What's great about it: inexpensive
What's not so great: lacks solid main stereo pair
"This is an ideal option if you love your current expensive stereo speakers and just want to expand to 5.1. The front and rear pairs are the same. I just added the rear pair, center and SW to my existing system. If you tried to buy separates you'd pay way more."

What's great about it: Inexpensive, Good Quality
What's not so great: Cloth speaker covers
"This set is very good for the price. I had a reciever and all I needed was the speakers. I liked that there were mounting holes, so I installed these very quickly. These are perfect just to get you by and if you dont want to spend a ton of money."

What's great about it: cost, speaker size, clarity, powered subwoofer, easily mounted on stands
"The Yamaha 5.1 Channel Surround Sound Home Theater Speaker System performs as sold. It is an excellent way to turn a 5.1 channel receiver into a decent home theater system. I chose to go with the speakers instead of buying a "combination" system so that I can have the benefit of using the reciever to play CDs, DVR, and home PC system through it... adding the speakers was a great addition."

What's great about it: Excellent price to quality ratio.
What's not so great: None.
"I researched many speakers very thoroughly and I chose this system for the bedroom (based on the dollar to feature aspect), so the space I am working with is relatively small in contrast to other rooms of the house one might choose to put a home theater system, and this speaker system + my 42" LCD puts us right at the movie theater!
The downfiring bass does not overpower and the 2-way feature on the rest of the group really brings every Blu-Ray disc we watch to life."

What's great about it: Great for the cash
"I hooked these speakers up to my Sony AV reciever, and I think they sound great for satellite speakers. From reading the other negative reviews, I dont know if they have an insufficient AV reciever, or if they are just used to high end speaker set ups, but for the little cash I think they are great."

What's great about it: Great sound. Great size, great price.
What's not so great: Bass is slightly lacking from the sub, mids are not really clear, Grill is cheap cloth
"I kept putting off getting myself a surround sound system because I was low on cash. Finally I figured that something was better than nothing. Instead of going for a mid priced system I figured I would get a cheap system and use for awhile till I got the cash I needed.
Man am I glad I did that. This system does exactly what I need it to. I have a smaller room, and these speakers sound great. You won't get earth shattering bass, but in reality I don't want that at the moment. It sounds realistic and that's what I really wanted.
The speakers mounted nicely on my wall, and sound excellent. I definitely recommend this system to anyone trying to save a buck but still looking for a decent system."

Broken right out of the box

"Right out of the box one speaker did not work, being mechanicaly and electricaly inclined I took it apart and found one wire unattached. I did not want to waste more of my time exchanging it so I just fixed it myself.
They should have tested these before boxing them up IMO. Not very loud speakers either. The sub hits deep though, that is good."

What's not so great: Plan on replacing the included speaker wire
"This system is used in a fairly small (12 x 13) room, and fills it very well. After a little experimenting with the receiver's subwoofer crossover-point control, and playing a wide range of music to make minor tweaks to it, I am very happy with this speaker package. It's not my "main system", just the bedroom system - but on a "good sound per dollar spent" basis, it's highly competitive WITH my main system (large Polk system in a large media room)."

What's great about it: Thundering bass, mids and highs in all the right proportions
What's not so great: wires included in the kit are not all that great, but can be used
"Attached to the new plasma screen I just got, my system is getting serious. The bass is great for such a small unit, the surround, center and front speakers are small and unobtrusive though produce a beautiful range of mids and highs with virtually no static at high power without a signal (press it to your ear to hear anything type quiet). The units look sharp. Well produced, clean edges and nice finish. Easily placed around the room for a clean look and finish.
If you can't afford some of the higher end systems but still want a good clean sound that can be cranked up for your favorite action movie, this system will do the trick!"

"From the reviews online, I expected more from this system. I was scared when I saw how tiny the satellite speakers were, but I kept hearing the reviews in back of my mind. I appreciated the included spool of speaker wire, but I was hoping for a color-coded system. Installation and wall mounting is simple enough, but the true test is powered on... The system does a fair job with movies, but music is not very clean through the subwoofer at all. Overall, this feels cheap compared to others I've heard. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this system to others, and would recommend the low-end Polk set or an Onkyo system."

Better sound than speakers 3 times as large!

"I needed to down size from my original surround system speakers and these Yamaha's have the all the sound and more, for a fraction of the price of the competition!
I found out that I had been missing the very high frequencies and good center voices for years. I also found out that my older surround receiver is just fine and doesn't need to be replaced, just needed better speakers.
These compact speakers fit where ever you can find a little space and also work great on stands. I have the little rear speakers mounted on nice looking pole stands in the corners, behind the couch and end table, where they are at the proper height and out of sight. Wall mounting is also an option, and they even come with that type of hardware.
The powered sub-woofer has great roomshaking bass and pleanty of power. I have it turned up about half way on the power control knob on the rear speaker panel and it sounds like a movie theater or better.
My surround receiver has optical digital audio inputs from both my MediaCenter computer and the digital cable box, and now with these speakers I really enjoy the quality Dolby and DTS surround sound that is available with today's multimedia, cable TV and DVD's."

"its no klipsch quintet, but then again, its not a $500 system. for the money, this is a great system: very good sound and it will get loud. the only downside is the lack of instructions, if you have never set up a sound system it may take you a while to get everything figured out."
