SynopsisA billion dollar aerospace compound is overrun by a paramilitary force that takes the people inside hostage. The faction issues no demands, and its motives are a mystery. The government calls in a highly-skilled special ops team to end the standoff, but the mission ends in the violent deaths of the operatives. Live footage of the massacre is cut short by an unexpected wave of destruction that leaves military leaders in shock. There is only one option left — you. Tread into terror, and use your elite training to put a decisive end to the violent siege. You are not merely a soldier — you are a living weapon. In F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault Recon), you are trained to handle the impossible and are armed with experimental, high-tech weaponry that turns you into the ultimate killing force. The Commander-in-Chief grants you full executive authority to resolve this situation by any means necessary. Prepare to show your enemies the true meaning of F.E.A.R. as you lay down the law in multiplayer skirmishes on Xbox Live.

What's great about it: Arcade like FPS, much violence and gore, Suspense a thrilling touch.
What's not so great: Weird graphics, and insanely long and difficult for casual gamers.
Fun enough to buy for only $30, but if you aren't a hardcore gamer then don't get too wrapped up in dying every 5 seconds by the hand of the psychotronic supersoldiers you encounter. Just sit back, relax, and have fun with it.
Multiplayer is also intense.

What's great about it: Amazing fun. Slow-mo is SICK in this game. Guns are sweet. Superb.
What's not so great: None that I can think of.
The first time I played this game was on the PC. It was the multi-player Demo. Since the first match I played, I was amazed. I was instantly hooked. The game holds you like no other. The single player can be VERY spooky and WILL strike some sort of fear in you, especially if you play it with the lights off and with some nice headphones. It is one he-ll of an experience. In my top 3 FPS favorites.

If you like to save your money for only the best games that are out there for the 360, this one definitely deserves your consideration! I only buy games that I really think I will enjoy playing over and over again, and this is definitely of my best purchases for the Xbox 360.
I've played through this game and it really is a thrilling experience. The surprises this game throws at you remind of Doom 3 for the original Xbox.
The graphics in this game are amazing, even for being played on a Standard Definition TV. The firefights are intense, fast-paced, impressive and definitely get your heart racing at times. A nice variety of weapons makes going through the game interesting, but the explosions are where it's at in this game. Exploding barrels, fire extinguishers, and having proximity mines, grenades, and C-4 at your disposal guarantee fiery destruction in every level.
The game definitely does earn it's M rating with language used by the enemy during firefights and the almost ridiculous amount of gore from explosions and shotguns. Gore can be turned down or off in the setting menu, but the gore is one of the great parts about the game (if you don't mind it).
A truly impressive storyline involves the player in adding pieces to the plot by finding information about what is going on behind the mysterious characters in the game. The use of voicemails and laptops left in the deserted office buildings and laboratories make you feel like you really have been dropped into this game and left to discover, explore, and survive.
Unfortunately many of the achievements available for this game involve online multiplayer in which I do not have access to participate. Many involve killing people so many times with a certain weapon, but thankfully there are also a nice amount of gamerpoints to be earned by finishing the campaign on different difficulties or by tracking down every piece of something in a single run-through.
An additional mode called "Instant-Action" puts your survival skills to the test to see how well you fare when given limited ammunition and supplies and forced to take out every opponent you face. You fight against computer-controlled opponents just like in the campaign and are graded on how well you do on a map if you complete it. You are given a summary of how well you completed the mission and can compare it to your friends success over Xbox Live. This mode gives a single-player more to do with the game than play through the campaign.
Even without the multiplayer, F.E.A.R. is an amazing-looking game that gave me plenty of surprises and intense moments. If you are interested in getting all of the gamerpoints available for the campaign, the game definitely has great replay value. And with the additional "Instant-action" mode, this game will give you plenty to do before you think of taking it out of your 360.

