This system was great for everyday computing and listening to music (at first), but for gamers it has some serious drawbacks. First, there is no microphone input for online play on the Bose desktop control pod (but you can connect your I-Pod), can do that on the front panel of my PC. I have to run a seperate line from the headphones (mic) jack to the PC and the headphone jack to the Bose desktop control pod jack (Wires everywhere). If you use a key pad even more wires. Another drawback is the loss of audio during gameplay. I have a modern system with LOTS of ram but still loose audio during serious gameplay (REALLY, REALLY anoying). The system is now starting to crackle and pop EVEN WHEN TURNED OFF (also anoying). I checked Bose site for any kind of software updates or support but found none. I am going to loose this expensive USB system (at my loss) and get a much more reliable and user friendly standard mini jack set up.
What's great about it: Sound Quality at First
What's not so great: No mic jack

I have not heard music through a good pair of speakers in a long time. I am amazed at how these speakers have given me a new appreciation for music I have loved for years.
There are so many little things in a song that I have missed. I never knew it was there before. I have been listening to old music and new music for the past few days and it feels like it is the first time I have heard the song. It is amazeing what the little details add to sa song.
The volume control module is also a nice touch. The touch sensative on and off button and the smooth volume control adds to the music experience as you adjust it to the right volume.
At first the speakers seemde to have too much high range and not enough lows. After adjusting the base up to the level that I like, I am in listening heaven.
I can't believe the range in songs I hear that I never knew where there.
They were a little more than what I wanted to spend, but completely satisfied with the bigger investment.
What's great about it: The Sound
What's not so great: The price

I first bought this product expecting that it would solve all of my problems in trying to find the perfect sound system for me. However, I must admit, I was a bit disappointed. The sub does not hit hard at all and that pretty much did it for me. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge Bose fan, I have their on ear headphones (which are totally worth the money) I have their system in my car and it's a perfect blend of loud tweeters and heavy solid bass. However, this system really doesn't have that blend of hard solid bass to go along with their loud clear tweeters.
If someone were to ask me if these speakers we were worth the $249.99, I would respond, without hesitating, no. I returned these speakers back to the store and stuck with my Creative 2.1 speakers that I bought for $50 5 years ago (because for my ears, they were more powerful).
What's great about it: Two tweeters are loud and clear
What's not so great: Price, no bass whatsoever, the sub is also abnormally large and long.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

It took days for me to decide on buying this. Even though I was sure it is the best speaker out there, many biased reviews suggesting other speakers from H&R, AL Logi tech etc to be better value for money, I was so reluctant to buy a 2.1 companion series ii (the price being 4-5x more). After visiting BB for 3 consecutive days, testing various speakers, I finally bought the 2.1
In my opinion, others cannot even be compared with this speaker. Spend more and you will love the quality. You would realize that it is pricy because of the quality that has gone in there. All those marketing theory is not correct according to me.
But then, Bose is not for everybody at the end of the day. If you are of the type that any car is ok, any speaker will be ok. It will do the job for you just like any car will run if there is gasoline.
I would like to end the review with one note. Don't believe anybody, don't read any review. Just go to BB and listen, listen, listen. If you love quality and if you can make out the best from the worst, I am sure you will have a Bose speaker in your hands as you walk out! You will never mind the price and all the reviews will just disappear.
What's great about it: Quality, Quality, Quality. Show me a speaker that comes near Bose.
What's not so great: Of course the price. But as I said never mind because of the quality

