Great Entry Level DSLR!

What's great about it: All around great Camera.
What's not so great: Flash is great but depending on use look into the Nikon SB-400
"This camera is great. I love that it helps you learn how to use a DSLR. Especially because this is my first one. It will actually tell you what you need to do on the screen. I have been able to capture some really great shots of my daughter with the 2.5 per second rapid shot feature that i had not been able to capture with my point and shoot camera. I also like that you can shoot in Raw+Jpeg create one image into each file for different editing purposes. It works great with both my Macintosh computers and I edit my RAW shoots using Aperture. Now I'm looking at buying the Nikon SB-400 flash for some better lighting get companion with the Nikon D40."

This camera has all the features and is relatively easy to use. It takes excellent pictures and is especially great to take action pictures.

What's great about it: picture quality, Many settings
What's not so great: 6.1MP picture
"This camera is great for the person who wants to get a better camera for sports, nature, or whatever instead of getting a simple point and shoot camera. With the point and shoot cameras you are limited by the lens, they are more convenient but you sacrifice quality.
Where this camera shines for me is with sports photography. By adjusting some settings, i was shooting pictures 10x better than before. They were sharp, clear, and had great lighting.
The con is only there because I couldn't think of anything really for this camera.
You will enjoy this camera thoroughly."

What's great about it: Great amount of high quality pixels ! Compact Size !
What's not so great: No AF Motor in Body !
"I got Nikon D40 4 days back from BB. It was amazing buy, BB reps were great. This is my first DSLR.
Camera itself is amazing and there are no surprises that it is one of the highest rated DSLR. Its very compact for a DSLR and the kit lens is of decent quality. One of the best feature is inbuilt help. Camera tells you about what to do when you are doing something wrong (very ingenius feature). Also Nikon did an excellent job not to go after this insane mega pixel race. Keeping the same sensor size and packing insane amount of pixels has big detrimental effect on image noise level.
This camera is great because they have a DX sized sensor and 6.1 mpixels of high quality which comes out to be around 1.4 mpixels/cm2 (one of the highest).
Overall i'm a very satisfied Nikon owner."

What's great about it: Weight, Picture Quality, Features, Ease of Use
What's not so great: Kit lens is not VR
"This is the BEST camera I have ever owned! I am not a professional photographer (obviously or I would own a much more expensive camera) but nobody would ever know because I can now take professional quality photos with ease. Was very easy to setup and begin taking photos right out of the box. I will never own another brand of camera beside Nikon now. They got it right on in the D40! The only thing I would like to have added is a kit Vibration Reduction (VR) lens. I did buy the VR 55-200 Nikkor and only use it as it does everything I need. I would 100% recommend this camera to anyone interested in taking great photos and not wanting to spend thousands of dollars. Great product!!!!!"

What's great about it: Lightweight, Easy to use as Manual or Automatic Modes
What's not so great: Absolutely none
"I am a photojournalist for a local paper and this is my "working" camera as well as the one I use for pleasure and enjoyment. I have used this camera for almost a year and cannot find anything to complain about. I use the 55-200 mm lens, the 50 mm AF lens in manual mode and the 18-55 mm lens. For walk around, every day work use I most often rely on the 18-55 mm lens.
My photos are crisp, sharp and dependable, something I need to be able to count on for work."

"Our family just bought this camera 2 weeks ago. Our son plays football and I needed an upgrade. This camera takes great pics. I have been going through the manual to figure out how to do everything, but the auto always takes great pics. That's all I am doing know is taking pictures of everything. Highly recommend it!!!"

"This camera was my first SLR camera and it's still my camera of choice. The colors for the photos are wonderful, which means that I don't need to do much photoediting to adjust colors. The autofocus will work for almost all of the photos you need to take."

"I've used a 7.2 megapixel digital point & shoot for the past 4 years & loved it. I wanted to expand my photography knowledge & upgrade to a camera that could capture detailed portraits, fast action and nature. I read many reviews on DSL's, including ConsumerReports' and the Nikon D40 was consistently at the top of the list. I took the time to read every review on this site and was convinced that the D40 was the right camera for me. I also researched megapixels. What I had often heard was confirmed, you really only need a 6 megapixel camera for brilliant photos up to 8x10 to 11x14. Anything above 6 is a waste of money. That combined with suggestions written here to purchase the 55-200 Telephoto VR lens had me up and shootiing brilliant photos day one. See my photos attached. I also comparison shopped prices and got the camera and add'tl lens, leaving enough funds for me to purchase a Nikon bag which included a "How To Video." I would highly recommend this camera for the novice to the pro."

"This is my very first DLSR camera and I am so impressed. Because of that, my review may be considered biased since I really can't compare it much to other DSLR's. However, when you see a good picture, you know. I am a makeup artist so rather than spending $350+ per shoot to add to my portfolio, I decided to purchase an SLR camera and do my own. So far, I am dang proud of myself. I save money and have great portfolio photos."

"This is a solid choice for anyone just getting started with photography who wants the level of control and ability to use different lenses that isn't available with point-and-shoots. The camera takes great pictures and the options available from the easy-to-navigate menu system give the photographer lots of flexibility.
I bought mine mainly to use to photograph children's sporting events, most of which are indoors (volleyball and basketball). A fast lens is required for this (such as the 70-200mm f2.8) and so I've spent a lot more on the lens than on the camera. I've had pretty good success with this combination, although I throw away a lot of shots that are out of focus. The D40 has three focus points, which is two more than you need for landscapes and things that don't move, but it's somewhat of a hindrance, particularly for a newbie like me who is relying on the autofocus system to track fast-moving subjects. Nevertheless, I've gotten lots of great pictures."

"I bought the D40 about a month ago and absoutely love this camera. If you are just getting into shooting with a digital SLR then this would be a perfect fit. From all the research that I did when choosing which Nikon to buy the D40, D60, or the D80. A professional photographer said save you money for a quality lense and buy the D40. That is what he primarily shoots with. This is the only Nikon Digital SLR that has a flash speed of 1/500 sec, the others the D60, D80, D300 which my husband owns only shoots at 1/250. Who would have thought with such a little camera. Save you money and buy this camera and get a good lense with your D40 like the 18-200 3.5-5.6 with VR. Also if you looking for a good little flash get the SB400. My husband plans on taking mine when he goes to shoot.
I love my D40"
