A Deal Now   05/01/2008
By Dutchmoney007 from Des Moines, IA

Pros: Cheap
Cons: not Blu Ray

"I purchased this less than 1 year ago. I'm very happy with it. The thing that sucks is that They are no longer making HD-DVDs or players, which is why the price is $150 lower than when I purchased it.
But here is the deal. Even if you aren't interested in the HD-DVD, it is still an upconverter of regular DVDs. So if you don't want to spend the money on Blu-Ray, this is a good way to make regular DVDs look better.
This will save you a lot of space and cords around your TV. It looks good and works great."

A steal for an HD-DVD drive   03/16/2008
By CodeZer0

Pros: Works on Windows and Mac, supports 1080p
Cons: Only that I cannot find an equivalent burner

"Yes, BluRay may have officially won, and yes, Toshiba may be discontinuing the HD-DVD format. But you know what? Who cares. If you're like me, all the movies you'd care about seeing in High Definition are still only on HD-DVD, or the better versions (like 300) are on HD-DVD and not BluRay.

If you've an Xbox 360, you're pretty much good to go. Plug it in, and it shows up right away. Pop in a movie, and you're watching high definition at a great price. At most, you may just need to go on XBL to download an update for the 360's player software.

Also, yes, this drive will be recognized in a Windows XP (at least that's what I've tested on) PC and a Mac; only issue is that there are no HD-DVD-aware software available on the Mac, but there's a good bit of player software on the Windows side (and no need for Vista 64 either!). The most I've had to do was search for an updated UDF driver in order to address full functionality of the drive. So it will come in handy later on when HD-DVD movies are no longer being produced or in stock, and thus should have no problem using this to then bring them to Blu.

And with HD-DVD movies now selling for ridiculously marked down prices, this drive is quite the enabler for allowing you to enjoy some great values in high definition movies. About the only thing I'm just mad about is that I don't have a burner to be able to make my own high definition content to enjoy on this brilliant little device."

You cant go wrong!   03/14/2008
By LasVegasHDjunkie from Las Vegas

Pros: 1080i/p,saves wear n tear of 360's optical drive/Great Picture and sound/quiet/remote/cheap price
Cons: none

"You really cant go wrong with purchasing one of these drives! So yeah in the near future there will only be Blu-ray, but right now there is blu-ray and HD DVD. They are both HD, they are both 1080i/p, and have true HD audio. At the very least, you can use this to save wear and tear of your xbox 360's optical drive, so you can use your 360 for only games..and it upconverts standard DVD's really good also. Why pay 30 dollars for a Blu-ray when you can pay 10 bucks for a HD DVD?? The clearances on HD DVD's are getting better and better, with Best Buy really leading the way with a huge selection of $9.99-10.49! So I can watch a movie in 1080p for 49 bucks instead of 300 dollars for a blu-ray player... YOU CANT GO WRONG!!!"

bub-bye HDDvD   03/09/2008
By HardcoreGamer999

Pros: everyday upscaling dvd player/easy to set up
Cons: umm.. eh BluRay won

"Hey Everyone,
I picked this up when the price was 119.00 and the next week later Toshiba stated they were done with HD so the price dropped down to 50 bucks.. I went back to Best Buy and was reimbursed.. I was thinking maybe i should return it.. but i didn't cause its such a great upscaling dvd player! It's quiet and it's got a nice picture to boot. Also, it has another connection in the back if you want the camera option (worthless) and it runs cool if its not blocked by carpet or dust. I'd say its worth it.. I use it to watch Supernatural and my South Park seasons. I love it"

AWESOME PRODUCT!   02/25/2008
By hotrodjim

Pros: Great picture and easy setup DUH!
Cons: None!!!!

"Even though HD-DVD is going the way of Beta, still a great player and the discs are still a plenty and available. If and when Microsoft has the Blue ray add on,I'm there.
It's going to be great to have both side by side because HD or Blue ray are both awesome so having the best of both worlds is ok with me!"

Good HD-DVD Player   02/25/2008
By NotYourRealName from Hampton Roads

Pros: Great at upscaling regular DVDs, plays HD-DVDs great
Cons: Need the Xbox 360 to work (360 can be loud)

"This is a cheap alternative to an upscaling DVD player if you already own an XBOX 360. If not, you can still attach it to a PC with Vista and use it's HD-DVD capabilities there. Since it is inexpensive (February 2008), I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to wear out their XBOX 360 laser on watching movies...."

Great Addition   02/23/2008
By tonym89

Pros: 1080P over HDMI / SD Upconvert / Compact Design / Cheap HD-DVD Titles / Continue to play HD-DVD content titles you own /
Cons: HD-DVD releases will dwindle in the next few months

"Purchased this in light of knowing that HD-DVD was going to lose out, but hey... Blu-Ray - HD-DVD...doesnt matter, neither one looks better than the other..it was all about capacity and open source.
Drive works flawlessly, produces a beautiful picture at 1080P. Designed to allow Microsoft WiFi adapter to plug into it, and gives an additional USB port to use.
Picked it up to take advantage of $9 to $12 HD-DVD's to start my HD collection, and due to the fact that its an external drive, if an when Microsoft releases a Blu-Ray addon, it will sit nicely next to this one and I can continue my HD collection with Blu-Ray discs... its a win win situation.
Consider the cost of $120 an now possibly $50!!...of which I will buy another just to have as a spare for future proofing that my HD Discs will have hardware to play on in the future."

