I waited a few months after purchasing this camera before writing a review. I know a lot of people get on here and are totally happy, just to turn around and find those defects.
With this camera, there really are none. It is light weight, afordable, and takes the most beautiful pictures, in manual mode or in automatic. You get the best of both worlds with this one. You can go manual and take care of the settings yourself for that customized look or for the quick shot and novice, automatic is wonderful. There are three focal points, not just one, so the camera is sure to find something to focus on for a beautiful picture.
There are many different settings, from portrait to sport shot, so the camera will work with whatever you are trying to take a picture of. The lens it comes with is by far the best I have seen. Usually I am wanting to buy a better lens as soon as I start using an slr camera...not with this one. You can chose the ISO settings, if you are more confident in your abilities, or let the camera automatically chose the settings for you.
The pictures are beautiful. Rich and vibrant. On the highest setting, you can easily get a poster size print and not lose any of the picture to graininess or blur. The spead (2.5 pic/sec) is wonderful for those action shots of kids or pets too. You can effectively make a still movie with this feature and capture every angle of your subject. This is great for active little ones, so you can be sure to get that perfect shot without posing.
Great high quality camera! I can't wait to get the telephoto lens to see what else this baby can do!

For photographers who enjoy SLR photography and want to move into the digital realm, this is an incredible camera. It is reasonably priced with professional features, is very easy to use and takes fabulous pictures. Like any good SLR you will enjoy this camera for a lifetime. You can purchase telephoto lenses and other peripherals to tailor the camera to your needs. When I am shooting at special events, I always feel that I have the best camera because it is a Nikon...

I've had the Nikon D40 for almost a year now and it's the best DSLR ever. Others have already commented the great features so I'll just add that if you can get your hands on one, please do so and you will not regret it at all. Happy shooting with this camera.

Overall, its really easy to use. All the instructions is understandable and I have no problem to understand all of it. Only the problem is that(I think this is for me), to learn and blend the features in taking a great picture, that's bothers me. Maybe I'm not a fast learner, but I will learn to use it soon.

This camera has alot of extra's, you can flip it on auto and take beautiful pictures or use the manual settings to get your creative juices flowing. I am glad I waited to buy my first DSLR, It is fabulous to take as many pictures as you want and then just delete the ones not wanted. I am partial to Nikon, and this camera does not dissapoint. You do not have to buy a thousand or more dollar camera to get excellent results. Best Buy is also a company that you can trust to deliver the goods.
What's great about it: Excellent picture quality, and light weight, light on the wallet too.
What's not so great: I really do not have any issues with the camera yet.
I would recommend this to a friend!

The camera is so light and the battery holds for hours. This camera is better than the D90 and D70. It takes the best close up pictures. It takes better close up pictures than the D700. I like this camera the best and for the price it is perfect.
What's great about it: The pictures of a small insect come out so precise. My daughter also looks perfect!
What's not so great: Nothing to complain about!

I love this camera. I am a novice this camera is so easy to use and takes AMAZING pictures. I can now take my own family portraits instead of going to a studio and spending a couple hundred on photos. It has already paid for itself. The clarity and detail is more than I expected!

Some professional insiders claim that the D40 is an all around better camera than the D3000. The D40 is now out of production so investment in this camera is a smart move as prices could climb as this camera becomes harder to find. The camera that replaced this model is the D3000. If you can afford it, the Nikon that surpasses both of these is the D5000 but for entry level photographers such as myself, the D40 has everything I need! Dont be afraid to purchase refurbished Nikons, Nikon does an excelent job of fixing them up!
What's great about it: This camera is a steal compared to the low price and amazing picture quality!
What's not so great: Might not have all the bells and whistles of its replacement, the D3000.
I would recommend this to a friend!

It's a great camera for the price! Lightweight, easy and fast control, great picture quality - what else do you need? If you are a beginner in the DSLR's world this camera is one of the best choices. With some experience you will be able to take great pictures in any conditions. The cons is that it offers a mediocre performance in low-light conditions, and usually to get best results you'll have to switch to manual mode (especially when not using flash). Camera requires lenses with built in auto-focus motor - otherwise use manual focus.
What's great about it: Lightweight, fast control, great quality
What's not so great: Not so great in low-light conditions, no in camera autofocus motor

Been through my share of cameras - mostly canon powerpoints. My sister has had this camera for 3 years and the quality of the shots are superb- however, the price was too high. When I found this here for $400 - bargain - same price as my other camera that can not compare - I grabbed one as did 2 of my siblings!
It's a great camera for someone who wants to enter into the SLR camera - did not have to check with manual before using - although I should eventually learn some new tricks. I did have trouble setting up originally - but my more tech savvy husband took care of that.
The quality is unbelievable - can not compare to any previous camera - II'm loving my new toy!
I now have my eyes on the nikon d90 - but we'll have to wait for the price to drop.....

I'm the owner of canon 40d. and wanted a small dlsr for secondary. I found this camera with kit lens has a better outdoor performance than my canon 40d. this is really a big surprise. I'm using more nikon d40 than my canon 40d.
Besides the kit lens, all nikon d40 owners may consider nikon 35mm af-s f1.8g for indoor low light shooting, and 55-200mm vr for telephoto shooting.
What's great about it: light weight, image quality, easy to use
What's not so great: less mp

This camera is the best camera I have ever owned. My skills are limited and I can take great pictures with it just fine. I have only had it for a few weeks and I take it out at least once a day. It is easy to use and takes the best pictures ever!

I am an amateur interested in getting into photography. I bought this camera as the price ($399 before a BING cash-back discount) was affordable and I won't feel the pinch if the photography itch goes away. So far, I have used my infant as a subject and had great results. Even using just the Auto feature gets you pictures that are SO MUCH BETTER than anything a point-and-shoot camera can take.
What's great about it: Easy to shoot pics, great quality pics, rechargeable battery
What's not so great: Not ideal to use as a camcorder

I purchased the D40 as an inexpensive way to see if I'd like DSLR photography before buying more expensive equipement. It was a very good decision.
At first I was somewhat frustrated trying to learn to use this camera in the manual and semi-automatic modes. I was worried that it would end up being a very expensive point and shoot camera. Then, slowly and with doing some research, I began to learn. I am glad that I bought this entry level camera as a more advanced model may have overwhelmed me, frustrated me and made me give up on photography. Instead it allowed me to take great pictures while learning.
I've recently moved up to a more expensive camera body and will now begin to teach my wife using the D40. After that it will become the camera body with a couple of inexpensive lenses that goes everywhere with me. when I'm not taking the new camera body out. It's really a great little camera.
What's great about it: This is a great inexpensive first DSLR camera to own
What's not so great: After a couple of years you'll want more options

I've had a few cheap digital cameras and decided it was time to make a big purchase on a great camera, so I wouldn't have to buy another one later. This camera is amazing and takes awesome pictures! This is a great SLR camera! If your a pro or just a beginner this Nikon will take you where you need to go. The features on the D40 are endless. You can really get in there and adjust the settings to any condition. This is truly an awesome digital camera at an amazing price! $399. You can't beat that anywhere.

I bought this camera as a gift to my mom. The nikon website www.nikondigitutor.com helped me familiarize its features and I love it! I'm sure my mom will love it too. I wish I bought this item before I went to Italy.
