What's great about it: Picks up what other vacuums leave behind
What's not so great: power head attaches to the wand instead of directly to the hose.
"My wife and I tested the DC17 against the Ball versions, DC24 and DC25. Admittedly, I did not test this unit against other brands. I found the Ball units to be maneuverable and generally lightweight, but heavier on the wrist at the handle than the DC17. The DC17 has its weight distributed at the wheels in the base, so it feels like you use less effort to propel and steer it.
Suction was great. We have a yellow lab and had just vacuumed the previous day with our old Kenmore canister unit and the carpet "looked" clean. The DC17 picked up way more hair and other fine material that was embedded in the rug. It did not clog. Filtering was phenominal as there was no "dog hair" smell.
Emptying the canister was a breeze. It took a little while to figure out how/where to attach the power head to use on the furniture, but this, too, worked like a charm. The hose was more than long enough to safely reach the top steps at the 2nd floor.
The assembly and operational documentation was purely graphical and was mostly intuitive. However, it did not illustrate the use of the power head attachment. Further, the connection of the power head attachment does not jive with the photograph on the carton which shows it connected directly to the hose without the extension wand in place. An online search solved the issue and it gets connected to the extension wand instead."

Best Vacuum We've ever had!

What's great about it: best suction - picks up what other machines leave behind
What's not so great: Hose extension is short and somewhat cumbersome to use.
"We have a cleaning service. I go over the carpets 2 days later with the Dyson and it picks up more dust than the professional machine they bring with them. It isn't cheap, but for how well it works and how long it lasts, it's well worth the money."

The Animal is a Monster

What's great about it: Amazing cleaning power, and very easy to operate.
"My wife use to vacuum every other day and had even vacuumed the day before I bought her the Animal. The first time she used it she filled the whole dust compartment. We were only going through a bag once every 2 months. To me this means the old vacuum wasn't picking anything up. We have a dog that sheds and you wouldn't even notice now. This thing is great and very easy to operate, and there is never a dust smell in the air."

What's great about it: Can pick up a lot of debris on carpet/rugs
What's not so great: The vacuum is super heavy and doesn"t work well on stairs for our pet hair
"I was super excited to get this vacuum as I had heard a lot of good things. The good things: picks up a ton of pet hair and it seems to work better than our older vacuum for most of the areas of our house. Strong suction.
The bad things: It doesn't work well on the steps (Oon each side of the steps we have at least 1 inch that doesn't even get touched by the attachments). The vacuum is super heavy and difficult to use when you are pregnant.
Overall, we are sastified with our purchase but want to for worn that you may want to keep your old vacuum if it works well on the steps."

Great vacuum

What's great about it: This vacuum picks up everything.
What's not so great: Heavy, Heavy, Heavy! I wanted a vacuum that I could take up and down steps but you can't with this vacuum.
"Love this vacuum for what it picks up. In a word everything, but it's so very heavy that you can't move it from floor to floor like I had wanted. I have 3 levels in my home and it's just not easy carrying this from level to level. If you only have one level then buy this vacuum casue you will love what it does."

What's great about it: Design, cleaning power, easy to use
"I'm very pleased with this vacuum. Got it on sale on Black Friday, otherwise probably would've had to go with something cheaper....
The design is unique and requires some acquaintance, but its like riding a bike. Once you get it, you're good to go. It's really designed to make your job easier.The things you usually do with a vacuum are now much easier and natural....no manipulation!
I have an 85lb lab that sheds year round....alot (in my opinon)...I can't believe how much hair this machine picks up, its many times more than my previous vacuum!"

Dyson does lose suction quicker then other vacums

What's great about it: the looks, ends there
What's not so great: the ergonomics, the constant cleaning it needs, the flexibility of the wand
"when they say it does not lose suction ever, they forget to mention that it wont lose suction if you take the thing apart every 2 months to clean it, and then you cant even get into the vortex which is sealed in and full of dirt. There are 2 filters in the vacum which get so dirty withing 2 moths, that they must be taken out and cleaned, which means you have no vacum for 2 days because you need to soak it over night, then leave it to dry for a full day. The other problem is the want doesn't work unless it is fully extedned which makes it a real pain to vacum furniture, and it is not really flexible enough to use the wand in corners without the whole vacum tipping over. I am not a hater in general and never write reviews, but I am so upset at how poor this vacum performs, I had to write something. I would suggest any normal $100 vacum over this."

"This summer has been the worst shedding season for my cat, and my old vacuum just didn't quite seem to cut it. I was using a combination of a inexpensive vacuum and a carpet shampooer, which was always picking up way too much dirt and hair that the vacuum left behind. So I made the investment in this Dyson. I have used it a couple times and the carpet never looked cleaner. The high powered suction and it seems the brush is stronger and faster also leaving the carper fluffier. Its incredibly simple to use (almost too simple as I kept trying to make things more complex with it) and for a heavy machine, it moves with ease. The biggest downside was the instruction manual was quite week, really with only a few pictures. So it took a bit longer to figure out how to use it, empty it and using the tools for the first time. But once figured out it is quite intuitive and useful."

"This vacuum is great, it makes our carpet look brand new. We bought it around the time we got our dog and it does a great job. People can pay 100 to 200 for a vacuum but this one is worth every penny you get what you pay for. All the attachments are great and the wand that is built into the vacuum is great.
I definitely recommend this to everybody. I know it sucks to spend the money upfront but worth it over time. I have had my vacuum for a year and still working like i bough it yesterday."

