What's great about it: Sounds Amazing, works great with my computer and Ipod, Looks hot, sub hits really hard, volume knob is great
What's not so great: NONE!!!

"I bought these Bose Speakers mainly for my computer to watch movies and play games with great sound. I use these speakers to listen to music more than I use my Passanic audio system. I could not ask for a better speaker system. The design bose uses makes it feel like I have 5 speakers in my room. The music or any sound feels like its surround sound when its just 2 speakers and a sub. The sub hits really good, you will really experience movies and game play. I feel like im in the action."

What's great about it: Good speaker for music
What's not so great: Consistent and quality for game and video

"I haven't read any review before buying this speaker. I bought it after listened the demo at Bose store and Bestbuy store.
When I first plugged it in, and tried itune to hear some music, I loved it. Quality sound was so good. Deep and nice. Perfect.
I turned on the video, and I felt bad right away. It added noise and static sound in addition to the movie sound. (I try both Transformer and Tokyo Drift). I tried again with the Bose home theater system(used with DVD player) and no sound like that exist. I unplugged the speaker, restarted comp. and tried with built-in speaker and no noise or static exist in the movie sound.
I tried some games with this speaker and the only game that this Bose speaker didn't give noise or static beside the original sound was COD 4-modern warfare.
One last problem was consistent usage of the speaker. After I tried two DVDs, closed Win Media player (with Vista). Turned on Win Media for another CD and this speaker went dead. No sound, no feed back, nothing. I unplugged USB cable and the only way to get built-in speaker work was restart comp.
I hope that it is only due to a single manufacture-defected unit that I so unlucky to get but not happen to any other Bose component 5. Still thinking about get a replacement to see if thing will be better.

Great Product, worth the money! Bose at its best.   09/17/2008
By TheMax from san antonio, tx

What's great about it: Sound, DUH! perfect sound through and through
What's not so great: no base dial on voulume control, no biggie though really.

"Had a boston acoustics unit for years that was amazing, this Bose unit is the only equivilent or better. I had bought the Bose Companion 3 first, DONT WASTE UR MONEY ON THE COMPANION 3, IT DISTORTS EVEN ON LOW VOLUME AND IS TOO SMALL! Just spend the extra money ($100 or so) for the Companion 5 and you'll be happy i promise. Base is good, speakers are perfect, volume comtrol is just as percise. Makes all of your music sound brand new again. And its LOUD! (only Companion 5). USB makes for absolutely percise delivery."

Solution=Bose   08/15/2008
By fonzonater from Tracy, CA

What's great about it: Easy connection, clarity, best substitute for surround sound speakers
What's not so great: Felt strange connecting with usb and not utilizing my awesome sound card.

"Wow, I have never heard speakers like these, this was a true compliment to my new computer. I have a blu-ray drive in my computer and with these speakers it felt like being in a theatre. I recommend like any other speakers that you gradually raise the volume to let them warm up before you blast them. Worth every dollar, I will not be replacing these babies for a long long time."

Amazing Product   08/02/2008
By Carbone from Cheshire, CT

What's great about it: Easy, Great Sound, Bose Quality, Usable on TV
What's not so great: Are you kidding? No cons.

"This product is amazing. The Sound is so good. Once you put it on you can hear how much better your music and any thing that comes out of those speakers sound. I bought this product for my dorm room, I use it for my computer and with a 10 dollar y-jack you can use it with your tv too. Dont worry about the difference between analog and digital sound because it sounds amazing on the tv. Plus the speakers are shielded so they are ok to put next to a tv. These speakers are just simply amazing. It really is worth the price!"

AWESOME... But plug it into a HUB   07/02/2008
By surfinsaxangel02 from Houston, TX

What's great about it: Great sound, great investment
What's not so great: Does not work plugged into direct USB port

"I had to figure out why the BOSE speakers weren't working when i plugged it directly into my system... UNTIL i went searching on the internet... and found the solution.

You HAVE to use a USB Hub in order for these babies to work to their full potential. Mostly because they use ALOT of power. I plugged them directly in an 8 port HUB and now they are working just fine without any distortion and some killer sound....

GET THESE IF YOU WANT TO MAKE YOUR NEIGHBOR'S WALLS RUMBLE!

