Couldn't live without it02/10/2008
By allergygirlfrom Washington, DC
What's great about it: easy to maneuver, cleans thoroughly, great for people with allergies What's not so great: price
"This is totally worth the money. After vacuming with my old vacum cleaner I went ahead and vacumed with the dyson and still got more dirt out. The cleaning sponge particles that you can buy as well with it is fantanstic. It takes out stains- even very old ones. I no longer have a lot of the allergy symptoms I used to have in the past."
What's great about it: really doesn't lose suction; works on all kinds of floors What's not so great: sometimes it be a pain to clean out the canister; telescoping wand can be awkward to use, and of course: PRICE
"I did a fair amount of research before taking the plunge into the high priced vacuum cleaner world, but after half a dozen cheaper vacuums that just ended up in the trash, I finally decided to upgrade. I'm very glad I did. Now I can't say that this vacuum never loses suction, but it hasn't so far for me. The first time I used it, I was amazed at all the dust/gunk/etc that the Dyson pull up out of my supposedly clean carpets. I was hooked after that.
There are more than enough people going into detail on how great this vacuum is, so I'll just say that I'm very happy with my purchase. A couple minor complaints: the telescoping wand has a very thick and cumbersome hose that can be very awkward to manipulate around while vacuuming--it definately takes some getting used to. Also, when the canister gets very full, it can end up being a little messy when you try to empty it--in fact it can be something of a chore between emptying and washing the canister, knocking or blowing out all the dust stuck in the nooks and crannies of the "cyclone" thingy, etc. If you can handle that and the price, then I say go for it."
Worth the price01/31/2008

What's great about it: Great pick up, extra attachments, telescoping wand to reach high drapes and cobwebs What's not so great: PRICE, attachments sometimes slip off the hose/wand, no place on board vacuum for extra attachments
"I am one of those few crazy people who actually loves to vacuum, so I did plenty of research before buying this piece of art! I have bought many vacuums during the last 3 years, and every one of them has let me down in one way or another. We go through vacuums very quickly because of the loads of dog hair in our home. My husband and I have three St. Bernard’s as well as wall-to-wall carpeting throughout our two-story home. As you can imagine, we vacuum all the time to keep control of the dog hair! My most recent vacuum (a very expensive Bissell designed to work great in homes with pets) died after only 6 months, and as always, I hit the Internet to search for the best vacuum available. Again and again the Dyson DC17 Animal was at the top of the lists. I still could not justify paying $550 for a vacuum, but I headed to BB to try one just for the heck of it (I ended up vacuuming over half the store to the amusement of other customers and several employees). I immediately bought one and flew home to try it out in my home. The instructions were slightly confusing with mostly pictures rather than written ones, but no major assembly was required. I did notice that there was no place on the vacuum to place the extra attachments (the mini turbine, low floor tool, and Zorb brush). I hit my couches and chairs first with the mini turbine brush attached directly to the hose, and I was amazed at how much hair and fine debris came off; I never had so much come off with any of my other vacuums. I then worked on the carpet in our den where we and the girls hang out the most. I vacuumed less than 1/4 of the 15x12 room when I had to empty the canister. By the time I finished the room, I had filled and emptied the canister four times! After vacuuming, I used a steam carpet cleaner and then vacuumed again once the carpet dried; I filled the canister twice again with the debris that the cleaner had pulled to the surface but not removed! I also noticed that the room smelled fresher and did not have the slightly burnt, acrid aroma that I always noticed coming from our other vacuums. Needless to say, vacuuming now is a satisfying event, and my house is cleaner, smells fresher, and my carpets look nearly new again. I have recommended this vacuum to everyone I know, even if they don’t have pets because it is great in getting the cobwebs in high spaces and for cleaning bits off of hard wood floors, especially in between the tiny grooves in natural hardwood floors."
What's great about it: great suction, easy to push, no filter replacement
"I was very apprehensive to spend this much on a vacuum, but it may be the best purchase I've ever made! With a Golden Retriever and a cat in the house, we needed something that would help with the pet hair. I have never been so impressed with a vacuum cleaner! This thing picked up sooo much stuff trapped in our carpet that I didn't even know was there. It made me sick to see what had been there. This thing is truly amazing and I would highly recommend it to anyone with pets. It's unbelievably easy to move and has a load of attachments for all your needs. The only thing I wish is that it had a removable canister that made it easy to take to the car for more pet hair removal!"
