"My Netgear is 3 weeks old. I purchased it for two main reasons. The SPI (stateful packet inspection) feature and the logging feature... where it automatically logs all web sites visited by the computers on the network (my kids) . It also sends logs to a designated email address. This allows me to review what website they went to. I could have easily used the site blocking feature on the router, but chose not to. The router is extremely easy to set up. Even mac address filtering was very simple. The wireless signal was very strong, allowing my laptop to work from my neighbor's patio. The router worked for about 6 days straight without incident. Then, every day when I would arrive home from work, the router had crashed, and my family would not have internet access while I was at work. Every time, a simply unplug of power, wait 30 seconds and plug power back in and router was fine for the evening. This happened for about 10 days straight. To insure it was the router and not my cable modem, I removed the Netgear and installed my old Belkin router, and it work flawlessly for the next four days. The Belkin did not offer the logging and site blocking features the Netgear offered. I re-installed the Netgear and again, every day it crashed and everyday I had to reboot it when arriving home. Emails to their overseas tech support brought solution suggestions that did not address the issues I had enetered on their support website. They finally said to call their tech support. I called. Three straight evenings of try this and that, then try downloading new firmware then reset default values.. Hours of my time, but nothing would work. They finally said to RMA it... but at my shipping expense and a total delay of over two weeks without the product.. or, I could pay 16.95 for expedited service for a product that did not work. I refused to pay expedited shipping when their product was at fault. Had they paid I would have used the RMA. Instead, back to the big box store it goes. I have had other Netgear routers twice before many years ago. Their products, I felt, used to be superior. Now their product quality and overseas tech support is abysmal. I assure you...its replacement will no longer bear the Netgear name."

Pros: Extremely fast data transmission, no dropped wireless signals, known brand, very easy to install Cons: Doesn't have a place to install an antenna signal booster
"I have DSL and prior to this router, I had a combined router/modem that would constantly drop my wireless signals and crash. Finally it burned out so I did some research and found a modem that was supposedly compatible with a router by one of the companies that competes with Netgear. I tried for three days to set up a network and it would not work. Finally, I gave up and took the other router back to Best Buy. The people at the customer service desk were so nice; they gave me a credit towards the purchase of a different router. I decided to go with the Netgear RangeMax 802.11g Wireless Router and boy am I glad I did. It is well worth the extra money as it is a little pricier. The signal strength is extremely strong and I'm able to use my laptops from the other end of my house as well as outside. Also, this router can handle multiple devices at once at high speeds without freezing up. I have one desktop computer and three laptops and have had no issues. The thing I like most though was the ease of setup. All I had to do was pop in the disc it came with and it did the rest; it detected my internet, set up all my encryption keys, etc. Best router I have ever had and would definitely buy again."

Pros: Easy to configure and setup Cons: Parental Controls feature disabled
"This router is easy to configure and setup. I performed the setup manually (without any automated wizard config) because I've had extensive experience with networking. Performance has been very good with numerouse devices configured (laptop, PC, XBOX360, PDA, and printer). I was disappointed however, that the parental control feature (which required a extra fee anyway) was disabled and no longer supported."

Pros: Price Cons: died after 60 days
"I went looking for a new wireless router and was looking at an N router after about 45 minutes of standing around waiting for some help I was finally talked into this router...
the nice part was that I took it home plugged it in and it worked without any setup ( vista ultimate 64 )
works through out the house. in the basement out by the pool and upstairs...
everything was going great till in the middle of running reports this evening the thing just died.. I mean literally died.... finally had to take my entire network down and plug my modem in to my PC direct.....
what a pain.....
will be returning tomorrow, and will be getting that N router after all"

Pros: Looks cool Cons: Really buggy
"I'm not sure how anyone could rate this router highly. Setup is relatively easy. After configuring the router using the wizard, upgrading the firmware to the latest os, and setting up security to match my old 802.11b Netgear wireless router I noticed that my WiFi connection reset every 45-60 seconds. Knowledge base gave a few suggestions including changing the channels (tried all 11) and setting the mtu size to 1400 on your wifi card. Nothing I tried work. After tinkering with the bad boy for a while I decided I'd hookup my old Netgear wireless router (which actually works) and return this one to BestBuy."

