Nintendo Wii

Model number: RVLSWC/RVLSWFSP | SKU: 8008559

Designed for kids ages five to 95, the revolutionary Nintendo Wii isn't just a next-generation system — it's an all-generation system. The innovative minds at Nintendo discovered that the evolution of gaming has made video games very complex, and those who once enjoyed playing games with their entire families have become alienated. The Wii is pronounced "we" for a reason — it symbolizes Nintendo's driving philosophy: this system is for everyone. Whether you're a hardcore gamer, a casual player or a grandparent who'd like to play a game with your grandchild, the Wii will provide you with a wondrous experience that returns gaming to simpler times while also defining a new age of game development. In addition to amazingly realistic next-generation graphics and a variety of outstanding titles to choose from, the true magic of the Wii starts right in the palm of your hand — the controller. The unique Wii Remote controller is wireless and motion-sensitive, allowing you to use everyday motions to simulate the motions in your game. The Nunchuk controller attaches to the Wii Remote and uses an analog stick along with motion-sensing technology to assist in character movement. Imagine yourself in the thrilling world of Wii Sports, the awesome, action-packed sports game included with your Wii console. Using your Wii Remote controller, you'll chase down powerful tennis serves, add touch to your golf swing to avoid tricky sand traps, overpower speeding fastballs to knock them out of the baseball park and more. The Wii Channel Menu, which is the first screen that will appear on your TV, provides a simple user interface that includes the Video Console Channel, News Channel, Forecast Channel, Photo Channel, Internet Channel, Wii Message Board and the Wii Shop Channel. Using the Mii Channel, you can even create playable caricatures of yourself called Miis that you can use in a variety of Wii applications. With an innovative motion-sensitive controller and the Wii Channel Menu, the Wii will truly make you feel less like just a player and more like you're really part of the game.

What's great about it: Great Fun for the entire family. Can bring lots of laughs & you don't realize you're being more active.
What's not so great: I couldn't find anything not so great unless you want to count the sore muscles .. It is a lot of fun

"I purchased my Wii when they first came out so I have had mine quite a while. It is durable because I have tossed it in a bag and took it back and forth on several trips. This Game System is perfect for younger kids, all the way up to anyone who can just move their arms. It is a fun way to keep you moving, without just the boring everyday walks. I can actually build up a sweat in a game of tennis and have my heart rate up as if I am jogging. There is so many different activities and a NEVER ENDING supply of games. I Absolutely Love It Love it Love it!!!!!"

"I really like the Wii gaming system! Mostly because alot of the games get you off the couch and moving. It is really easy to set up. Pretty much a no brainer. And making your Mii character is fun. It is a very popular gaming system, and there are plenty of reasons why. I would definately recommend this system to anyone who wants more of an interactive gaming experience."

What's great about it: Excellent price, great first party games, very sturdy, low-profile makes it easy to setup anywhere.
What's not so great: 480p, Pro-logic audio, many weak third party games, too many peripherals, gets warm if not setup vertically.

"First of all, I love Nintendo and love the Wii. I've owned one since just a few months after launch and have gotten a lot of use out of it.

Depending on the game, the motion controllers are actually an innovation, not a gimmick. And the size of it is perfect; fits in anywhere.

I would highly recommend this gaming system to anyone. And I could wax poetic about how much I love Zelda, the Virtual Console, etc. Instead, I'm going to point out a number of pitfalls to avoid when choosing the Wii:

1) Peripherals. The Wii itself is practically bargain priced by today's standards, but once you throw in wheels and zappers and boards and classic controllers and WiiMotionPlus, you find yourself with a rather expensive pile of plastic, and that's before you've even bothered with hits like Guitar Hero or Rock Band.

Believe me, I have this pile and finally just filled a box and put it in the closet on a need-to-use basis.

Most of the add-ons actually do serve a purpose for certain games (I'm actually a fan of the WiiFit board, FYI), but for such a simple, small system, it takes up a surprising amount of room. And the cost gets to the point you could have afforded one of those "other" consoles a couple times over.

