What's great about it: Innovative, strong riffs; another epic
What's not so great: Contains 1 slow love song
Octavarium may be Dream Theater's best studio album.
The Root of All Evil gets it started with an explosive, classic-sounding riff as Petrucci inoculates the album with a high energy level. A token love song follows that is the polar opposite, showing the band's range.
These Walls features an unusual guitar-tuning sounding intro followed by an innovative and effective keyboard rhythm by Rudess.
After a warm but up-tempo ballad Walk Beside You, the band rocks out again in semi-metal tunes Panic Attack and Never Enough, before getting serious and slowing down a bit for the haunting Sacrificed Sons.
The album finishes very strong with the title track, a 24 minute, 5 stage marathon compilation which is thoughtfully written and meticulously laid out. The stages sound completely different on their own, but are musically and lyrically tied together as only Dream Theater can do. Clever lyrics make references to scores of songs from the past, and individual definitions of the 8 songs contained on the album.
Fold in the services of an orchestra, and Octavarium is the best epic since Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.