Pretty good router, good price, awesome design

Pros: Good range, fast connection, loved the option of turning the LED lights off Cons: Installation was a bit complicated, had trouble getting my macbook to work with, drops connection sometimes
"I purchased this router because I loved it's sleek design and an employee from BB told me it was the best for it's price range. Plus I have a Netgear Rangemax PCI card so I figured, why not max out my wireless internet by buying this router? The router is in my basement, and I'm only getting 4/5 bars, even though the router is right below me.
And I had some trouble getting my macbook to connect to the router. It was connected, I got perfect signal, however I just could not access the internet. I finally reset the router to factory settings, disabled MAC filtering and voila, macbook got internet.
I've also had some problems with it's connection. At first when I purchased it, whenever I configured the router, I would lose connection and I would have to reset it and that got annoying. However, that is long gone and I haven't had to reset in a long time.
Even though it all seems like cons that I'm mentioning, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised with it's range. I get connection all throughout my house and even outside. In my front porch, at the far end of my backyard, and even a faint signal from my neighbor's house.
Even though there have been times when I was on the verge of returning this product and purchasing a Linksys router, I'm glad I stuck with it. It's working great and I totally recommend it."

Dude, Buy This Router!!!!!
08/05/2008
By halospartanfrom Cary, North Carolina
Pros: Strong signal, price Cons: setup
"I bought this router friday when I bought my HP Pavilion laptop. It was tax free weekend in North Carolina so I had to stand in line to get my laptop and my router. The setup was confusing, but I was so excited to get my laptop up and going, so some of the blame goes on me. Once I got the router working, I have not any problems with it so far. I live in a house with three levels. My router is downstairs next to my desktop computer. I am on my laptop right now, any I have a very strong signal. I always have a strong signal when I am on the third level. It is good when I am at home, but when I start my Fall semester in college next week, I can not use this router in my dorm room. Dude seriously, BUY THIS ROUTER!!!!!!"

Pros: Easy set up for routine useage. Cons: Does not work with the Windows Home Server Software
"Spoke with Netgear four times and still could not get the router to allow web connections to my home server web site. Does not allow remote control connections to my computer either. Netgear then blamed it on the Windows Home Server software and I was told to contact Microsoft. I returned the router and tried a Linksys, and It works perfectly with the software. Linksys was same price."

Pros: Worked for three days Cons: Everything
"I bought this router when I bought my computer and had Best Buy set it up for me. The router worked for three days then I could not connect to the internet. I called my cable provider thinking it was a problem with my modem as the computer and router had been installed for only three days. After a half hour of trouble shooting we found that the router was the problem. I took the router back to the store and the gentleman suggested that I should get a Linksys router as the Netgear router I had purchased had already quit working. I went with the Linksys router and have not had one problem since."

Pros: Price, easy setup, whole house range Cons: None so far
"This is the second router that I have owned. My old router connected my laptop to my network at 10 Mbps and wouldn't work outside the room. The RangeMax works in all the rooms and outside on the patio at 54 Mbps or better and never drops a connection. One of the Best Buy employees said he had the RangeMax 824 and never had a problem. The checkout cashier said he had one and it was "awesome". I agree, awesome it is!"

Excellent Purchase

Pros: Looks cool, secure, and it works Cons: Setup could have been easier
"I purchased this unit to replace a Linksys unit that has given me nothing but headaches. It was recommended by an employee, and after speaking with him for a few minutes, I could tell he actually knew what he was talking about. It took about an hour to set up to my liking, and I think the process could have been easier; it is NOT a plug and play unit which is the only thing keeping it from getting 5 stars. I used to have to reset my Linksys router 10-15 times a day because it would just drop out, but haven't had a problem with this one. I'm getting a 96% signal at 50ft away through 3 walls, and haven't been able to get a signal below 95% anywhere in my house. The unit itself is sitting in my entertainment center in a cabinet on top of my Xbox360, and under a receiver, dvd player, satellite box, and TV (the white matches the 360 and the green lights on the front match as well) which makes the signal strength even more impressive. My Linksys unit sat on top of the cabinet with a Hawking hi-gain antenna and it could only muster 70% in my room. I used to buy all Linksys stuff, now, it's all going to be NETGEAR. This is an awesome purchase and you won't be disappointed."

Pros: price? Cons: unreliable and poor reception
"This is the second one of this model I've bought, and my third Netgear router. My first two routers lasted a little over a year before crapping out. The second one of this model I've bought has started going out on me in less than 6 months! My wireless devices have a hard time picking up reception from the router. Now, the router keeps dropping out the signal entirely. I would recommend looking at another router all together...probably from a different manufacturer."