What's great about it: Quiet motor, great suction capacity, easy to maneuver
What's not so great: Not sure what one of the attachments is for! -Doesn't explain in the manual what each one does.
"After reading all of the online reviews AND listening to both a friend and my chiropractor rave about their Dyson Animals (my friend has had hers for over 6 years and it's still working as good as new), I decided to go into my local Best Buy to see the different Animal models and choose the one that was best suited for me. The Best Buy rep was helpful and I chose the DC17 because it had more attachments to use and came with the carpet floor care powder and spray.
Opening the box, I pulled everything out and quickly assembled the machine. It's fairly self explanatory, but there are some visual instructions to help you.
Vacuum capability: I then get started on my family rec room. I was really surprised at how easily it adapted automatically to the changing floor settings-from tile in the foyer to carpet in the rec room. I just needed to add the brush function when switching to the carpet, which is a fingertip touch control next to the power button-no need to bend down. It is also very lightweight and quiet-I expected it to be loud and noisy and heavy-neither of which were true.
Okay, on the carpet-I was amazed at how deep it went into the rug! The amount of dirt/pet hair/dust (I am a very clean person, so I was appalled to see what my 2-year old non-Dyson vacuum was missing) that came up! We don't even wear shoes in the house, so I was surprised to find that I nearly filled the entire canister on this one room alone. Ick! To ensure the room was really clean, I used the telescopic wand which reached 16' (a plus) and dusted all blinds, ceiling corners, recessed lights, fan, etc. I'm petite, so the 16' made it easier for me to do these height-necessity jobs.
Multi-surface floors with main vacuum: I then vacuumed the bathroom next to the rec room-it has both tile and small area rugs. I was curious to see if the Dyson would suck up the rug as my other vacuum would have and/or would I need to switch to a different tool. Nope-left the carpet where it was and allowed me to vacuum both types without a problem.
Vacuuming stairs: I then went to the main stairwell which has 20 steps. You leave the vacuum on the ground floor, then take the telescopic wand and vacuum each individual stair using one of the two stair attachments-I used the microhead tool. I was able to get every stair but the top two vacuumed WITHOUT moving the main part of the vacuum. This saved my back ((my over vacuum "detaches" but then you have a vacuum banging at your hip and it gets ho as well as is bulky). I then picked up the Dyson main part and carried it to the upstairs landing to finish the last two stairs.
Cord length: 35'-I own a townhouse, so only plugging in once to do an entire set of rooms is awesome.
Only negative-I don't what the one attachment is for-it doesn't say in the booklet what any of them are for and the website for Dyson does not tell me either. A Truly minor complaint for such a great value!"

"This is the best vacuum I have ever owned. I had bought area rugs from ebay and when they arrived (I kidd you not) they were covered in "grime". I vacuumed with my dirt devil and had no idea what it wasn't picking up until I used my dyson. If case there are others out there who are having trouble attaching the misc. brushes...on the handle lift up the grey cap and pull up (all the way) the red "tube" when it reaches the end it automatically detaches from the vacuum - put on whatever attachments you want - when done, stick it back on, push down the red "tube" close the grey cap. That's it - which is why I believe directions aren't listed! I felt like such an idiot-LOL!"

"We have had our Dyson D17 for 2 years now and LOVE IT!!!! It is the best purchase we have ever made. We have a golden retreiver and 3 cats and the hair that the vacuum can pick up is amazing! The only time we had an issue it wasn't really an issue.... our dog had chewed up a baseball into a million pieces and I accidently vacuumed up one of the pieces that was a little too large for the hand piece. I was able to get right on line and figure out how to take my Dyson apart to get the piece out... it was a piece of cake! Anyone that has animals should get this vacuum, it truly is the best vacuum on Earth!"

"I've had this for 3 years and it's been out to repair 2 times for almost a month each time. it makes grinding noises and you have to turn the unit off and back on so t will stop. had problems with the brushes and they have been replaced. I have 3 shorthaired dogs and that seems to be a problem. It does not pick up very good and I have to go over and over the same spots several times. I paid a higher price for this unit, but must say that my old, cheaper hoover windtunnel did a much better job. I would not buy this product again, mabey I have just got a bad one. It just has to go out to service and being without a vaccuum for a month is not a good thing."

What's not so great: Others have complained about price but compared to other vacs at much higher prices, this is the best!!
"Wow! I have been an Electrolux owner for years. At $800.00 back in 1994 I thought that was high for a vacuum, oh and you have to buy bags, filters and get it serviced at least every 2 years at a cost of $200.00.......but since the 2nd Electrolux passed away I have had another cheaper vacuum($200.00). It lasted about 2 years and I really didn't like it.......It lost suction in maybe 20 passes. The Animal is just that! No loss of suction, and I had vacuumed with the cheaper vacuum just before I brought the Dyson in. Well after emptying the Dyson 5 times, I realized Whoa the old vacuum REALLY did lose suction!!. I have allergies which were out of control for the last 4 months. Since the Dyson no allergies. My nose,my pets,and my carpets LOVE Dyson!! No service issues, no filters to buy and no bags to buy. Do not be afraid to spend a very economical price for this vacuum . It is worth it!!"
