"I waited a few months after purchasing this camera before writing a review. I know a lot of people get on here and are totally happy, just to turn around and find those defects.

With this camera, there really are none. It is light weight, afordable, and takes the most beautiful pictures, in manual mode or in automatic. You get the best of both worlds with this one. You can go manual and take care of the settings yourself for that customized look or for the quick shot and novice, automatic is wonderful. There are three focal points, not just one, so the camera is sure to find something to focus on for a beautiful picture.

There are many different settings, from portrait to sport shot, so the camera will work with whatever you are trying to take a picture of. The lens it comes with is by far the best I have seen. Usually I am wanting to buy a better lens as soon as I start using an slr camera...not with this one. You can chose the ISO settings, if you are more confident in your abilities, or let the camera automatically chose the settings for you.

The pictures are beautiful. Rich and vibrant. On the highest setting, you can easily get a poster size print and not lose any of the picture to graininess or blur. The spead (2.5 pic/sec) is wonderful for those action shots of kids or pets too. You can effectively make a still movie with this feature and capture every angle of your subject. This is great for active little ones, so you can be sure to get that perfect shot without posing.

Great high quality camera! I can't wait to get the telephoto lens to see what else this baby can do!"

"This camera is great for the person who wants to get a better camera for sports, nature, or whatever instead of getting a simple point and shoot camera. With the point and shoot cameras you are limited by the lens, they are more convenient but you sacrifice quality.
Where this camera shines for me is with sports photography. By adjusting some settings, i was shooting pictures 10x better than before. They were sharp, clear, and had great lighting.
The con is only there because I couldn't think of anything really for this camera.
You will enjoy this camera thoroughly."

"I got Nikon D40 4 days back from BB. It was amazing buy, BB reps were great. This is my first DSLR.
Camera itself is amazing and there are no surprises that it is one of the highest rated DSLR. Its very compact for a DSLR and the kit lens is of decent quality. One of the best feature is inbuilt help. Camera tells you about what to do when you are doing something wrong (very ingenius feature). Also Nikon did an excellent job not to go after this insane mega pixel race. Keeping the same sensor size and packing insane amount of pixels has big detrimental effect on image noise level.
This camera is great because they have a DX sized sensor and 6.1 mpixels of high quality which comes out to be around 1.4 mpixels/cm2 (one of the highest).
Overall i'm a very satisfied Nikon owner."

"This is the BEST camera I have ever owned! I am not a professional photographer (obviously or I would own a much more expensive camera) but nobody would ever know because I can now take professional quality photos with ease. Was very easy to setup and begin taking photos right out of the box. I will never own another brand of camera beside Nikon now. They got it right on in the D40! The only thing I would like to have added is a kit Vibration Reduction (VR) lens. I did buy the VR 55-200 Nikkor and only use it as it does everything I need. I would 100% recommend this camera to anyone interested in taking great photos and not wanting to spend thousands of dollars. Great product!!!!!"

"I am a photojournalist for a local paper and this is my "working" camera as well as the one I use for pleasure and enjoyment. I have used this camera for almost a year and cannot find anything to complain about. I use the 55-200 mm lens, the 50 mm AF lens in manual mode and the 18-55 mm lens. For walk around, every day work use I most often rely on the 18-55 mm lens.
My photos are crisp, sharp and dependable, something I need to be able to count on for work."

"Our family just bought this camera 2 weeks ago. Our son plays football and I needed an upgrade. This camera takes great pics. I have been going through the manual to figure out how to do everything, but the auto always takes great pics. That's all I am doing know is taking pictures of everything. Highly recommend it!!!"

"This camera was my first SLR camera and it's still my camera of choice. The colors for the photos are wonderful, which means that I don't need to do much photoediting to adjust colors. The autofocus will work for almost all of the photos you need to take."

"I've used a 7.2 megapixel digital point & shoot for the past 4 years & loved it. I wanted to expand my photography knowledge & upgrade to a camera that could capture detailed portraits, fast action and nature. I read many reviews on DSL's, including ConsumerReports' and the Nikon D40 was consistently at the top of the list. I took the time to read every review on this site and was convinced that the D40 was the right camera for me. I also researched megapixels. What I had often heard was confirmed, you really only need a 6 megapixel camera for brilliant photos up to 8x10 to 11x14. Anything above 6 is a waste of money. That combined with suggestions written here to purchase the 55-200 Telephoto VR lens had me up and shootiing brilliant photos day one. See my photos attached. I also comparison shopped prices and got the camera and add'tl lens, leaving enough funds for me to purchase a Nikon bag which included a "How To Video." I would highly recommend this camera for the novice to the pro."

"This is my very first DLSR camera and I am so impressed. Because of that, my review may be considered biased since I really can't compare it much to other DSLR's. However, when you see a good picture, you know. I am a makeup artist so rather than spending $350+ per shoot to add to my portfolio, I decided to purchase an SLR camera and do my own. So far, I am dang proud of myself. I save money and have great portfolio photos."
