What's great about it: Good price point, image quality, zoom and stabilization
What's not so great: Not as durable as more expensive lenses.
I took this lens out of the box and attached it to my Canon 60D. The images were clear and sharp for a lens at this price point. The stabilization feature performed well while taking hand held pictures at all ranges. The auto focus on this lens was a bit off for me I favored the manual setting.

What's great about it: Ease of use, quality
What's not so great: price
Nice quality pictures. Fast auto focus. It's heavy to carry around at an all day event (i.e. track meet) would use my smaller camera unless I had a caddy :) Pricey. Have a Canon powershot sx20is 18-100mm non-SLR (love this camera). I made the jump to an SLR for the 300 mm capabilities. Looking at some nature shots, birds. Have to say I'm disappointed. I loved my sx20, there isn't much difference in my capabilities. I should have gone with a larger mm. Live & learn. The expense is a little scary, live in fear of dropping it. At the end of the day you're getting a Canon, it lives up to it's name, but weigh your options carefully.

What's great about it: Canon USM mecanisme and IS
What's not so great: The price it make no sense :-((
Canon 70-300mm F4-5.6 IS lens.
First things to point out this is an EF lens and it will work with all Canon SLR cameras. The actual weight of this lens is 630 grams and is not that heavy, the actually body of this lens is made of plastic.
Also this lens has differed function :
- Autofocus and Manual focus
- Image Stabilizer to switch between 1 or 2 mode
- Zoom lock button to prevent the lens creep
- Max Aperture on this lens is F4-5 to 5-6 if you want a lens with a bigger Aperture mode you may need to look into Canon L series lenses.
- This lens is quick and quiet focus that is because it has a cam USM ring motor.
If your budget is low do to a bad economy TAMRON and SIGMA ( ...with a Macro function built in ) are half the price compared with this baby but without IS.
Overall the Canon 70-300mm is an excellent lens and take sharp pictures it has a quick and quiet mechanism...Thanks to Canon USM ring motor. The image stabilization is an excellent bonus taking pictures at low light and when its zoomed at 300mm. Its more expensive then TAMRON and SIGMA but is less versatile it does not have the Macro built in. But then again if you into Macro photography you may need to buy a dedicated lenses for that purpose.

I've been using this lens for 2 months and I'm very impressed with its capability. It has produced some incredibly detailed photos, even from a considerable distance. It's not designed for close-ups though. Overall, I'd highly recommend this lens to others.

What's great about it: Love to zoom in.
What's not so great: Wish it statred at a lower mm.
This is a nice lens, but I wish the range were a little better; wish it started at 18mm instead of 70 mm. This seems to be the only lens Canon offers that offers a decent telephoto distance. Forces me to constantly change lenses. At this price I live in fear that I am going to drop it while chaging it out. Heavy lens.

What's great about it: Ease of use, image quality, speed of 1st and subsequent shots.

Canon makes the best camera and telephoto lenses in my opinion. The price, however, is the only drawback. Although they have cheaper versions of their cameras and lenses you will pay for the higher end units.

What's great about it: It is fun to use, light to carry and the lock keeps it from creeping.
What's not so great: Higher cost
I've had the non IS version of this lens for over twenty years. It took great pictures to the level of moderate cropping. I printed very few pictures larger than 11X14 and was satisfied. Introduce a t3i and 18 megapixels; add a 1.6 multiplier and I now have a supposed 480mm lens. I was disappointed with my results and purchased the IS version and was pleasantly surprised. I understand it is not an upper level Canon lens. Even with a tripod and a dropped shutter, there is is fuzziness and chromatic aberrations. For less extreme and moderately cropped shots, it does a really good job. My friends and colleagues are asking me for prints all the time. My range of use is extended as compared to my older lens.

What's great about it: Super fast focusing and image stabilizer.
What's not so great: Heavy if using for long periods of time without tripod.
I read several reviews and looked at multiple lenses before I decided on this lens. My budget did not allow for L series lenses. What sold me was the USM. Focusing is super fast compared to other lenses. Picture quality is superb and the image stabilizer is a big plus. I was able to get some great close ups while on vacation with this lens that I would not have been able to get with my 18-55 standard lens. Great for candid shots of family. Not a lens you would use as your everyday lens - a little heavy and your limited as to how close you can get. I am looking forward to using this lens for years to come. A great second lens for your camera.

Used this lens a lot at SEMA Show 2010...I got some epic shots there even when I was over 150+ yards away from the object that were in my shots. Its a good starter telephoto lens.

What's great about it: Easy to use, Easy to get the shot you want, Fantastic price if you can't afford an L series!
What's not so great: USM Noise
I've had this lens for 3 years now and I have loved it the entire time. I used it for every photo shoot I did, and worked FANTASTIC for shooting horses and horse shows especially. If you're a nature shooter or you shoot planes, or anything far away or small, this lens would work great for you. I've had lots of success with it focusing accurately (the camera you have is a big help, too. Can't shoot a good image with a bad camera, even if you have a good lens). My only complaint is that the motor is loud, but that's what happens when you get a lens with a motor in it. I haven't had a problem with the motor noise scaring off any forest friends, though, so I don't think that's something anyone has to worry about. It really doesn't even bother me, but it might bother some people. The motor also sucks up the battery juice a lot faster. Not a big deal if you have more than one battery, but just a heads up.
You really can not go wrong, in my opinion, with this lens. The USM makes shooting far away things possible without a tripod. Doesn't mean you won't need one on occasion, but 98% of the time, you won't!
Sadly, after having this lens for 3 years, I do have to send it in for repair because AF is no longer responsive. It may have just been from it jarring around in the bag I carry my equipment in, but who knows. I would definitely buy this lens again if I have to!
I would recommend this to a friend!

What's great about it: quiet USM motor.
What's not so great: Heavy, needs a sturdy tripod
If you're not into spending thousands on Canon L lenses, this is a great alternative. Focusing is fast and accurate. The Image Stabilization is top notch. 2 modes are available, one being excellent for panning with a moving subject. This lens is terrific for wildlife, landscapes, and even the occasional moon picture. It's not light- get yourself a good, solid tripod with smooth movement.

What's great about it: High quality, image stabilization.
What's not so great: Haven't found anything yet.
This is an excellent 70-300mm telephoto zoom lens. It features auto-focus capability and image stabilization. I've not used it a lot yet (it's been raining like cats and dogs here!), but it has "heft" to it - it feels very solid. While it's not Canon's "L" glass, the optics seem to be very good and I'm sure they'll suffice for nearly all users except for top level pros.