My objective was to find something that sounded good, but was also flexible with what I could use it for. I decided on 2.1 powered systems as they provided me the flexibility to use my iphone, ipad or computer as music sources.
To start with the overall clarity and detail of these speakers is simply awesome! I researched everything I could and had my choices whittled down to the Bose Companion 3's, Klipsch Promedia 2.1, and Logitech Z-2300. All are very good and I want to make clear that my choice came down to my preferences of music and use. I am not interested in gaming, just music. My music tastes also revolve around classic rock, some new age/jazz and even classical. For me, these speakers were by far the best choice.
As I said earlier, the clarity and detail is unmatched. They just deliver a full rich sound that I found to be the best. For those who want to game or like rap and R&B, maybe they aren't the best choice as both the Klipsch and Logitech's have a louder boomier base. I personally like a more detailed bass, where you can hear the end of one note and the beginning of another. In other words clean punchy bass as opposed to loud muddy bass. Make no mistake, the Bose deliver excellent clean bass just not the boomy kind.
In addition the Bose look better than all the rest, the circular volume pod is nice and there is a control on the back of the sub to turn up the bass if you want. There is also 2 3mm inputs, one on the back of the sub, and one on the volume pod.
In conclusion, if you are like me, then get these, you will not regret it. Yes, they are a bit more expensive and there's no doubt, we're paying for that Bose name, but in the long run, I would rather pay an extra 50 or 70 bucks and be totally happy with my purchase, than save the money, knowing I didn't get what I really wanted.
I will also say that I am NOT a Bose fanboy. In fact, I generally don't like Bose with the exception of the old 901's I used to have in the 70's. I was NOT looking to buy Bose, but the reality is that when put up side-by-side with the competitors, the Bose just plain came out on top.
What's great about it: Full sound, claity and detail without sounding tinny.
What's not so great: Price is a bit high

I have had these for a year now and they have worked great for me. As long as the volume on the computer is set to less than half these speakers will produce amazing sound. I listen to a lot of Rock and Country, and I could not be happier with the sound. The bass is very clean and I have not noticed any missed notes as stated in some other reviews. I have had Klipsch, JBL, and Logitech before and none have come close to the crisp clean sound I get from my Bose. $250 is quite a bit for computer speakers, but I am a firm believer that buying Bose is a long term investment because of the quality product. I have had Bose home audio for 10+ years, and I have had no indication of these speakers giving up any time soon. Also, the sound control is awesome and convenient. I will never buy any other brand of computer speaker again.
What's great about it: Sound, Look, Ease of Use
What's not so great: Sound when computer volume is set too high

There isn't much to be said about these speakers. The subwoofer is amazing. It hits hard and it can also get very low. As for the speakers, they are very tinny. They are crisp and clear, but when turned up too loud, the sound can be piercing. With a little tuning and adjusting of an equalizer, they might sound fine.

What's not so great: Tinny speakers

I went to the store ready to buy the Klipish ProMedia 2.1 set until I listened to the Bose display set up. I felt in the store that the Bose was goingto be well worth the extra $100. I took them home, and they do look great. Problem is that they did not sound at all balanced as they did in the store. Very clear highs, no doubt, but there was no good mid range and the base seemed disconnected. DId not like the overall sound at all. I reteurned them and purhased the Klipsch which I am very happy with, especially as they were over $100 less on sale.
What's great about it: Take up very little space on the desktop and look great
What's not so great: Sound balance

Great sound, and looks great. Very convienet as well works nicely in my dorm, and when I bring it home in my bigger room stil fills up the room with the great Bose sound. Price tag made me hold off on getting them for almost a year until I decided to just do it one day, now I am mad I waited so long, worth every penny.

What's not so great: Base is a little big, price tag at first but worth it once you plug it in

I've owned Logitech Z-2300's for about 2 years now and they finally started to die on me. So today I went and bought these Bose speakers. I knew the subwoofer was going to be smaller but I was fine with that. Once I got home, I hooked them up and it was extremely simple. I couldn't believe how awful they sounded though. I tried adjusting the EQ in iTunes, picking presets, trying different types of music, they just sounded bad. The midrange was basically non-existant, the high end was just WAY to bright and the subwoofer bottomed out pretty much whenever you played it fairly loud. So I decided to compare my Logitech Z-2300's to my Bose and I just couldn't believe the difference. Simply put, my almost dead Logitech's sounded better than my new Bose Companion 3's... Not to mention I paid $250 for these Bose and only $125 for my Logitech's... I've owned these Bose for maybe a couple hours and they're already in the box ready to go back to Best Buy. Looks like I'll be ordering another pair of Logitech Z-2300's online.
What's great about it: Looks, easy setup, controller module
What's not so great: Sound quality, subwoofer, everything else.