I am not a huge first-person shooter fan because the gameplay is not as sophisticated as third-person action games, but F.E.A.R. won me over for two reasons: a creepy storyline and the chaos of a gun battle.
Without rehashing the story, the atmospherics of F.E.A.R. approach the classic survival-horror genre made famous by the Resident Evil series. The designers did a superb job with the lighting, ambient sounds and just the right amount of "gotcha" moments. There are some spooky moments where you are walking around in a half-lit warehouse or office complex, wondering who or what is going to jump out at you, which heightens the tension. Shadows are well done and light fixtures swing ominously. While the survival-horror aspects do fade away as you get further into the game, giving way to pure action, there is enough to give it a unique feel, so much so that F.E.A.R. might eventually open up a whole new sub-genre of FPS games, which is not a bad thing.
But it is the terrifying chaos and realism of the gun battles where F.E.A.R. really shines. In the same way that "Saving Private Ryan" put the audience on the beaches of Normandy like no film before, no FPS I've played captures the sights and sounds of a firefight quite like this one. The guns are loud and you can hear the brass casings flying everywhere as you chew through clip after clip. (It is also terrifying to hear an enemy grenade bounce off the walls and floors as it flies towards you.) Smoke will fill the air as cement from the walls is chipped off and turned to dust, or a grenade is lobbed into the fray, or even from the muzzle of your automatic weapon, and it absolutely will obscure your view of the battle and your enemies, so be careful. Even your hearing is affected in the wake of a too-close grenade concussion, muffled for a moment as you shake out the cobwebs.
Your environment interacts with the firefights to a satisfying degree, with barrels, fire extinguishers and power panels exploding when hit. (Tip: If you can't hit an enemy directly, look for a fire extinguisher next to him and shoot it out--it's just as effective.) Where this is most evident is in the industrial, laboratory and office areas. The most terrifying firefights are in the labs and offices because you are in close quarters with enemies and *everything* will fly around when hit--stacks of paper, computer monitors, beakers, glass from windows, telephones, chairs, window blinds, bookcases, you name it. It is in these moments--when automatic rifle fire is in the air, glass is shattering, paper is shredding, grenades are exploding and cement is being chipped off the walls--that F.E.A.R. establishes itself as one of the true pulse-pounding FPS games on the market. Unfortunately, huge chunks of masonry are not permanently blown apart, nor walls flattened, nor desks destroyed, when you throw a grenade, but look around after a vicious battle and you will see pockmarks on the walls as a reminder of what you just survived.
F.E.A.R. does earn its "M" rating in spades, even beyond the obvious carnage of downing scores of enemies. The aftermath of a close-range shotgun battle or a grenade in the corner is not for the faint of heart. Bad guys realistically pinwheel around when being hit with bullets and cry out in pain when dying. The cries are realistic, the language is salty (You'll think you're watching "Die Hard" with all the f-bombs flying around) and the game sugarcoats nothing, even the grimness of death. To the designers' credit, the game cleans up the blood after firefights, so if you revisit an area, all you will see is the fallen bodies.
Bottom line:
I wanted to give the game a 5-star rating, except that a few elements make the game almost too easy. One is that, while the gun battles are intense, you usually know when they are going to happen because the enemies talk with each other. For some strange reason, even after halfway through the game, the bad guys do not figure out how to maintain radio silence. The benefit of this failed AI strategy is it gives you the drop on them and you can usually pick off at least one bad guy per gun battle before things go crazy. Squads also operate independent of each other, so even after you wipe out one squad, all other squads on the level are oblivious to your presence, except for the rare occasions when two squads are patrolling adjacent areas. And the second, huge, advantage is the Slo-Mo feature, which allows you to move faster than your enemy. Once you devise a strategy of when to use Slo-Mo, you have more than enough (it drains while in use) to pick off enemies with relative ease, especially the ones hiding behind obstacles, and are immune to their scrambling tactics. While some of the more intense firefights require Slo-Mo to survive, most of the time it is a cheap way to conserve ammo and health, and makes the battles anti-climactic. In order to get the full experience of playing F.E.A.R., use Slo-Mo sparingly.
While F.E.A.R. is not the absolute best FPS on the market, it is close and has distinctive features that separates it from the crowded field of average games and, thus, rightfully deserves a place in your game library.
