What's great about it: Everything
What's not so great: Nothing negative so far
Used primarily for Wildlife / Sports photography, with great results on an EOS 50D. Tried experiment indoor shots of family cat sitting in window lighting, shot at 400mm, F5.6 at 1/30 second shutter speed with IS on, image was very sharp. Outdoor shots are tack sharp at all F stops that I've tried so far, all F5.6 to F11. I could not come up with a negative comment on this lens if I tried. Great Lens in every aspect. Some complain about the weight, you get very used to it quickly, about as long as it takes to see the kinds of images you are getting. Not an issue. Yes, some of the primes can be sharper, but not necessarily, you would loose a lot of versatility.

What's great about it: Sharpness
What's not so great: Cost
I'm using this on a 5D2 and anything above f/8 is so sharp it will cut you. You can handhold the lens, but it is better used on a tripod or monopod. The pump action of the zoom takes very little time to get familiar with it.
Excellent lens

What's great about it: Picture quality, incredible zoom
What's not so great: Poor pics in low light, heavy
This lens takes some getting used to as it's a push/pull design but once you master that it is great. It works well in outdoor settings. I take tons of pics of my kids sporting events and I find that I delete much less now than I did before with a non L series lens. Built like a tank and great picture quality!
That being said I have been disappointed with the indoor picture quality. It is just not well suited for low light conditions.
Make sure you buy a tripod or monopod.

What's great about it: Sharp images, Very, Very close up's.
What's not so great: Price, Minimum F stop.
I'm not a pro but I feel like one with this lens. It truly is amazing what you can capture with this lens. So sharp, quick focus and very quiet. Yes, the price is hard to swallow but with Best Buy's 18 month financing with 0% interest makes it much easier to handle. You get what you pay for. Ive had this lens for several months now and really has inspired me to get out and capture the moment. Shooting my friends HS sons before they make it big. Capturing birds in flight. Jet fighters in air. My pics of the full moon are amazing. Looking forward to upcoming NASCAR event here in Phoenix. My friends will be wanting all my photo's. Is it the perfect lens for all situations. No. But, If you want close up's from afar this is you best choice in my opinion. Again. NOT a pro. The minimum F stop is an issue in low light. But my use will mostly be in daylight situations. Happy Shooting..

What's great about it: zoom range. L lens.
What's not so great: Push, pull zoom. Maybe f 5.6 at max zoom.
This is the first lens I got with my Canon 30D and now I use it on my 7D.
For wildlife photography the reach of a 400mm is twice that of the 70-200 zoom. 400mm is 640mm with a smaller sensor - smaller sensor is like having a 1.6x tele converter.
IS is great. Can use it at one or two exposure steps slower - 1/125 maybe 1/60 instead of 1/250. (rule of thumb: 1 over focal length is exposure time)
The loss of 2 stops - 5.6 vs 2.8 might be an issue but most cameras can compensate for this with a higher ISO. And you can compensate for the grain.
Push pull zoom does cause balance issues on a tripod.