What's great about it: loud as you want, clear as a bell
What's not so great: base a bit strong for apartment living

"These were worth every penny. Less space and sounds like high quality stereo system only better because they play right off my itunes. I don't think it is very easy to blow these. I've had them at full blast several times and they still sound great. Extra money but well spent. I'm pretty much obsessed..."

What's not so great: None

"This product is amazing. Paired up with my Soundblaster X-Fi sound card, you can pretty much completely customize the speakers to sound the way you want. Like your at a concert hall, or in a movie theater or just to get great sound while playing a game. It's expensive...but it's a Bose. Great Sound!   03/18/2008
By Dade from Texas

What's great about it: Easy setup, Wonderful sound for the size
What's not so great: USB connection, a bit pricey

"I have several Bose systems in my home, the Bose 3-2-1 Theater System, Bose Lifestyle 28 Theater System, Over Ear Noise Cancelling Headphones, and now the Companion 5 Computer speakers. These live up to Bose quality sound. I have had them now about 3 months so I have used them quite a lot. I listen to mp3 music almost everytime I sit and use the computer. I watch little TV. These speakers sound awesome. Set up was a breeze, read the manual FIRST... be patient, setup can be a bit slow (my Dell computer is 1 year old) at least it was on my system. The initial setup and setting the configeration in your sound systems Control Panel was easy using the instructions. The sound will "blow you away". The only thing I dont like is the USB connection (and they are a bit pricey). It's nice now, but you are not able to use these speakers on a stand alone mp3 player or portable cd player (at least I dont know how to hook them up). Other than that small detail, these speakers are great sounding. I listen to Big Band, 60's-80's Rock, Classical, a little country, and Bluegrass. No matter what I listen to they excell! WAY TO GO BOSE!!!! Im my humble opinion, if you can afford them, you cant go wrong with these speakers."

Trippy little system...   02/27/2008
By Blindspot from Hagerstown, MD

What's great about it: Excellent soundstage performance!
What's not so great: (obviously)Not TRUE 5.1...

"Having two computers, I figured the best solution was having two sets of speakers! After already being blown away by the precursor Companion 3s, I figured I'd pick these up for the machine I'd be doing my primary gaming and movie watching on. For music, I'd stick with the 3s, plain and simple. These speakers plug in by USB use a 'TrueSpace' processor that recreates a 5.1 soundstage with dual driver satellites. It works great for games and movies, but almost makes music sound a little TOO spacious. The sound QUALITY I'd say is right on par with the 3s, but the QUANTITY is much greater! The woofer is a little larger, and the 2 extra drivers definately create a convincing 'surround sound effect' even if a Dolby signal is not present! While I wouldn't compare this to a true 5.1 system (as it only has 2 satellites), I will say that for what it is, it ROCKS!!"

Go with Companion 3   02/10/2008
By joco

What's great about it: Bose Quality
What's not so great: Too Expensive

"Well for the last few years I have owned the pre-cursor to the Companion 3 speakers and LOVED them. So when I got my new computer I figured I would upgrade to the Companion 5 and after listening to them at a Bose store I thought they would be a great upgrade. Boy was I wrong!!
Upon listening to them at home I couldnt stand them, they sounded way too processed, sure they had a big soundstage but it all sounded very fake, like turning on a bunch of processed effects. So I returned them and purchased the Companion 3s and they were much better since they dont have the processed soundstage.
If you want the processed soundstage just download the SRS WOW.
The Companion 5's are not audiophile quality while the 3's are.

Do your self a Favor.   01/30/2008
By 1Ryan1 from Florida

What's great about it: Anything you can imagine.
What's not so great: People who can't afford it try to ruin it for other people.

"Right now while writing this review I am listening to Candide Overture by Leonard Bernstein. I have probably listened to this song three or four times in the three weeks I have owned the system. Every single time I listen to this I am amazed. In fact every song or anything channeled through this system is amazing.
I am also the proud owner of an HP Dv6000. As some of you might know Hp computers come whith altec lansing speakers built in. Quite frankly they suck. I swear they achieve about three decibels. So anyways in my infinite wisdom I decided that I would buy some good computer speakers. At first I thought of Logitec, Klipsch ect. but then I thought of bose. I didn't want to spend $400 dollars on a system that was so badly reviewd on some sights. Who would? So i went to my local Best Buy and tried out the demo. It put the bad reviews out of thier misery. But what if the demo was just tweeked to sound great dispite the speakers weaknesses. It wasn't i decided to at least try it out for 30 days. I was not let down or misled in any way. It is nothing like some people would have you believe it is nothing short of awsome.
So do yourself a favor at least try it out and see it for yourself.

