Doesn't work with X-Box 360   01/29/2010
By Anonymous from Seattle

What's not so great: Doesn't work with X-Box 360

"Bought this because we needed a new router. Works fine except it refuses to play well with our X-Box 360. We have our 360 hard wired and yet every time we go to watch a movie stored on our PC using the 360 it refuses to recognize the PC and we have go through the whole set up process all over again. Never had this problem with our old router.

Also the wireless connection isn't that great. They claim 108mbps yet connections seem slower than on our old 54mbps router.

What's great about it: Nothing
What's not so great: Support, Ease of install, No connectivity to my PS3

"First off the router would not connect to the internet, so I called tech. support. The person would not put the script down and listen to the problem. She had such a heavy accent I could not understand her and she gave me wrong info. and argued with me telling me she didnt. After an hour wasted with the first tech. I tried again an hour later after I calmed down and got another tech. She fixed the problem but it will not work with my PS3 which is the main reason I bought the router to begin with. The set up disc is worthless I had to enter everything manually."

What's great about it: It is not a Linksys, so it works great!
What's not so great: Flashing UFO blue light, but easy on/off button.

"I have had this model going on 3 years and have had absolutely zero problems. I do not understand some of the other reviews, could be faulty wiring or bad grounds. I personally install routers for a living and even the cheap Net Gears work great, but I recommend this one.
Do not let the other reviews get to you. There could be a bad apple in the bunch from time to time, but not likely twice in a row. I moved away from Linksys years ago because of the constant lock-ups and resets (we were buying several a week and our customers were very displeased on a grand scale). This problem still persists with the new design (checked it). The Cisco name means nothing when on a Linksys product. The Cisco name alone is the ultimate in technology and rather pricey (but worth it). Generally used for companies.
So what if you forget your password for your secured wireless. Just log in to the IP address on the bottom of the router, put in the username and password, and reset it. If it was secured, someone did this to begin with. Just make sure the computer is directly plugged into the router for access. I unplugged mine about 3 times in 3 years and every time it was the modem's fault.
We run 4-6 computers at a time in my house (2 wired), and have no problems. This router will run at a 108 bps if it is paired with the Range Max wireless pci card. I have one in my son's old laptop and it still runs faster than my new one. This is true for any router out there that claims to do higher speeds, as long as the equipment on both ends are the same.
I strictly use mine for wireless. I have never ran it directly as a modem because I already have a cable modem doing that job already. I do have Vista on one of the computers and it never has a problem (32 bit). Could not readily verify any problems with Vista 64 bit or Windows 7, but I have heard that others find a easy work around. I that this helps some people out there. When this router is used just as an access point (AP), it works flawlessly. And the price is $20 cheaper now than when I bought it. (Any people out there still on dial-up, do not expect wonders from any company).

What's great about it: Design and Security Features
What's not so great: Wireless Range

"The router itself is not so easy to install once you know that the modem needs to be in bridge mode. However, to get there I had to call a geek friend. Then, the process should not take more than 25 min.
After dealing with both your modem and router you are ready to experience a considerable increase in speed and range up to 10 times...
It is a lie, it didn't enhance the range already reached by my wireless modem and the speed is the same... it only helped a little when more than 3 computers were connected to the internet.
I would not have bought this product if I would have known before it's performance.

What's not so great: You name it

"What am I? Bill Gates? This thing is impossible! Right from the get-go, won't work with Vista. Of course it won't, Vista is only as common as dirt these days and because ours is 64 bit and this thing requires 32 bit, we are out of luck. If I were a computer genius or a member of the "Geek Squad", no problem. . When someone make something that is truly "user friendly", they'll literally make billions. In the meantime, back it goes."

What's great about it: Good range ... when it connects.
What's not so great: Will not automatically connect to iPod or other wireless devices

"I have purchased 3 of these routers. One for a friend's home, one for my parents home, and one for my home. 1 out of 3 routers work with my iPod, Playstation and Wii.

I have spent many hours on the phone with customer support attempting to set up the routers. Unfortunately after a certain period of time you cannot get customer support unless you pay more money. This is aggravating when they tell you they can help you, but only if you write them a check.

I attempted to go through Apple customer support and they were unable to help me connect to the iPod. Apple told me they get a lot of calls from Netgear customers and some routers will not work.

I would recommend avoiding the headache and purchasing a different brand.

Have had no trouble at all   12/15/2009

What's great about it: Simplistic setup and then never touch it again
What's not so great: The lights are a bit much but can be shut off

"Have had this for about a year and a half. Have hand no trouble at all. Setup through the wizard was easy and quick. All computers in the house found it instantly and I have literally never touched it again except to turn the lights off and wipe the dust off. Also run a wireless Panasonic camera through it. Range around the house and back yard is excellent. Simply flawless! Couldn't be happier. Have recommended this one to friends and haven't had a single person come back and tell me they couldn't make it work."

