What's great about it: I guess set up (although all speakers are somewhat an easy install), look but that's about it. What's not so great: Sound, No mid range, Price and value for the price, reliability, humming, tin can effect, cheap silver connection...
"Well I have shopped for computer speakers for a while now and read over a 1000 reviews and first bought the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 THX certified. I never own BOSE products before and decided I would try them out. They looked nice out of the box and the design is nice but is that the reason why someone would buy speakers, design?? I had my Klipsch and BOSE both hooked up and wow what a difference! The Klipsch had a depth and a sound to give you chills all the way down the spine. The Bose on the other end just don't cut it. I am trying to write a fair review here and have no particular favorite or hated brand to begin with. This is only my objective view on the matter. I believe if you buy the bose without having heard any other speakers and just upgrading from cheap computer speakers coming with the computer, then they are an upgrade. But otherwise you will be highly disapointed. I've tested the Klipsch and Bose side by side on the same music filed that have a 320 encryption and what a difference between the two products! Let's say that the bose have no medium whatsoever, and it almost is surprising. At first I thought I needed to get a check-up but then turned on the Klipsch and confirmed what I heard. It is definitely day and night. I highly recommend buying both products as Best Buy have them available and you will immediately understand what I mean. I think that Bose really cared about look and compact without really caring about performance. Sure when you put a product on a pedestal with a screen and all, it is attractive I admit. Even my wife pushed me to get the Klipsch which were right next to the Bose but I still decided to get both just as a comparison and since I have never owned any Bose product in my entire life. Well I can tell you that it will be my last product from them as I was disgusted. Well that said, I have over 3000 song on my Mac and tested a wide variety of songs just to see how Jazz, Rock, classical, hip-hop, RnB, acoustic sounded in comparison and well there is no comparison. Besdies, that, the companion 3 don't even compare as far as RMS watts and also they have this humming sound and also some humming. I really felt like this was not fair to sell something that is so weak in sound. Something that strikes me is, how can you sell a product supposed to be natural sounding when the companion 3 have the whole mid-range wiped out of the spectrum. This is an important range of sound, at least to me. Something else that shocks me is that Bose reps go to store and make salesman believe that in the two speakers supposed to stand on the desk, there are several drivers in them and that the grill is supposed to recreate pockets of air. Well I hate to say that this is misrepresentation because a simple shining the flashlight in the speakers reveals only one driver. So I assume it takes care of High range, mid-high range, mid range (which don't exist for bose). Thats a lot of work for a speaker system and is exactly why it sounds cheap with a metal sound kind of like a tin can sound to it. What I did? I returned the companion 3 and kept the Klipsch. And also the fact that for 250 dollars, you get a silver mini jack is unacceptable when they only cost 10 dollars for retail! I hope I can help somebody make a decision with this review. And please try a few for yourself. I'm only giving a star because I can't give zero and well the design is nice."

"I was so excited when I got this for Christmas. Finally, a set of good computer speakers. Wrong. I set them up, started up iTunes, played Megadeth, and, to my dismay, the left speaker crackled and shorted out. I played around with the wires and found that the jack in the sub-woofer that connects the sub-woofer to the computer fails at its job. The connection is very loose and if the wire is jostled at all, the speakers (especially the left one) crackle and short out.
I immediately went back to Best Buy to exchange my speaker set, thinking I had gotten a bad egg. Wrong again. The new set had the exact same problem."

"I'm an audiophile. If you want the music from your computer to sound good then this is NOT the sound system for you. Lots of highs, lots of lows, but absolutely NO mid range whatsoever! I messed with this system for 2 days trying to get it to sound even half way decent but no luck. There is no speaker in this system that produces midrange sound. On the flip side, if you're a RAP head and that's ALL you listen too then you might even love these speakers because midrange is not the name of the game with RAP. I have heard other Bose systems and most of them sound quite good. Not sure what happened here but Bose is not living up to their name with this system. I took it back to Best Buy and they politely refunded my money no questions asked."

"I waited till Black Fraiday for it to go down in price- anxiously! The sound is clean,dynamic, and handles much, much more range than you would imagine. For this price you really won't be able to tell it apart from many 5 speaker systems. The only problem is that it appears to be configured for anice computer system because of the shorter length of cables to the base. Even with one extention the sound is really nice. If you can't justify a full blown audio extravaganza for your movie/HD/Bluray needs- this threesome will do you till the economy matches your dream sound room.- DK"

"I returned these speakers after owning them for 2 weeks. I found the sound to be fair at best and certainly not worth the $250 price tag. The biggest problem for me was the total lack of mid range. Yes the speakers provide good treble and the sub does crank out a lot of bass but in the end that is what you hear, treble and bass - no mid range at all. There are better options out there like another reviewer suggested the Klipsch are far superior sounding and a lot less money."

"I bought these speakers because I don;t have a ton of space but still wanted good sound quality. They look great on my desk, I couldn't be happier with their appearance. However if I want to crank up the sound it doesn't sound as nice as it does at lower volumes. I have been tweaking the volume of the subwoofer for awhile and I still can't find that sweet spot.....I would recommend the Klipsch package that BBY sells instead. The sub volume control is right on the speaker. also, the other thing I love about it is the hockey puck shaped volume control, its my favorite part about it."

"I brought these speakers in my third attempt! I first got myself the Companion 2 only to return it at Sams Club and get the Companion 3. Companion 3 definitely sounded awesome and I was extremely pleased for a couple of days only to find one of the speaker connector was loose enough to keep dropping the sound in one speaker.
I decided to return those as well and this time landed up the Companion 3 Series II from Best Buy and what a buy that turned to be! The Series II is even better than the original companion 3. Easy listening and clear sound. Bass is just right without being boomy.
Now I am super thrilled to listen to all my music sitting in front of my pc. The only downside to these are the speaker cable length. I am not sure why Bose has shorten the length from the original Companion 3. This may not be long enough depending on how far apart you intend to position the speakers.
Overall I am very happy and would recommend these to anyone who is interested in owning great multimedia speakers. Well worth the price."

"i bought these almost a year ago (in august 08 and it is now may 09) and was planning on using them as my speakers for my computer but got a 32" vizio tv. i had to buy a couple longer cables to be able to hook them up to my tv and still be able to use the sound control module. but the sound is phenominal! if used in the proper size and shape room (the two i have used it in are my 20'x15' bedroom and 6'x8' home office) it sounds like a 5.1 surround sound system. (tested it out with "I Am Legend" on the scene where he is driving the mustang) right now my friend has it hooked up to his ps3 on my tv and it sounds great (in fact he likes it so much he is going to buy them when he gets his next paycheck). the only two things that could either be a plus or minus would be that the bass doesnt hit super hard (compared to the 1000 watt 12 inch sub on my other home theater system) and the sound on them carries very very far (i can hear them all over my house and when they were hooked up in my dorm room i could hear them at the other end of the dorm (about 250 feet away). i would definitely recommend these speakers."

"Bought these to replace playing music from my laptop speakers when I'm on it. In addition I wanted a descent set for my bedroom to plug my mp3 player up to. I've always appreciated Bose sound so when I went looking for a set, Bose was my first choice. I didn't do any research, in fact, I picked this set honestly just because it was what was in stock and had a convenient location to plug up my pc and mp3 player. I was able to set it up in about 2 minutes and was very impressed by the sound it put out. It was way better than what I had even expected! This set it more than worth the money, I wish I had bought it years ago! So relaxing to come home and plug and play my music with such great quality sound!"