Good Purchase   02/21/2008
By Racerchik from Belle Chasse, LA

Pros: good picture and sound quality
Cons: Blu-ray won the war

"I bought this for my husband for Christmas since he already had an XBox. It has great picture and sound quality. Unfortunately, since Toshiba decided not to proceed with their HD DVD's, it's obsolete already. But, we can still watch the movies we already have."

Great product   02/15/2008
By Innkeeper from Katy Texas

Pros: Cheapest HD DVD player
Cons: Blue way format is winning the battle

"Well now, I did my research read the reviews and after I upgraded my tv to a HD 32" and the nest projected step was the upgrade the DVD player. I did like the idea that it plays through the xbox 360 elite. does not useup a HDMI outlet. It plays great, great picture and my only problem is that block buster, netflex and alot of the rest have gone with the blue ray format. But it works great, it's a xbox add on and the rest will have to be seen later."

3 stars only because HD DVD's are on life support   02/15/2008
By Craigers from Dallas, TX

Pros: Great, solidly built add-on to play GREAT looking/sounding movies in HD.
Cons: Color (White) does not match my black Xbox 360; it's HD format is on it's last legs

"This is a great add-on for your Xbox 360; plays HD DVDs and SD dvds perfectly and is great for that purpose. Unfortunate for this product that everyone seems to be jumping the HD DVD ship. =(

Great product, wished it came in black to match my Xbox 360 --- maybe they'll get the color right on the upcoming (I hope) blu-ray add-on.

Got a great deal on the product and lots of extras (various hd dvd added to sweeten the deal), so I'll be enjoying my 25+ HD DVD's (and 350+ sd dvds) for a long time."

Think Twice   02/13/2008
By roevey

Pros: cost, quality
Cons: blu-ray is winning out

"I'm a big fan of this player. It's easy to use and everything looks and sounds great. The problem, however, is that most places have switched exclusively to carrying blu-ray. Also, a majority of the studios have switched over to blu-ray as well. Kind of a bummer."

Way too loud   02/13/2008
By Jefedelospollos2 from MA

Pros: Great picture, easy setup.
Cons: Fan noise/vibration louder than my Xbox

"For being an inexpensive avenue into high def dvd, this is a pretty good buy. However, with the standards war going on I wasn't expecting HD DVD to win, and that's a foregone conclusion now. Also, the fan in this little unit is at least as loud as the one in my 360, and it also emits a hum when the disc is spinning at speed, which makes watching movies at anything less than high volume nearly impossible."

Great purchase   02/12/2008
By RESheehy18 from Southern, NH

Pros: Low Cost, great quality HD picture
Cons: has to be used with the XBOX 360, if you have one already definitely worth the purchase.

"So much cheaper the Blu-Ray or buying a PS3 AND the picture is amazing. Looks great on my 42" Hitachi Plasma TV, love watching movies on it, plus it will still play my old DVD's as well which is nice until I expand my HD Collection."

Good Value   02/12/2008
By Mark462 from Spokane, WA

Pros: Can't beat the price. Great picture quality
Cons: No next gen audio codec output (Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby HD, DTS-HD). No deep color support. HD-DVD losing format war?

"Great picture & if you don't have a receiver that can input the new audio codecs that HD-DVD offers, then don't hesitate buying it. However, if you want to utilize these new codes, pony up another $120 and get a Toshiba HD-A35 player.
Good entry product into HD-DVD."

Good deal   02/11/2008
By Zodin from Sacramento, CA

Pros: price, quality
Cons: stand alone, requires xbox live for updates.

"Overall this HD player is great. I have had it for about a year and a half with absolutely no mechanical problems what so ever. For the price it is a great deal for HD. The quality of the movies is excellent. One downfall is that it is a completely separate piece of hardware so it's one more thing you have to make room for and keep cords untangled. It would have been nice if you could swap out the internal drive much like a PC. Also in order to always be able to play the latest HD content, you need to download updates through xbox live. This is only really a problem if you do not have access to a high speed internet connection since xbox live silver is free."

good for the money   02/11/2008
By dubz from ga

Pros: cheap, works well
Cons: can be a bit noisy, hdmi depends on your 360

"nice hd dvd player for the money. it does make some noise but if you have your speakers up you won't ever notice it. hdmi output relies on that of your 360, and unfortunately, mine doesn't have that option."

Awesome Purchase   02/10/2008
By SvuSuperman from Salt Lake City, UT

Pros: Inexpensive for the Great Quality you pay for elsewhere!
Cons: "Nothing comes to mind at the Moment"

"Honestly, where can you find the HD-DVD / (Blu-ray) quality for a lower price?... NOWHERE! Yeah so you have to own a 360 to use it, just an even better excuse to tell the significant other why you need a 360! Anyway Picture quality is great; sound is great, just make sure you 360 is switched to the HDTV setting on the AV output cable in the back, that'll cause a "de de de" moment! Great Job Microsoft!"