I wanted better sound from my TV, but did not want to fork over $700 for a pretty good home theater system. I also did not want to mess with all the connections and had space concerns. I plugged these babies into the back of my Samsung TV and could not be happier with the sound quality. The bass and woofer sounds really bring movies and games to life.
Will warn you about one thing...kinda weird...kinda good bad:
The Good: Maybe it is just the set I got, but my speakers allow the TV speakers and the Bose speakers to run at the same time. Neat because my TV speakers actually have good highs. So now I have 5 speakers playing at once. If I want more treble/highs, I use my TV remote and increase the TV speaker volume (not the Bose).
The Bad: Unless I just can't figure it out, my TV remote does not make the Bose speakers change volume. You must use the control module to control the volume of your Bose spearkers. Not a big deal for me, but could be frustration for some...I love the sound...not surround, but great sound.
What's great about it: great sound
What's not so great: If using for your TV, control module controls sound, not your TV remote

Purchased these for my home office computer and am very pleased. Excellent separation and sound stage and although could be better in mid range, the sub woofer adds enough give a nice realistic sound. Like other reviewers the price, even on sale, seems high, but its what you pay to get BOSE name. Normally I'm not a fan of BOSE, but in this case there seems to be little else on the market that can compete to give you a realistic and enjoyable listening experience from computer speakers.
What's great about it: Soundstage, stereo speration, tight low end, clean highs, realistic sound, musical
What's not so great: price, could use more midrange

I bought these about six months ago after wanting a pair for four years. Very happy I bought these. I've found myself a few times listening to songs hearing depth I usually only hear via a good set of headphones.
They are great for on your desktop with their subtle look. And they don't rattle around like some other speakers when you turn up the volume.
Additionally their warranty support is hassle free! I would definitely buy another product from them.
What's great about it: sound, look
What's not so great: cable length to the remote speaker could be a foot longer

I'll start by mentioning that I just returned the Klipsch 2.1 pro media speakers and exchanged them for this set... I wanted to like the Klipsch, I have a 5 year old set of Klipsch that I love and think sound better than both the 2.1 pro media and this Bose set.. However I'll keep my comparison to the newer Klipsch 2.1 pro media and the Bose companion 3 series.
When I got the Klipsch 2.1 pro media speakers set up I was totally disappointed, they sounded flat... like a cheap pair of computer speakers. There was no richness, no detail in the highs and the bass from the subwoofer sounded muffled and hollow, the midrange that was there was just flat with no warmth or clarity. I let the system play continuously for 4 days hoping they would warm up and begin to sound richer... nope, still flat as a pancake. The louder you turned them up, the more it exposed how poor they sounded...
I returned the Klipsch and exchanged them for the Bose Companion 3 Series..
Right out of the box the Bose sounded WAY WAY better. The Highs are crisp with more detail (which, I think, is why some people think this set is all tweeter), the Bose have more of a richness through the whole range... No question they could use some more mid range but there is still more depth than the klipsch set. The Subwoofer is also more precise, it hits with more clarity and crispness, you can hear the kick drum and base lines individually without them getting muddy. The Subwoofer also fills in the midrange better than the Klipsch sub. Overall the Bose are louder, have more clarity, depth and richness though the entire range.
I can't tell you how glad I am that I decided to return the klipsch and exchange them for this Bose set... If you plan to use yours for listening to music go with the Bose.
What's great about it: Clarity, richness and detail. Quality sub.
What's not so great: Could use a bit more mid range.

We brought this system home today and hooked it up to our Samsung TV that doubles as our Wii monitor. I just watched "A Bridge Too Far" because the sound was so awesome I just had to watch the whole movie. I think it is a better value than a sound bar or some other lame speakers.
