"The best value for long term gamers. You could buy a 3 or 6 month membership but why would you want to when this will save you almost 50% off the other memberships. It's also required for streaming your netflix movies to your TV through your 360 when the new Xbox experience comes out on the 19th."

What's great about it: Cheap, Gives access to online play
What's not so great: Not free, unnecessary if you don't play online
"A lot of people complain about the price of Xbox LIVE, but when you buy it a year at a time, it's only $50 for a year, or about $4 a month. That is not a bad price AT ALL for a great online service.
You're paying for online matchmaking, leaderboards, messaging, and more.
The only downside here is that it isn't completely free, but the small price is worth it for the great features. However, if you don't play games online, you can skip this, as everything else about Xbox Live, including the ability to download the awesome Xbox Live Arcade games, are available with the free Silver level account.
Bottom line: Like to play games online? You need this."

"Ps3 and wii do not even compare with the functionality of xbox live. It is a little bit more expensive than it used to be but it is well worth it. Their isn't anything bad about live. But you may not be able to access it because the console always has hardware failure know as the red ring of death."

"This is insane, you can meet new friends on your Xbox 360, which can be on the other side of the world. You can be a STAR on XBOX LIVE. You have a gamertag, a gamerpicture, and a theme, and your playing all day. The two game I mostly play LIVE on is HALO 3 and CALL OF DUTY 4. I like it a lot."

When the labels on the game say "Game play online may change", they are truly true. With this card you receive 13 months of online play making it about seven dollars a month for online game play. "This is simply a mmust have for anyone who likes to play mulitplayer. I have had xbox live since it launched on the xbox and have loved it. It is. Most games have online multiplayer and some games even go as far as to have online co-op. I know some people don't like the idea of having to pay for online game play, but trust me you get what you pay for."

What's not so great: It costs extra money to have access to these things, and then you have to pay extra money for a lot of these as well
"This is certainly worth paying for; you can download demos for a lot of games and try them before you buy them. You can also download many gamer pictures and themes for your Xbox dashboard. There are also additions to games, like new maps, guns, cars, levels, etc. Also, you get a free month with this purchase. This is great for someone under 18 that does not have a credit card to pay with online and whose parents are do not want to pay it for them. You can play online without the gold membership, but there is so much more that you can do with it."

Necessity of life if you own a 360

"This is a must have if you own a 360. Xbox live lets you set up what is the gamer equivalent of facebook or myspace. You have friends lists and an inbox. You invite or get invited to games, which exist int he pregame lobby. This is similar to chat rooms or IM for those who haven't tried it yet. In Halo 3 for example, you get your group together and then you enter a game once the lobby is ready. You can chat and bring up to 3 guests with you, but guests can't go into ranked games. You can choose to stay with a group of favorites and track buddies online so you can try to keep gaming with people you know or try making new friends.
I won't lie, sometimes you encounter cheaters or people who just make the game the opposite of fun, but there are built in measures to make sure they won't hassle you and it's really a minor convenience. This is worth the price and it's easy to do.
Two drawbacks, only the account owner's profile can use the headset, guests have to get thier own account or simply not communicate. The other, for a whole 12 month subscription you'd figure a nice little bonus would be maybe 100 xbox points, or 1 free theme download. Granted there are some freebies and some cheap things on the marketplace, but a little bonus makes a good buy a 'Best Buy.' Regardless, still a good choice and you should not go without it."

"At first I was reluctant to buy the Xbox live gold membership. After all how much could I really be missing. The answer...A LOT! A games replay value goes through the roof with the ability to play in an online multiplayer match. You also get access to exclusive content on Xbox live, such as contests, gamer pics and themes, and more. All of this is in addition to what you already get with the free Xbox live silver membership. The ability to download additional game content, movies, tv shows, game demos, and more make this a must have. The bottom line is that while it might seem expensive, it is really a small price to pay for so much content. As long as you want to play agaist other gamers from all over the world and increase the replay value of almost all of your games, this is a must have."
