Good HTIB system without a mess08/08/2008
By kngVTECfrom EVERETT WA
What's great about it: Good sound quality, universal remote, easy setup What's not so great: no EQ adjustment, a bit pricey
"The sound is nice and clear but a bit low in bass. Its very easy to install. Also, at the beginning a was a bit skeptical of a 2.1 surround system but I' m not disappointed. Great for smaller rooms. Overall, if you want decent sound quality and sort of a "plug and play" setup. This might be the one for you."

What's great about it: Full Range, excellent clarity, simple to connect What's not so great: Speaker wall mounts require easy to install; no volume bar appears on TV during adjustment.
"Glad I purchased this system in lieu of a complete home theater system. Sound quality is excellent and completely replaces TV speakers. Works great with my 42" Plasma TV and DVD/VCR player. Bose remote was programmed to link all my components into one."

Great if you Know what you are doing07/22/2008
By LoveTech
"Recently purchased the Cinemate system to improve sound quality for my new SONY HD TV in our family room which has very good picture but very poor sound. Cinemate is extremely easy to set up and will provide much better sound than most TV speakers. Improved clarity in the speaking parts and much richer musical aspects and effects. Enough bass for family room viewing. It is NOT going to be the equivalent of a media room type system and I don't think it is intended to be. When I want to blast the plaster I go upstairs to that room. It is the perfect system for a multi use room where one member of the family does not want wires, cords and equipment showing all over the place but someone else wants better than average sound. Keeping in mind this sets up about like and as easy as a PC based speaker system and produces nice sound with NO receiver I was impressed. If you buy it for what it is designed to do...there is nothing else like it on the market."

good 1st time purchase05/26/2008
By tonybonesfrom detroit, michigan
What's great about it: good for a small room. What's not so great: not enough surrond for the sound
"For a 1st time purchase, this is a nice system. This is great for a small room. This system isnt big enough for a large living room...or a basement. If you have a small 'TV' room this will do just fine. This system doesnt give you true surrond sound. This is good for beginners like me."

Solid upgrade04/29/2008
By rdk20001from Dover, DE
What's great about it: Rich sound, looks good and easy set up What's not so great: No adjustments
"If you are looking for a easy audio solution for your t.v. than look no further. This system is a snap to set up, looks good and delivers a decent 5.1 sound stage. Bass reproduction is good and if you want more place the bass module in a corner. Bose has done all the thinking for you from equalization to surround effect set to average room accustics. The down side is it is not adjustable. No bass or treble adjustments. No adjustments for atmosphere or room size like 'hall or theater' to phase in the surround effect. Other reviewers might have given it a lower score for these short comings but they should have known these limitations when they bought it. For its purpose it sounds good is a solid choice."

Excellent System04/24/2008
By advgivefrom Atlanta, GA
What's great about it: Rich, Crisp Sound What's not so great: can't think of any
"I bought this system to go with my new 1080P Samsung TV. I have been very satisfied with the purchase. I live in a one bedroom condo and didn't want a system with all the wires for all the surrond speakers. Now if you want true surround sound you need a 5.1 system. However, this system sounds much better than 5.1 systems I have heard around the same price range. I have read others saying there is not enough bass and I have to disagree. I can not turn this sytem up more than probably 25% of its capacity because I do not want to disturb my neighbors. There is plenty of bass and you get clean, clear, crisp music the way it should be heard. I do not think you will be dissappointed in this system. Excellent choice, Bose speakers are the best! I am enjoying all my DVDs and CDs !!!!!!!!!!"

Great Sound for the Price!04/22/2008
By Jazzguyfrom McKinney, TX
What's great about it: Clear, crisp, balanced sound What's not so great: Not adjustable
"I love this product. The sound is very clean. I hear much more detail than ever on my favorite shows. The sound has a good balance, but I would prefer a little more base. Too bad there is no way to make adjustments. I have also noticed that the base is stronger on DVDs than on standard TV progams. This doesn't quite get to the level of theater sound, but it is a huge improvement over standard TV speakers. I listened to a lot of systems before I bought this one, and none of the others even came close for twice the price."

Don't Buy This04/22/2008
By MikeCufrom Madison, WI
What's great about it: Nice sounding small speakers, small speakers nice size, easy to install What's not so great: No Bass, no bass adjustment, remote thata doesn't work witha direct tv hd box, thick black ugly wires are hard to hide.
"If you are looking for a system that will blow you away, don't buy this one. This system is prices way too high for the quality of the system. I hooked it up (easy) and sat back to listen to my system. I can not begin to tell you how disappointed I was in the bass with this system. There is basically no bass in this system unless you crank it up to ear splitting levels. Even then the bass is overpowered by the smaller speakers (which are actually very nice sounding). There is no bass adjustment so you have no control over the sound levels. Another annoying is that you can not turn on this system without the remote control. Speaking of the universal remote, it did not work with my direct TV HD box either. I messed with this system for 2 days and finally took the thing back. When it was all hooked up it amounted to small upgrade over the TV speakers themselves. All this for a unreasonable price of 500 bucks. Give me a break. At least best buy gave me a refund (....well a gift card) which I used to buy a sony system half the price and 10 times the quality. Don't buy this cinemate unless you want to be disappointed. Bose messed up on this one."