What's great about it: All of it!!!! What's not so great: None In my opinion
"Dyson All the way!!! Best vacuum I have ever owned. I come from a long line of of Kirby owners ( most good new Kirby's run $1550 to $2000 ). I switched based off of recommendations from friends, Quality, Warranty and Performance. It took me 3 months of examining and test trying before I decided. I went through every brand and model imaginable before settling on the Dyson. Here is my thoughts on why. If you spend $100-$170 a year on a vacuum that has to be replaced every year then in a short time ( 2-3 years ) you could have bought a Dyson and saved yourself the time and aggravation. Why buy a vacuum who's performance will start to decline within 3 months of owning it when you can buy one that won't. Yes the Dyson is heavier then other brands that claim they can do as good as a job then the Dyson, but a lighter weight machine is more likely to have parts break because it is too light weight in construction. Again why run a vacuum in all the time under warranty to replace parts. I also recommend buying an extended warranty/service plan ( at least 5 years ) through the dealer you bought it from. With this ( just like a new car ) you can take it in to be serviced regularly at no cost to you to keep your new investment as good as new. I have had my for 3 years and have had no issues!!"
What's great about it: Easy to use, automatic height select, suction, quiet What's not so great: A little heavy
"I had been trying out another vacuum the previous week and used my normal vac to do a test. Needless to say, the trial vac didn't do a good job. So I returned that one and got the dyson to try it out. I figured that since I'd been vacuuming with two vacuums the previous week, it wouldn't pick much up.
Wow was I wrong. It did an amazing job on the carpets. I vacuumed the whole house and had to empty the container numerous times. It's like the other vacuums hadn't done much at all.
Nice vacuum01/17/2008
By djwtarheel1from Atlanta, GA
What's great about it: Does a great job, included accessories, 5 year warranty What's not so great: high price
"I have a Hoover that is beginning to lose its suction, so I took a few weeks to search for a new vacuum. I also should mention that I have pretty bad allergies and of course a dog to make them worse. After talking to a few friends and a family member, I decided to pick up this Dyson (on sale) and simply can't believe the amount of hair and dust it picks up compared to my old Hoover. I admit I was hesitant to get this vacuum because of the price, but after I saw how well it works and the accessories it comes with, I wish I would've picked it up sooner...it really does make a difference...also, the 5 year warranty gives you piece of mind. Nice vacuum."
By far the best vacuum01/17/2008
By RJKMfrom North of Detroit, MI
What's great about it: Everything. What's not so great: None.
"Prior to this purchase, we had a Vax vacuum that we purchased from Best Buy about 2 years ago. The housing on that one shattered around Christmas time and the suction was non-existent so it was the right time to start looking for a new one. Amazingly enough, we picked this model up for $412 last weekend. Apparently, there was like a one or two day sale on-line and my local store matched the on-line price. We vacuumed before we left the house to pick this up. As soon as we got home, we vacuumed again. My wife and I were appalled or impressed depending how you look at it in regards to how much dust, dirt, and dog hair (black lab), that the canister of this vacuum picked up. Unbelievable. Dysons are well worth the price tag, especially when you find them on sale like we did."
Great Vacumn Cleaner01/14/2008
By ssadalfrom Aurora, TX
What's great about it: Really pulls up the dirt and dog hair What's not so great: Non so far
"We built a new house 2 years ago, and the carpet was already showing signs of wear, and with two labs in the house, the amount of dog hair that my other vacumn left behind was terrible. I also have a Miele Pearl (it was A $1000 purchase 8 years ago). The Miele does great on the ceramic and wood floors, but I couldn't believe what the Dyson picked up! Amazing. The carpet looks great!! I'm glad I finally bought this machine. I had been thinking about it for several months, but was hesitant because of one review that some guy wrote stating it shredded his carpet. Anyway, I don't have shredded carpet, and I'm really happy with this vacumn. I would highly recommend it anyone."
worth every penny!12/31/2007
By crazykahluafrom Northglenn, co
What's great about it: Gets all the dirt and pet hair off carpet and leather couch. What's not so great: can't complain
"works great for pet owners, has awesome car attachments. I actually enjoy vacuuming because Its amazing how your floors don't look that dirty till you go to dump the canister and realize how gross the floor was, the five year warranty can't be beat it has lifetime belts as well and lifetime filters!"
Sweet Sucker12/24/2007
By DallasCowboysfrom Plano TX
What's great about it: Sucks up dirt better than any other!!! What's not so great: it is still just a vacuum and means you have to do housework
"Buy one if you want to see what clean carpet really is. We replaced a canister vac with this one and there really is no reason why everyone who has carpet should not have a dyson. buy it now your stupid if you choose another brand canister vac."
Best Vacuum I have used12/18/2007
By Thelvenfrom Madison, WI
What's great about it: Outstanding suction What's not so great: I want to vacuum more
"This is the best vaccum I have ever owned. This is worth the money. Having two cats this is a must. It is like sucking up a cat every single time I vacuum with all of the hair it collects. It is so easy to use, and it is not bulky like th majority of vacuums that are out there. The wand is fantastic. This has really helped reduce the amount of dust getting kicked up in my house. I would recommend this to anyone that is looking for a great vacuum."
