Great tool - do your homework...

What's great about it: Easy to set up with just a little technical knowledge What's not so great: User security/access control stinks
"Have two 500GB Seagate drives with 400GB RAID 1 and 100GB JBOD (Just a Big Old Drive). Works wonderfully on my 100mbps wired network. No problems (yet) with Vista Home Premium.
Have not used anything other than storage on this box, but setup on that was easy after upgrading the firmware.
User access/control is not well-designed - access to files on my system is wide-open for all users, but that is fine. If I had multiple users, it would be difficult to setup secure storage for each from what I read in the manual and on the web.
Upgrade the firmware BEFORE putting any data on the drive(s) to avoid data loss. The firmware upgrade that I did required reformatting the drive(s)."

"Very easy to set up with your router without the use of software. Excellent for backing up large amounts of data with YOUR preference of 1 or 2 SATA hard drives. Very nice item!!"

What's great about it: Fairly fast, well built. What's not so great: Front cover comes off easier than I'd like.
"Have one, ... Works VERY well. No special software required on every PC, like some (Thanks Western Digital! I like your drives, but not your "externals," ... anymore..) Using this with WD drives, works just fine. Did do a firmware update. (Would recommend...)"

"I have no significant complaints about this product. I have it set up on a gigabit network with 2 Western Digital wd2500ks 250gb hdds in raid 0 for a total of approx 500gb. It works darn near flawlessly. The setup was pretty user friendly with explanations for all the options which could easily be understood by someone with very little computer knowledge. Knowledge of networking is a necessity to get some of the more complicated features up and running such as the ftp server. The read and write speeds are fast enough for me even on the wireless half of my network. The iTunes server works perfectly so any computer on the network can play any of the songs stored on the dns323 simply by opening iTunes. One annoyance is that whenever the power goes out I have to manually restart it and its at the other end of the house, but I'm about to put it on a battery backup so that problem should be for the most part solved. The dns323 is virtually silent and is a great step up from its predecessor the dsm-g600."

Great NAS device

"I am using this on my home network for backing up the household computers and photo storage. It is an excellent product that runs off of SATA drives rather than IDE and allows RAID setup. I am running RAID 1 with 2 WD Harddrives, setup was a breeze. The GIGABIT connection on this devise connected to my DIR-655 Gigabit router allows super access speed. The built in USB print server, ftp server and itunes server are all nice features. I have had no problems since the initial setup, I did do a firmware upgrade prior to the initial setup."