What's great about it: price
What's not so great: Keeps Disconnecting Windows 7 firmware difficult to locate

"This router was recommended to me by a salesperon at BB. Found it difficult to install. CD said that it can't do it on Window s 7. Found compatible firmware at routerlogin.net. Difficult signing on. Don't sign up for password just use default login info of "admin" and "password". Seems like the firmware needs some patchwork. Overall not happy. Connection fades in and out constantly. Customer service was terrible until I finally got to speak to a human being in India (2 DAYS INTO THE PROCESS). Put on hold, cut off, left messages, sent email, 0 response. I will never buy another Netgear Product due to their lack of customer service."

What's great about it: Better range than standard g
What's not so great: Setup instructions did not work for XP system, stops working for no reason

"Range is good. Getting much better signal on other floors of house than with standard G router. Tried setting this up using a computer running XP. The enclosed instructions did not work at all with XP, requiring I contact technical assistance so they could talk me through some web-based set-up assistant. Also it just stops working from time to time. We end up with no access in the house even though the status lights on the router and modem (cable) all read "green." Only thing that get's our internet running again is unplugging the power from the back of the router for about 30 seconds then plugging it back in. Had better luck with our old Netgear standard G router, which was around 4 years old and just stopped working. Will likely return this product for another brand."

"I've set up routers before but this one came with the clearest instructiuons - almost too simple, It was quick to go through with illistrated steps. It worked perfectly, performing at the speeds promised. In my condo in the middle of the loop, other people were complaining about problems with the signal throughout the unit. I don't know what brand router they have, but I have about 1200 Sq. Ft. and I did experience a signal problem anywhere in my unit."

What's great about it: Ease for a simple person
What's not so great: n/a

"I replaced my Linksys with this unit hoping it would overcome some of the wireless dead spots I have in my house. There was literally no difference whatsoever in terms of it's range. It's odd that they actually call it RangeMax...more hype than performance there from what I can tell. Were this unit to actually have external antennaes I could have added a more powerful one and maybe fixed my problem. I was going to take it back, but I do like the fact it takes up less room standing upright than my old one did, so I kept it.

It has one feature that I haven't used yet, but probably will to fix my range problem. The unit can be paired with another unit to make the second unit into a wireless range extender. What this means is I can get a second unit, place it somewhere in the house before the dead spots, and it will effectively route all wireless signals to the main unit...basically solving my dead spot problem. To be honest, I haven't done this yet, but probably will in another week or so.

If you live in a place that is either very large and you tend to lose your signal, or that has quite a few walls/floors the signal has to move through, this can be a pretty good answer for that if youi're willing to buy two of these units rather than just one."

What's great about it: Good signal, awesome customer service
What's not so great: Nothing so far

"I recently purchased a laptop to replace the desktop computers I had. I am totally clueless when it comes to anything wireless. (I had my last wireless connection set up by a professional.) I purchased the Netgear router to hook up to the cable modem and was told that the CD that came with the router would let me know how to set everything up where I could get the internet on my laptop. Well, I put the CD in and wasn't getting anywhere so I called customer service, got a representative right away and he had me online on my laptop in 15-20 minutes without even having to use the CD. He was very patient with my total lack of knowledge and made everything easy for me to understand. Based on this experience, I would definitely purchase another Netgear product."

What's great about it: Range (when modified. explanation below), pretty blue light show, speed
What's not so great: installation cd, default range, flash memory

"this router is almost everything you could ask for in a router. its fast, and has range that is on par with 802.11G+. I found a way to truly amplify the power of the routers 7 antennas without any firmware hacks (there are not any for this model just so you know). i increased the range through my apartment building by 4x. its very simple, since you cannot aim the antennas (they are internal) it doesnt matter the direction the router faces, so if you put a tin foil "satalite dish" on the outside of the router. you will not believe the directional results.

the only hiccup i had with this router was the installation. if the cd detects any problems durring setup, there is no go back button. you must restart the entire process and close the current installation. other than that, this is a great router

What's great about it: reliable, simpe, flexable
What's not so great: a bit large

"Because I have used this router for a few years I'll give you a long-term review of it. This router has been the absolute best model I have ever used. It has been a reliable piece of equipment over a period of YEARS. I have decent performance, bittorrent wont make it throw tantrums, the interface is very straightforward and I've never had a dropped connection,. Setup was simple. It offers great wireless security, allowing up to WPA2. The internal antennas mean there are fewer things to break on it, and the annoyingly bright blue lights on the top of it can be turned off with a switch in the back. I have used this with PCs, Macs, and an iPod touch without any issues. I put as the negative that its a bit large for a simple router, but at 9 by 6 inches, it's hardly enormous."