A:B comparison leaves no doubt   01/30/2008
By Rosebuds from Los Angeles, CA

What's great about it: Fantastic clarity and soundstage
What's not so great: pricey

"Good things cost money and the Companion 5s are no exception to this. After purchasing the 5s, I read many reviews that stated the Logitecs were as good if not better, and for less than half the cost, especially if one's main interest was music instead of movies, which represents my primary use. So, I went out and bought a set of the Logitech Z-2300 2.1 speakers, hooked them up to my iMac and did an old-school audiophile A:B comparo -- having both systems connected simultaneously, and switching instantly between the two systems as the music was playing. I went down my iTunes list and chose a variety of music, for tests of rock, jazz, old, new, vocals, instrumentals, until I was satisfied with my scope of test material. The verdict is this -- there was really no comparison in sound quality, the Bose had much better high-end clarity, better soundstage and separation. I could audibly locate the Logitec satellites, but the Bose created a wide soundstage that often had me looking over to where there were no speakers, to find out how the sound could possibly be coming from that spot. Instrumental separation on the Bose was such that I could audibly locate things better than the Logitecs, and this didn't change as I moved my head from left to right. The Logitecs weren't bad, but are very position and angle dependent. Volume on both systems were good, bass was good on both, but the Bose subwoofer module is about 50%-60% of the size of the Logitech. Both systems are well designed, and the Logitech has a bass-level knob on the desktop remote control, while the Bose knob is on the back of the subwoofer. The Bose uses USB, while the Logitec plugs into the audio out of your computer.
I would consider myself unbiased here, as I was actually hoping the Logitecs were equal so I could return the Bose and pocket $150+. But after hearing it for myself, I'll be returning the Logitecs. If you're not of the mind to spend $399 on computer speakers, you probably won't be unhappy with the Logitecs. If you're an audiophile like me, then you'll part with the money.
Just a note, I didn't test the Logitec surround sound models with rear speakers, as I have nowhere to place them in my office setup.

Great Speakers   01/02/2008
By WindyCity from Chicago, IL

What's great about it: Incredible clarity and sound
What's not so great: None

"I bought these to replace a 12 year old pair of Sony's that were given to me and there is an immediate difference. I could not believe how good my CD's sound and I'm pleasantly pleased that I can connect my iPod directly into the volume control. This is great if you don't feel like firing up the PC. Best of all is the speakers don't take up much space at all!!!"

The great sound you expect from Bose   10/07/2007
By HouseHaverhcez from Columbus, OH

What's great about it: Bose-quality sound from your computer, USB Connectivity eliminates system noise on some systems
What's not so great: USB Connectivity can sometimes cause complications in sound generation, Expensive

"Bose Companion 5 Multimedia Speakers are a luxurious addition to any computer system used for listening to music, watching TV or movies. As expected, this speaker system delivers rich, exceptionally clear, Bose-quality sound. I use my speakers with a Dell laptop through a USB port and use Windows Media Player (WMP) as my primary music player. I save all of my personal CDs in high-quality WMP files and the results from the Bose speakers are crisp, clear, deep, rich sound.
The volume/mute control pod is a great feature for adjusting the level for different music types, and the quick Mute allows for fast response when answering the phone. I keep the control pod right next to my phone which reduces fumbling when I receive a call.
The USB input allows for clear, digital sound signals to be processed by your Bose speakers. This is particularly useful when your computer is not well shielded internally causing whirrring or whinig noises in your sound output. The passing of the digital signal eliminates these noises.
Alternatively, you can plug your iPod or other MP3 player directly into the system through your control pod, using a stereo mini-plug.
If you want the best sound from your computer system, this is the best computer-based system to purchase.
Sometimes when booting up my computer the USB signal gets "stuck" which generates an annoying mid-level tone from the speakers. Once the Windows system is fulled booted, the problem automatically goes away.
When Windows Vista was released, the Windows Control Panel functions for the speakers changed and Bose was very responsive to assisting me choose the correct settings for my speakers.
