Synopsis Imagine flying high above the arctic seas, anxiously awaiting your flight's final descent to dry land. Suddenly, without warning, the plane plummets to the cold and unforgiving water at unimaginable speed. Once the aircraft makes contact, you realize that falling from the skies is only the beginning of this nightmare. Wrenched into Rapture, a doomed city beneath the sea, you come across a rusted bathysphere. There, you learn that this once idealistic society, the brainchild of a hopeful group of scientists, artists and industrialists, now has corpses littering the city limits. Wildly powerful guardians roam the corridors as evil little girls loot the dead, and genetically mutated citizens attempt to ambush you at every turn. Will you be one of the lucky ones to escape this underwater agony alive? Going beyond run-and-gun corridors, monster-clad artificial intelligence and static worlds, Bioshock presents a unique and unpredictable first-person shooter experience in real time. In order to survive an onslaught of assailants, it's imperative that you take control of your world by hacking mechanical devices, capturing security towers and crafting items to protect yourself. Upgrade your weapons and genetically modify your body to evade the grotesque ghouls who are after you. Make meaningful choices and mature decisions to ultimately answer the question: Should you exploit the innocent survivors of Rapture or save them?

A Respite from the Norm
12/10/2007
By paradsecarfrom St. Louis, MO
What's great about it: Graphics, Soundtrack, Story, Originality What's not so great: Fairly easy to complete
"Let's get one thing straight from the beginning: Bioshock is not a particularly difficult game. No enemy will re-spawn when you die and your money and items remain intact even when you don't. Although it may take you a couple of weeks to get through, you will get through it without frustration.
That said, Bioshock is a wonderful ride for those couple of weeks you become immersed in the world of Rapture. The graphics, audio, and original soundtrack are breathtaking. The story leaves nothing to be desired and you will find yourself emotionally attached to the various characters you encounter.
Because the game is so unique you will find yourself wanting to go back and put together the story all over again to catch the missing pieces from the first time around. In addition, and without giving anything away, there are different endings to the game depending on decisions you make as you play."

What's great about it: Creepy, Fast and Fun What's not so great: A little reptitive
"If you like fast action with great art detail, and an overall creepy tone, this is the game for you. It's the Winner of G4's best game award and it's well deserved. I'm sick of games where the developers haven't put any thought in the plot and gameplay and this was a true gem."

What's great about it: Graphics, Story, Weapons What's not so great: Nothing
"This is a really well designed game. The graphics are exceptional, there are a lot of areas to explore, the weapons are fun without being an overpowering part of the experience, I just hope that the game doesn't end too soon.
Among the graphics are a lot of flowing water and underwater scenes, these can be very difficult to design, and they're exceptionally well done."

What's great about it: Graphics, Soundtrack, Enemies What's not so great: repetative
"This is one of the best game I have played in years. The graphics of the undersea world are stunning. The soundtrack to the game pulls you right back into the 1950's. The enemies are relentless, you can try and run from them like in other games...but in Bioshock they will hunt you down! After a few hours of the game though it can feel somewhat repetative. Even with the repetativeness this game is a must have for Xbox360 owners."

What's great about it: Immersive, gorgeous experience; best voice cast for a video game What's not so great: Occasional slowdown; can be glitchy
"I doubt the term "first-person" has ever been taken so literally in a video game than in Bioshock. You really become the protagonist Jack, from his dramatic planecrash through every horrific discovery he makes in the underwater metropolis he's forced to habitate. Even though you never see his face (nor his feet for that matter) it's hard not to feel every plunge of the syringe containing fluid vital to exploration and combat to every scare the insane (and insanely powerful) natives of Rapture put into you. This game will make you feel paranoid, guilty, and anxious, yet despite all the negative adjectives, have you ever really felt so human in a video game before? Sure, you'll have superpowers (including being able to comfortably carry eight weapons simultaneously, but such is video gaming), but the humanity is still there, as it will be in all of your superpowered victims, no matter how insane, murderous, and deceitful they are. Besides having a great story and atmosphere, the game plays pretty solidly as well. The only foibles you will encounter are slowdowns (they usually only happen when an creature called a Big Daddy is stomping around with other enemies present), and the occasional pause in frames (sometimes you can be looking at the same screen for a second while your character is moving before the game corrects itself). Pretty minor flaws considering how utterly fantastic the graphics are. And the perfect sound effects probably play the biggest role in this game, as almost all of your enemies are pretty chatty with themselves (I did mention they were insane), and every creak and groan will make you turn around constantly to check if anyone actually used some stealth tactics on you (and some will). I strongly advise the purchase of this game. Enjoy the story (despite it being as disturbing as it is), enjoy exploring virtually a new world, and enjoy just being Jack."

Favorite game of all time
10/20/2008
By JOKERakaTANGO
What's great about it: Immersive story and environment, sometimes scary and disturbing, forces a moral decision that effects the ending What's not so great: Wish it were longer.
"Bioshock is an instant favorite. The retro Gothic tones of the underwater city Rapture will immerse you into a story so good, it's hard to believe its a video game. Most first person shooters are just run and gun. Bioshock is different, half of the fun is learning about the fallen city of Rapture through audio diaries or just plan looking around. Though you can't be too careless just wondering around, splicers and big daddy's roam this territory and certainly don't care for your presence. You'll need Atom to survive this trek and the only way to get it is a little sister. Unfortunately they are protected by big daddy's. Get ready for plot twists and some great under water action. Bring on Bioshock 2."

What's great about it: Excellent story, engrossing environment, very creepy What's not so great: No multiplayer
"This is the first game I can remember that made me feel tense and caught up in the story and the environment as though I were watching a well-crafted piece of cinema or reading excellent literature.
I love first-person shooters, but the genre has become pretty stale with WW2 after WW2 clone. Bioshock managed to take a completely different direction, limiting some gunplay, yet adding with a series of different twists.
I don't find the lack of multiplayer to be a condemning downfall by any means. This iconic game is one of the few games I would recommend as an absolute must play."

What's great about it: Superb graphics, fun gameplay, some make you scream like a little girl moments. What's not so great: No multiplayer is always a con. Storyline was foreseeable.
"Every gamer should own this or have played this. This is a great game with great graphics. The different abilities offer more to the gameplay, and the scary scenes have you creeping around every corner hoping something doesn't pop out at you. Very fun game."

What's great about it: Supurb Storytelling, Haunting Graphics, Good Action What's not so great: Not Terribly Challenging, Single Player Only
"One of the best games I have ever played. It has a great plot. It could have been a major motion picture, but I'm glad its a video game! It only has a single player storyline, but I could play it though again happily."
