Best so far...

"I waited a few months after purchasing this camera before writing a review. I know a lot of people get on here and are totally happy, just to turn around and find those defects.
With this camera, there really are none. It is light weight, afordable, and takes the most beautiful pictures, in manual mode or in automatic. You get the best of both worlds with this one. You can go manual and take care of the settings yourself for that customized look or for the quick shot and novice, automatic is wonderful. There are three focal points, not just one, so the camera is sure to find something to focus on for a beautiful picture.
There are many different settings, from portrait to sport shot, so the camera will work with whatever you are trying to take a picture of. The lens it comes with is by far the best I have seen. Usually I am wanting to buy a better lens as soon as I start using an slr camera...not with this one. You can chose the ISO settings, if you are more confident in your abilities, or let the camera automatically chose the settings for you.
The pictures are beautiful. Rich and vibrant. On the highest setting, you can easily get a poster size print and not lose any of the picture to graininess or blur. The spead (2.5 pic/sec) is wonderful for those action shots of kids or pets too. You can effectively make a still movie with this feature and capture every angle of your subject. This is great for active little ones, so you can be sure to get that perfect shot without posing.
Great high quality camera! I can't wait to get the telephoto lens to see what else this baby can do!"

What's great about it: Lightweight, good price
What's not so great: None so far
"I bought this camera as a gift to my mom. The nikon website www.nikondigitutor.com helped me familiarize its features and I love it! I'm sure my mom will love it too. I wish I bought this item before I went to Italy. Bestbuy has a great financing offer of 18 months interest free when you use your bestbuy credit card. I felt like a pro whilst taking pictures!"

Best Camera at this Price Range

What's great about it: Very easy to use. Great price for the outstanding quality this camera offers.
What's not so great: No auto foucus mechanism on the camera, the lens must be auto focus.
"This is the best camera for anyone looking to get started in photography. It is really easy to use. You don't really need to know a whole lot about the settings when you start off and you will still be able to take really good pictures. I have recommended this camera to a few friends and they absolutely feel in love with it. A definite must have camera!!! 100% better than any point and shoot camera you can buy in this price range. I have had this camera for over a year and people always ask me if I take professional pictures because they just come out that good!"

What's great about it: easy to use, good price
"I got the D40 in March, and I absolutely LOVE it. It takes the most amazing pictures. I'm not into professional photography, I just bought it to take pictures of my boys, but it is everything I hoped for. It is so easy for me to use. I keep it on automatic focus, so I just point and shoot. I bought the extra zoom lens for it and the pictures really are unbelievable. I love that I can zoom in further on the camera itself and save it without losing the picture quality."

What's great about it: PICTURES, battery, ease of use, price, lens, size, features...EVERYTHING
What's not so great: the only thing I wish it came with a memory card... camera is perfect
"I debated for a while between getting a SLR and a regular point and shoot camera for a while. But, I am so happy I decided on the D40. The camera is awesome! Small and lightweight, but takes some of the most amazing pictures I have ever seen. DONT LET THE 6.1 MEGAPIXELS FOOL YOU! The only reason you need a camera with higher megapixels is if you plan on printing really, really big photos.
I need a camera to bring with me when I go abroad to Australia, and I decided on a SLR because I wanted to take more spectacular pictures while on my trip than a regular point and shoot. The point and shoot I was looking at, its best pictures were still worse than any picture with the D40.
This is my first SLR camera and it was so easy to learn how to use. Take 20 minutes to read the manual and you will know it all. This camera is very user friendly and easy to learn, even if you are new at the SLR game.
It feels good in the hand, very comfortable. The automatic mode takes great pictures no matter the scenery. It comes with a neck strap which is great, and necessary. My 2gig card will still hold about 250 pictures at the best quality.
My father just bought the D60, which compared to the D40 is just a slightly bigger body, 3 more focal points and 10.2 megapixels, which again isnt really necessary.
Overall this camera is 112% worth every penny. Look online for coupons like I did, I only paid $380 for the camera at Best Buy. If you are debating between this camera and something else like I was, GET THE D40, I cant stress it enough. I am completely satisfied with my purchase."

What's great about it: Continuous shooting mode will be great for my classroom.
What's not so great: MIght have to save a little longer since I'm on a teacher's salary!
"After seeing this camera, I must have it for my classroom! It will be great to use with my children as I plan lesson plans for my profound mentally handicapped children and regular education children. I can use this to make creative lesson plans on an interactive board. The fact that this camera has a continuous shooting mode will be very useful when I facilitate a career fair for my 4th - 5th graders."

