What's great about it: Kratos is so memorable and quotable, the combat and controls are great, and the variety is wonderful! What's not so great: no healing portable item/magic and the there are cheap spots
"The plot and the lead character are so memorable and have a wonderful off-beat humor that always makes me laugh. I won't spoil anything, but it fits with the plot and will entertain most people. The adult nature of this game also makes this stand out, in a very refreshing way. Even combat complements the plot and the characters featuring his brutal combat techniques and attitude towards others.
One of my favorite parts of this game is the combat. You have a ranged melee attack, close melee attack, and a grapple attack which opens up a world of options for the player. This is comparable to games like Devil May Cry where you can attack from a distance with your guns, but it will take you much longer and feels tacked on at times. God of War keeps the combat feeling balanced and reasonable, whether you grapple your enemies to the ground or slice them from a far, it still feels like you are the same character and you can change from one to another without missing a beat. This also translates to battles on walls and on ropes.
Speaking of the different places you fight, there is a wide array of venues to fight in and many different puzzles that will challenge you a little, but not enough to disrupt the action. There are also situations where you must kill enemies in a certain way, area, or timeframe.
There is one issue you should know about which is very odd, you cannot carry anything to heal your wounds. You get some healing orbs when you kill enemies, but if you do not plan well there may be situations you will find especially difficult. This may be an issue with way you should see Kratos, since he is fueled by combat, literally. It is not terrible, but a surprise to must people who expect an inventory. There are power-ups you can get, collecting six eyes will give your heath bar's size an increase, collecting six feathers will do the same to your magic bar and there is a rage meter that fills as you kill bad guys that, when used, will allow you to do more damage. There is also a way to invest your experience into one weapon or spell, which is also good, so it isn't as shallow as it may sound.
The worst parts of the game are the few cheap points. One will come early on where you must escort a box which cannot get shot with too many arrows, another is much later where you must walk a series of beams without being cut and falling to your death, the last is the final boss fight which is very different from your other fights. But those moments are short and easy to forgive for such a memorable title.
I would suggest everyone pick this game up, it is very enjoyable and a true legend in the genera. There are also several sequels which are also worth playing, but pick this one up first so you can enjoy all of the references to the first one."

What's great about it: Graphics, Weapon Heirarchy, Special Abilities are fun... What's not so great: The Final Battle...
"After a long run in strategy games and RPGs, I decided to give another third person game a chance. Luckily, I found a great one with God of War. + There are several elements that make it a great game. There are multiple fighting moves that can be unlocked, as well as abilities. The abilities are kind of fun to use, not the most inventive ones that I've ever seen, but neat none-the-less. + There is a fairly new feature that is integrated into this game in the battle system that I found rather smart. At certain times, one will have to input specific button combinations in a short amount of time to achieve a successful blow to certain enemies. It adds a refreshing new breath to action gaming. + The boss battles on this game are at times reminiscent of the old Legacy of Kain series; they have interesting ways that must be concocted in order to succeed. + The biggest disappointment to me about this game was the final battle. I won't spoil it with who the boss is, but it's probably the easiest, most graphically deprived portion of the whole scenario. + In the end, this game has a fairly low replay value, but it is one heck of a ride the first time through."

What's great about it: Engaging storyline, wonderful control layout, outstanding graphics for a PS2 game What's not so great: What? Cons? Don't think so!
"WOW! This game knocks the socks off anything I've played for the PS2. (Granted I was playing it on a PS3.)
If you like anything about Greek mythology or just a good 'ol slice and dice game I highly recommend God of War. With 4 different levels of difficultly (you need to beat the game on one of the lower three levels to unlock "God" mode) this game goes from a challenge for a first time game player all the way to a challenge for some of the elite gamers.
This game was considered "Game of the Year" (for 2005) by many gamer magazines and web sites. I will just say I agree!"

"This is one of the greatest games ever. Ever since the day I picked it up from the store, I've beat the game quite a few times. But still, every time it feels like a brand new game to me...the story line is awesome. The player would really feel like Kratos himself while playing the game. It has almost all the characters from the Greek mythology and its really an adventure living the life of Kratos. The controls are excellent, though the camera could've been better at times. The boss fights are awesome...This is a journey that should be taken by all gamers who like action and adventure games...I would highly recommend it."

"I am a rather late bloomer to the PS2 club. I just bought this game about 2 months ago and have enjoyed every minute of playing it. The Greek mythology angle is very nice, the combos and fighting style is superb, and the storyline is among the best I have ever played. Be aware, however, that this is a game for adults. There is massive amounts of gore and a lot of nudity in this game. If that doesn't bother you, than play it. You will not be disappointed."

"This game was my first great adventure game and before I even had a PS2 I wanted to play this game due to a game demo my friend received ages before I saw it resurface. By the time I finally had a PS2 I got God of War for a great deal, only $19.99. This title is a must have for anyone with a PS2 or PS3, it's that good. I would say that the game is lacking because it has no multiplayer and has no replay value but that truth is that this game is just great."