What's great about it: space saving/sounds good What's not so great: no bass adjustment
"i bought this because i've always wanted to own a bose system. i also chose this system because i live in a condo and share a common wall with my neighbor and therefore do not need a system that will shatter glass.i'm sure my homeowners association wouldn't approve.i like that it's compact.i like the sound.it would be nice to be able to adjust sound levels.the thing i long for the most however,is an on-screen display since it's run through the tv because there's no receiver. but i've learned to live with it.a persnickity audiophile i think would not enjoy this system but for a condo/apartment this is worth looking at."

By rkleblancfrom North Hollywood, CA
What's great about it: Nice sound quality for the price What's not so great: Won't blow you away
"Sound is reasonably good, but you don't ever quite feel like you've reached that movie theater quality sound. Agree with other reviews that the bass just isn't sufficient--would recommend a higher end Bose system with surround sound if you can afford it. However, if you're looking for basic stereo that's a step up from your TV, this is a fine way to go for the price."

What's great about it: Ultra clear front speakers What's not so great: No Bass! No adjustments to anything.
"I hate to give bad reviews, but this was a let down for me.Whenever I want to purchase something I always read reviews and if I really want it I kind of ignore the bad reviews, please listen. The two front speakers are awesome..period,just like a Bose should be,BUT the sub is too weak.I am an average Joe on sound systems so I'm not like bass crazy or anything but really I feel the sub was just, well, nothing. If they could let you adjust the sub it still would be in my home today, like I said the front speakers were fantastic, but give me some more beef on the sub folks."

Real Bang For The Buck01/29/2008
By Anonymousfrom St. Louis, MO
What's great about it: Easy Setup, Tru-Life Sound & Bass What's not so great: No Adjustments, Lack Of Inputs
"To date this system has been blasted by quite a few but my opinion...reasonable expectations required. For a "home theater in a box" (HTIB) type solution the CineMate certainly sounds better as a 2.1 system than many under $1000 5.1 systems out there. Setup is easy and the sound quality is quite pleasant. I challenge any critic of this system to compare the build quality and performance of the CineMate bass module to the cheap, poorly built, so-called subwoofers shipping with most HTIBs under $1000...or for most under $500 sub-woofers for that matter (the list price of the CineMate which includes bass module, 2 satellites, amplifier, remote control and cables!). Rap on most under $1000 HTIB speakers and you'll hear obvious vibrations and resonances from the speaker cabinets. Not so with either the Bose bass module or the satellite speakers. They're well made, heavy and well damped, something that can't be said for most HTIB speakers. Another unique feature of the CineMate is the virtual surround. While granted, certainly no match for a well made 5.1 system (a system well exceeding the $500 list price for the CineMate) for smaller rooms, bedrooms and apartments, the surround effect can be quite pleasant and even surprising at times, extending the sound-field well out to the sides of the speakers. I also dare most critics to compare the amplifier output of the CineMate versus other HTIBs as well. Sound pressure levels far exceed reasonable levels for my applications and distortion seems very low, again something that cannot be said for most HTIBs. Complaints? A few. The so-called universal remote, while well made, and very intuitive (again a plus versus the cheap, confusing, less than intuitive remotes included with most HTIBs) is certainly less than universal. With no remote learning capabilities (and no means to add new codes based on my research) this was my first letdown. Also, unlike other Bose lifestyle systems of which I'm familiar, there are no tone controls, balance controls, bass/satellite level controls or cinema bass/music bass adjustments available with the CineMate. While I suspect the reason is to keep things simple, I bet many of the sound quality complaints by others could be overcome by simple treble and bass adjustments. Related, being able to shift volume balance left our right when sitting off-center, or when speakers cannot be positioned exactly equidistant (as is the case in my space) would be a welcome feature as well. Finally, a little expandability beyond a single pair of input jacks would be a nice option (and since we're talking about wishes, a digital input wouldn't hurt). Having connections for a TV and iPod (or other MP3 player or device) for example would be nice. Based on the design of the system...using an external input/IR remote breakout box connected by cable to the main bass unit, it seems providing as an extra-cost option a multiple input/IR (and for that matter an IR/RF remote receiver as well) would be helpful. Right now to accomplish something similar you either must route your iPod through a TV input (as I have) and use your TV inputs to switch to the iPod, use an inexpensive switch box (available at Radio Shack for example) or use a pre-amplifier to do switching duties (thus creating additional complexity with multiple remotes, potential impedance matching issues and obvious expense). In closing, I have absolutely no regrets...as I approached the CineMate with reasonable expectations. I purposely chose the CineMate as I did not want the complexity of running 5.1 wires throughout my space and the poor bass response from cheaply built 5.1 speakers. I suspect if you approach the CineMate with reasonable expectations as well, you'll agree that it is a well built, pleasant sounding system that does indeed sound better than your TV speakers or comparably priced HTIB."

