What's great about it: campaign mode What's not so great: online play
"Having been a huge fan of the Halo series, this game gave me a nice little break while waiting for Halo3 to come out. The environment is very nice looking and the weapons are alot of fun to play with. Co-op let's the team separate on some areas so they are not always fighting together. I'm not a big fan of the online play. It's kind of limited and the maps are pretty small."

What's great about it: Great campaign, esp. in co-op mode What's not so great: Online multiplayer is repetative and slow
"I bought this game in the first few weeks that it came out. I loved the campaign while I played it through with my friends. At first, I also loved the online multiplayer. However, I've tried to get back into it, but now Xbox Live is overrun by Gears fanatics who play the game 24/7. These kids know every square inch of every map, and they run the same route every time and are able to beat casual players every round. Basically, playing online goes like this: spawn, run to a location, get killed quickly, spectate for the next 5 minutes, repeat. If people with less experience could match up with people of the same ability, it might be a worthy game, but that never seems to happen. Maybe I'm just not cut out for this game, as I'm above a level 40 in Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4, but competing with others online in Gears is seemingly impossible. I'd strongly recommend one of the latter two games over Gears any day."

"I thought Gears wasnt al that great, i mean ya, good graphics, Gore, blood, all that good stuff, but it just did not seem fun anymore after the first time i beat it. Its hard isnt that hard either. this is not that good of a game dont buy, rent!"

What's great about it: Everything! What's not so great: Nothing!
"AWESOME!!! That pretty much wraps up the overall feelilngs of this game. I have had this game ever since it has come out, and I am still playing it. I am going to go get COD 4 today or tomorrow, but for now, I am still having fun in online player matches. As for the early reviews of no respawn making the game less fun, that is not true, in real life, you only die/live once. Anyway, overall awesome game."

"This is the best game I've ever owned! Really fun to play. Has unbelieveable graphics. Playing online is really fun too, especially "Execution." Get-behind-cover controls really enhance gameplay. The only thing bad I have to say about it is that the single player campaign was too short. I was having too much fun for it to be over that soon! Would recommend this game to everyone."

"Gears of War is a third person shooter, based in an alternate reality world where, basically, you kill aliens. The story line itself is probably the best I've ever seen, maybe even better than Halo. Add that to the amazing and inovative gameplay and you have an incredible story mode. I thoroughly enjoyed playing every second of the campaign. The characters always provide entertainment in the form of comedy or just being cool. But once again, this all ties into the gameplay. Unlike other games, Gears emphasizes taking cover over charging your enemies. This is great in story mode, because you soon learn how to use it to great affect, which allows you the satisfaction of out-thinking you're opponents (which are pretty smart) in order to win each battle. However, I didnt like this kind of strategy in competitive play on Live. Ironically, it seems that the best way to win on Xbox Live is too abandon all of the strategies taught in the story mode and just charge at your opponents with a shotgun. This is my major problem with Gears. It often seems that games are decided by two guys running around in circles shooting each other with the shotgun (that you spawn with). It turns out that every strategy like taking cover, gaining high ground, and using an assault rifle for medium range attacks, are completely useless. Every game is a race for the sniper rifle and a shotgun duel. Also, the game isnt competitive because hit detection and damage are calculated randomly, making it possible to get a head-shot with a shotgun from across the map. To sum it up, amazing story line, horrible Xbox Live play."

What's great about it: Graphics, co-op play, and hidden cogs. What's not so great: Online ranked games.
"I'm not sure this game needs another review, but at the same time I like people to know what I think. Gears of War is an excellent game. The single player graphically is phenomenal and the facts that you can play it with a friend on the same x-box 360 or through Xbox live from different countries. The campaign is a little short, but certainly fun to play and worth going through a few times. During the game you will find "cog" tags which if you find all of them you will receive some achievements for (I love hidden things in games). Online death match I do not like that much. It is broken, no respawn which makes it more real, but not fun. A short game is the best reason for it all. Also, you can't play ranked games with your friends, or with two people on the same x-box 360. Gears of War is still an extremely fun game.
The Achievements on this game are good enough a good mix of easy, intermediate, and hard. Although the hard ones seem a little too hard, but if you get them it's probably a good feeling."

"I got this game a month after it came out knowing nothing about this game at all. This is Def a next Gen game and one of only a few that have come out latley that can truly be called that. I love the Camp. all tho a bit short and not enoguht so called bosses to fight. The co op part is great too realy helps to ahve a freind get you threw the hard stuff. The cover system is great I love be able to take cover and blind fire over sand bags and other objects int he game. Let's now talk about the MULT game play. It is fun and the maps are great just wish that they would add more and work out some more of the kinks in the online play. Seems that they kind of put this game ont he back burner for now and are focused ont he PC version. Some of the problems that we all have had are sticking to things and firing on some one point blank only to have them then turn around and one shot you with there shotgun. They have cleaned up most of the little glitche sint he game but there is always people out there that find a new way to do them cause the have to cheat to win. That kinda of wears thing on most like me. This is a great game if you like a cation packed shooting game this one is for you. No disapointments here I can;t wiat for the second one to come out."

"One of the better games for the 360. The Chainsaw Gun is the best weapon ever! The characters of the game are pretty awesome. The game is a little repetive and is pretty challeging sometimes when you play on hardcore and insane."