What's great about it: Price, quality, easy to use, great for beginners, Battery life
What's not so great: nothing really, maybe megapixels but not really
"This is a great camera, especially as little as it costs. When I first bought a d40 it cost near 600 dollars, and it was still well worth that then. Some might find the 6.1 megapixels as too little, but really unless you are wanting to print out some massive pictures then 6 will cover all your needs. I am a recently graduated graphic design student and it has served me well in all my endeavors with it.
While I feel if you really want to learn SLR photography, film is the place to really learn, a d40 does great at providing all the options you need to really start exploring the creative possibilities of photography. And it also still works great as just a point and shoot on auto, only with my better quality and response time than a regular point and shoot.
In general if you want a digital SLR without spending a ton then go buy this camera."

What's great about it: Easy to opperate, great quality pictures, perfect for beginner photographers.
What's not so great: A little heavy for its size but nothing serious.
"I got the Nikon D40 as a starting photography camera for myself and found it to be very easy to use. The lens was easy to attach and scrolling through the different settings and features were easy as well. I would definitely recommend this camera to any beginning photographers or anyone interested in photography."

What's great about it: Picture quality
What's not so great: Nothing yet!
"I purchase this camera only two days ago and I'm already hooked! The picture quality is amazing! I don't have any previous experience with SLR cameras so I'm still studying up. The best part is that in the meantime the Auto feature works so well that I'm still getting amazing results!
No complaints so far!"

What's great about it: its cheap, but does a great job. but is definatly for new dslr users. Not for people trying to go pro.
What's not so great: no battery moter in the camera. Cant use lighting systems.
"has beautiful colors, its easy to use, small, light, and good price. really good for begineers. But if you trying to go pro not for you. you cant use the slave flashes or any external lighting systems. Alot of lenses are manuel focus on this camera. Because that the focusing moter is not in the camera it is in the lenses that are made for the camera. So if you just looking to have fun taking pictures, your a begineer, and need something better than a point and shoot, and need something cheaper this is a great choice for you!"

What's great about it: Easy to use.
What's not so great: Big for travel.
"I had a small go anywhere digital camera but got fed up with the digital zoom. I couldn't zoom in on anything with out it being pixelized. I also I hated using AA batteries because they don't last long. I had to get a camera w/ optical zoom and a lithium battery. This camera is a bit big for travel but the image quality is well worth the size of the camera. I love being able to zoom in on faces and see the sharpness in the image. I would definitely recommend this camera if the ability to zoom in and take close up pictures as well as image quality are important factors for you."

What's great about it: Ease of use clarity of photos not heavy
What's not so great: haven't had any complaints yet
"First digital camera. My pictures have NEVER come out so true to life and beautiful. I bought this camera as a gift to myself. I use to buy cheap cameras and the majority of the pictures came out terrible. I started reviewing digital cameras and decided to give this one a try. The colors are vivid. I took about an hour to read the manual and then I gave it a try. I either leave the dial on Auto I'll adjust it to the settings for a child or for a landscape. It takes excellent pictures with low light. I took picture of my kids swimming and it captured every detailed of the water, the water droplets from splashing and all. 100% satisfied chica!"

What's great about it: Easy to use, great pictures, simple but versitile features
What's not so great: Short shoulder strap
"I love this camera. So easy to use -- takes minutes to learn all of the features. Ability to edit photos on the camera makes the camera convenient to use. You don't have to know a lot about photography to use it, It's pretty simple even on manual settings. But if you're a veteran of the SLR, you'll appreciate this camera as much as the novice. A really good buy for the price."

Great transition Camara: Just as advertised

What's great about it: Functionality, Comfortable, Ease to Use
What's not so great: 6.1 Megapixels
"I debated a while before settling with the D40. The reason I did was because this was my first foray into the DSLR tier and wanted to make the safest investment. Boy, am I satisfied. The ability to have control over the different settings of a shot makes taking better pictures gratifying. All the features associated with the D40 are user friendly and nice. There is no built in image stabilization, but have noted any real issues. I was able to get the 55-200mm lens and a tutorial DVD in a price comp. So I am definitely excited about this new camera. If you want more megapixels, go with the D40x or D60.
Don't give up...practice makes perfect. I am hoping to be to move up to better cameras in the future just as soon as I can get the down pat."

What's great about it: Easy to understand, priced right
What's not so great: not a 10 megapixel for same price
"This is my first DSLR camera . I bought it 3 months ago as the package with the 2 lens, 18-55 and 55-200mm. Both the 18-55 and the 55-200 are not the VR (Vibration Reduction) lens at $590.54 out the door. No Bag. I bought the bag separate 2 weeks ago for $60. The Nikon bag specifically for the D40/D40x/D60. That bag included a book and a DVD. Very helpful. I was able to take great pictures straight out of the box. The firmware was already updated with the latest firmware. I recommend joining Nikonian.org for the beginners here. I have been able to learn allot through them. Recommendations of speed lights, lens, tripods and other accessories. Next Nikon will be a D90."