Bose does it again!01/23/2008
By RobCfrom North Carolina
What's great about it: Great sound, Easy install. What's not so great: None
"I've been looking to step up to a bose system from my old 5.1 system. I first heard this system at a Bose outlet but decided to wait on the purchase. I checked the system out again at my local Best Buy and was once again impressed with the sound out of this system. So I finally broke down and made the purchase and I am so glad that I did. The sound out of just two speakers is absolutely amazing. I feel like I have more surround than I did with my 5.1 system. I am not sure why the other reviews said that it lacked bass as mine was almost to the point of shaking the windows tonight while watching a couple blu-ray movies. If you are looking for a a good surround set up and dont want to deal with wires for rear surround get this system!"

Not What I Thought01/22/2008
By Anonymousfrom Chicago, IL
What's great about it: Great crisp, bright, tweeters with beautiful clarity. What's not so great: Woofer is weak and not what I thought.
"The product was easy to assemble, had great high and mid sound, the surround sound was pretty impressive for only two speakers, but was poor on the low bass. The woofer is really weak compared to nicer tower speakers or even computer speakers with a woofer. Get some Klipsich speakers. EXAMPLE: If you've ever seen Batman Begins and heard the really low bass when you hear Batman talks for the first time or when he is in that devlish mode later because of the drugs... that is the tester. The bass on the Bose woofer is really weak and doesnt have the nice effects that higher powered woofers have."

Amazing sound for its size!01/18/2008

What's great about it: Easy set-up, less wires, amazing sound quality! What's not so great: No optical inputs!
"At first, I was in doubt because there are no optical inputs on the module. But even with just stereo cables, this system rocks! Every sound is clean and crisp, although it lacks bass. I have given up my 5.1 surround set-up for this, which I neved thought I would. It is worth every penny and everything is just plain and simple, except the sound. I live in an apartment so this is perfect. Can't wait to get my own house so I can get the 5.1 speakers bose has to offer."

Great for Price01/14/2008
By BoseBraviaCombofrom Los Angeles
What's great about it: Excellent Sound What's not so great: Sony Bravia TV can duplicate sound at high levels; No manual power button
"I just bought this as an "improved" speaker system for my Sony Bravia DLP. Frankly, I cannot tell the difference between these speakers and the TV's speakers when I crank the TV speakers up to high volume. But. . . I am keeping the speakers and love the sound, because I can get a richer sound at lower volumes with these speakers. One other thing--the Bose manuel suggests setting your TV on Audio speakers--Fixed. I actually run mine in conjunction with the TV speakers and on Variable. I get a center speaker so to speak (from the TV speakers) to match the Bose, and I really like the sound make up. Also, with this setting, I can Mute my bose speakers with any remote that Mutes the TV itself. If you set the TV to Audio out and Fixed--you will have to use the Bose remote to mute the speakers. And I will join the overall minor griping on two levels. The only way to turn the speakers on is with the remote. I wish you could do it with a switch on some part of the system. Also, you can never see how high the volume is on your speakers. I wish you could see the volume setting. This is another reason why I like to use the variable setting. I can set the Bose to an acceptible level and then use my TV sound level to gauge where I am on the speakers. Enjoy"

What's great about it: GREAT SOUND, MINIMAL WIRES, EASY HOOKUP
"I was expecting not to like these speakers, but I wanted to give it a shot because of the minimal wires. I was suprised how clear and full the speakers sounded. At first, I had it hooked up to the dvd player and it sounded decent. Than I hooked it up to the tv and wow what a difference it made. Sounded even clearer and fuller. I'd recommend hooking it up through the tv because then you have some control over treble and bass. I wanted a great sounding system without all the wires and speakers with out having to compromise on sound quality. This system is great!"

What's great about it: Extremely easy to hook up What's not so great: Subwoofer does not have the UMPH
"The 2 regular speakers work perfectly fine and have decent sound to them. However, the subwoofer itself was very disappointing. It absolutely has no bass quality whatsoever. When I went to return the system back into Best Buy, 3 different people approached me and told me they had the same problem. The subwoofers are no good, plain and simple. :("
