it: Everything & Lisa Hannigan
What's not so great: Nothing
While Damien Rice is an amazing musician in himself, what really won me over with this album is Lisa Hannigan. I literally have no words to describe her voice. Literally, I can't think of any that seem fitting. Maybe delicate, maybe soft, maybe honest, but if none of those then the least I can say is it is beautiful.
But, of course I can't just gush about Lisa because it is a Damien Rice record, and he deserves to be gushed about as well. I first got a taste of him from the film "Closer" which of course made his song "The Blowers Daughter" quite popular. After that, I was hooked. My favourite tracks off this album are definetly "Cold Water," which is a beautiful and sad song with a ton of emotion, and 'I Remember," a song that you will no longer recognize by the end of it. It starts with Lisa's soft voice, solo, and then about 3 minutes in Damien starts in with a heavier voice and then later even heavier music. It's absolutely astounding and I'm getting shivers just talking about it.
This is definetly an album you won't forget about.

For this CD! This is a really stripped down album. There's not a bunch of fancy recording tricks, 62 tracks of backing noise, or thousands of session players. There's Damien. His Guitar. Backing vocals on some tracks by a delightful girl named Lisa Hannigan (she no longer plays with Damien Rice) a bit of cello, and the occasional drumset. The songs are raw, rough, and sometimes he misses a note or two. But the end product is a very real recording of some very powerful songs. If you've seen the movie "Closer" you'll recognize quite a few of the songs on this cd, as they used much of the instrumental passages in that movie's score. This is overall a pretty sad themed record, but I seem to always be in the mood to listen to it. And if I'm not, by the time Damien sings the chorus of the first song, I am.