Unfortunately this is unavoidable as your Wii library increases, just be careful of stuff like the Wii Zapper and unless you own a mansion and have the room, don't bother with those third-party sports equipment attachments; the official Nintendo stuff takes up enough room as it is.

2) Shovelware/weakening library. Do Nintendo, yourself, and everyone else a favor, do not buy $30 third party games with bad reviews just because they look "fun". There are many gems in the Wii library of games that alone justify buying a Wii. But the shovelware games make the whole family look bad by association; shun them.

That being said, the quality titles are few and far between. I've only purchased two Wii games in the last year (2009: Wii Sports Resort and WiiFit Plus), so unless 2010 comes with some heavy hitters, Wii may have its swan song sooner than we think.

3) 480p. This didn't used to bother me, but then I got an Xbox 360 and a PS3 and the difference on an HDTV is clear: 480p is blurry. Even DVD's look rather "pixely" once you've seen the HD comparison, so there's nothing to be done about this until the next Nintendo console.

Just make sure you spring for the Wii component cable if you're hooking this up to any HDTV, because as bad as 480p is, it's practically crystal clear compared to 480i.

4) Pro-logic audio. Nintendo has some of the most memorable video game music around, yet they're still pumping it out like it's 1998. Next time around they need a digital 5.1 output: it's crisper sounding and can only serve to make their titles even more epic.

5) Heat. The Wii gets anywhere from very warm to downright hot when placed in a normal, horizontal position with standby mode on. I have mine installed vertically now and things are lot better. If you're planning to install it horizontally, consider just turning off standby mode and just get your update notices when you turn on the Wii.

---

Overall this is an excellent console, just some things associated with it have gotten out of hand over the years, and if you've invested in high-end home theater equipment, the video output and audio quality can be a disappointing (though, not detrimental) drawback.

I recommend buying it in general, just be careful what you buy FOR it.

What's great about it: I have to say the funnest system!
What's not so great: Nothing!

"There's not a bad thing about the wii system and when you buy anything electronic you take the chance of the system breaking and it happens to every one but the graphics and the sound are great when hooked up with the component and you chance the settings to hd it looks and sounds so much better and I have a blast when Im playing it. Some people say its bad I know the graphics aren't as sharp as the PS3 or the XBOX 360 but what people don't know is that when you add movement to a game that's tough to do and I have to say when they came out with the wii I was amazed and thought maybe it would be boring but it's actually a lot of fun for the family and keeps pretty much anyone entertained for hours I own the PS3 and not the WII but the wii is an amazing system period and not a bad thing about it!"

"My husband (age 67) is a stroke survivor. He uses the Wii and its accompaning sports games and wii resort as physical therapy. He absolutely loves it--so much more fun than the 10 reps of this or than. It is also easy to judge his improvement in arm strength, muscle control etc by the scores. Could not have asked for a better solution for his issues.

It also provides an opportunity for him to compete with his grandson and discuss games etc.

What's great about it: Just one fun machine!
What's not so great: minor sync issues

"I bought my WII with the fitness bundle as a Christmas gift for my wife and me. It's the best money I've spent this year! We immediately started the exercises with the fitness board, and, yes it does work! At least for us. We are now faithful daily particpants in at least three of the aerobic type exercises. My only complaint with the Wii is that for some of the excersises with music, some of the steps you make on the Wii board are not recorded properly. At this point I am not sure if it's the disc or the board? It's a minor thing that wasn't bad enough to take points off the overall rating.

We have the sports disk but are hooked on only one of the games--bowling. But what fun it is! The sounds, pin action, and way one can control the ball are JUST like real bowling! Our routine now is to bowl a game before bed! There is also a bowling training game that is way tooooo cool.

If you are looking for a family oriented game--but one that is as much fun for the adult kids as it is for the real kids, then get the Wii. WOW!