What's great about it: power, tools and ease of use What's not so great: none
"I live on a fixed budget and the thought of spending this kind of money on a vacuum didn't make much sense. Now I own one and am completely convinced of the performance. I thought my house was clean until I used this machine and I was proven wrong. Once I saw the suction and pick up power I was shocked. I now vacuum on a whim without any fuss. The kids even want to use it!!!! My family has allergies and I have seen a reduction in the sniffles since I have been using the machine!"
What's great about it: Wow ~ this vacuum works What's not so great: Unhooking wand to free up hose not intuitive; wish the user manual had words not just so so diagrams
"I never thought I'd be excited to vacuum, but the suction for ground in dirt and stains is amazing. It really picks up everything - including pet hair, with ease. I like the 800 phone support, website, parts availability and repairability assurances. Love it, love it, love it!"
What's great about it: Super Suction / Deep Cleaning / Looks Cool / Wife Like it !! What's not so great: Price
"Ok I cant claim I have actually ever pushed the Dyson around the house. I bought it because my wife was always complaining about our old vacuum that was 5 months old and was always breaking. I decided I would go with the Dyson based on the reviews. She loves this machine and has no complaints. It is amazing how much dirt this thing sucks up. It is almost scary. I wish I would have bought this one in the first place. So if you can handle the price and you want to make your wife happy by one.."
What's great about it: I was really excited about it when I bought it What's not so great: does not pick up pet hair but does ruin carpet
"I liked this product because everyone told me that it was a great cleaner. I have a pet and 3 children, so I thought I would replace my current vacuum. After I vacuumed with it, it did pick up more than my previous vacuum, but as I looked in the dirt cup, all I could see were carpet fibers--- basically it made my carpet look horrible because it unwound all the fibers in my carpet... it looks as if this is not from the suction but from the bristles on the brushroll. Also, looking at my carpet, I noticed that it still left pet hair on the floor... I was totally disappointed with this product. For all the great marketing it has, you would think it would be worth the money. I am much happier with my previous vacuum. For the money this vacuum has poor performance."
Merry Christmas11/17/2007
By Corgisandmorefrom Mansfield, Texas
What's great about it: Wow ... it really works What's not so great: detached accessories
"I bought myself an early Christmas present today and I must say I love this machine! As a multipet household on a farm, you can imagine that I go through the Hoover's once a year .... not to mention all the bags you must buy, etc. So, I splurged. My partner got new tires for the truck and I got a Dyson.
I have been vacuuming all morning. Like one of the other posters .... I can't believe all the stuff that Hoover left behind.
This is a great vacuum. And while I listed the accessories as a con ... that is ONLY because I have to store them somewhere other than on the vacuum ... because boy do they work! My sofa has never been so clean and the under the "low places" attachment well ... it got it all!
It moves easy and emptying the canister is great. Most canister vacuums are clumsy and you wind up dumping the dirt and dust back into your house. With this one, you hold it over a trash bag, push a button and the dirt falls from the bottom. NO dumping, shaking, banging or creating a dust storm.
And the last best thing about this vacuum, when you place it in the upright "standby" mode ... it sucks dust and particles out of the air!
OK ... so I like my new vacuum. NO ... I LOVE my new Dyson.
Buy her one for Christmas! Really.
It's worth the money and with a 5 year warranty it actually costs less than the once a year Hoover, the belts and the bags."
What's great about it: Great suction, gets carpet clean, leaves the air fresh What's not so great: Price
"The old Hoover was no longer sucking up dog hair from our Golden Retriever and dirt in general off of the carpets. We decided that our next vacuum needed to be geared toward a home with animals. I had heard about Dyson but figured it was beyond my budget. After comparing the vacuums at the local Best Buy and realizing how much I've spent on bags, belts, etc. for my old vacuum, my husband and I decided to buy the Dyson DC17 Animal. I am so happy with it! First time we used it we filled up 4 canisters. In the 5 days I've had my Dyson, I have vacuumed my house 2 more times and am still getting up dog hair and powdery grey stuff. Yuck! I can't believe we have been living with carpets that were so dirty. Each time I vacuum now the air is fresher afterwards. For someone with allergies, this is a major plus!"
"Believe what you hear about this machine - its fantastic. I have SEVEN dogs and live in a dry dusty climate (Arizona). If it can get my carpet clean it can help you. I kick myself for buying cheap throw away vacuums year after year. You really do get what you pay for. I justified the $549 price on the basis that I will no longer have to fight the cheap vacuum that gets clogged and just rolls over dog fur. This Dyson will save whats left of my sanity!"
What a GREAT vacuum10/20/2007
By Shiffypopfrom California
What's great about it: BEST vacuum I ever used What's not so great: Haven't found any
"This vacuum picks up so much and seems like you are barely vacuuming at all. In just a few minutes of cleaning , it picked up more than my other brand EVER did. Very smooth & easy to use. I recommend it to everyone."
