What's great about it: Light as a feather, Tack sharp photographs, Easy and fun to use
What's not so great: Lens selection somewhat limited, no bracketing feature.
"This is the perfect camera for most people reading this review. It does almost everything it's bigger brothers (the D80, D60, D200, D300) do, with less weight. It is the perfect SLR camera for family events and photos. I am a semi-professional photographer and I LOVE my D40. It is THE camera I take with me for vacations and any other time I'm not doing "serious" shooting. Do not get me wrong, this camera can take just as wonderful a photo as my D300, just not as easily. There are drawbacks to the D40; the selection of lenses while plenty for amateur photographers is a bit limited and the auto white balance is not as good as the D200 or D300. It only takes 2.5 frames a second, so for 'serious' sports photographers would want to use a different camera, but for the little league or high school sports parent it will do just fine, (given the use of a fast lens). I love this camera. I have taken almost 7000 pictures with mine since October and it's still going strong. It's easy to use, light, takes fantastic pictures, the battery will last you all day long. I have never had to switch batteries 'in the field' with this camera. Paired with the SB-400 flash this camera will be all most people would ever need to take beautiful, professional looking photos. I very highly recommend it."

Great starter D-SLR

What's great about it: Easy to use, friendly menus, navigation, BATTERY LIFE!!!!
"This camera was my first entrance into the D-SLR world and I couldn't be happier or more staisfied with the purchase. As a very amatuer student in the field of photography - I knew I wanted to dabble in this SLR world but didn't want to spend a fortune in doing so. You cannot go wrong with this purchase...just be sure to buy the UV protection covers for your lenses as well!"

What's great about it: Easy to set up and Very easy to use.
What's not so great: None that I have found
"This is a wonderful camera, don’t let the fact that it is only a 6.1 mega pixel camera put you off. Unless you want to blow a picture to life size dimensions this camera will do everything you want to do. If you want the advice of a pro go to www.kenrockwell.com . Ken will also show you how to set up the camera to get the most out of it. I could go on and on about this camera but it has pretty much all been said in the other reviews.
When I was shopping for a DSLR another customer told me about the Nikon D-40 and about Ken Rockwell’s site, I would like to thank that guy this is the best buy I think I have ever made."

"I got this camera for Christmas this year from my fiance, and wow! I have wanted a D-SLR for a few years now, and now that I have one, I am sorta mad at myself for not getting one sooner. I have had several higher end point and shoot cameras in the past, but there is no comparison to D-SLR. The "wait time" is gone, I have taken so many great pictures in just the month that I have had it. I chose the D40 over the cannon for two reasons, for one, these reviews here on BestBuy.com, and two, I got the camera in a great bundle package. If there was not a bundle, I probably still would have chosen this over the Cannon, but it would have been a toss up. I am still learning a lot about how to use all the functions of the camera, but I would in no way, shape or form call any of the cameras functions difficult to use. I am already looking at upgrading to one of the heavier Nikon's as my hands do shake a little (thanks for that heredity Dad, I'm only 27 btw) so I think that a heavier camera could correct that somewhat. As you can see from my pictures, this is a very easy camera to use, right out of the box!"

What's great about it: Cost effective, Great Auto Focus, Lightweight
What's not so great: Only possible negative is it could have a better lense
"I love this camera. I had a chance to take it to the OSU/Penn State game in Happy Valley in Oct. 07'. I was sitting up near the top of the Stadium yet I was able to get great pictures of the field, stadium and the players. The only thing that I recommend is purchasing a better zoom lense. Beside that it's awesome"

What's great about it: Light, easy to use, uses SD cards and helpful menu system.
What's not so great: Missing some features like pictures stability and bracketing. Included software is weak.
"If a person is looking to upgrade from a paint and shoot to a DSLR this is a great camera for them. Nikon made a system that is easy to use for a person who just took snapshots before but with these options I am composing more.
It is very responsive and with the kit you are shooting very soon out of the box. The screen is big and bright for the menus."

"I just recently bought the Nikon D40 SLR Digital Camera and I absolutely love it !!! This is my first SLR (I always used digital & 35MM's before) and it took no time at all to use it! I took it right out of the box & starting shooting! I would recommend this camera to anyone! It is also a great camera and a good value! I can't wait to purchase additional lens for it."

Great All-Around Camera!

What's great about it: Good resolution, SLR, Good flash strength, no photo delay
What's not so great: Not a portable as compact models
"Just before our son was born, we began our research for a new camera. We owned a compact Canon A95 that took awesome outdoor photos, but terrible indoor photos. (The flash was too strong.) Besides, the 3 second photo delay meant that we would miss those brief baby moments. Our search led us to the Nikon D40. The resolution is supurb in 10 x 13 portraits. Both indoor and outdoor shots are excellent. We love the SLR features and are saving for a zoom lens (although the standard lens is perfect for normal shots). We have already taken several thousand photos in our son's seven months and have been very pleased with their quality. The standard battery lasts a long time (a month or more) before needing to be recharged. (We no longer have to keep up with our rechargable AA batteries that only lasted a day or two.) In all, we love our camera and would highly recommend it."

What's great about it: cost
What's not so great: only 6 megapixel
"Love this camera, easy to use and takes great pictures. I used this for sports pics and marching band pics. I have captured pictures that I will remember for years. Lessons at the best buy store that were offered have been invaluable. Great accessories. Bought the ext. warranty and it gives me a sense of calm just knowing my major purchase is covered."

Great Buy to begin with

What's great about it: Lightweight, Quick, Easy to use, No Delay on shutter like typical Digitals, Fun to learn with
What's not so great: Low on megapixels compared to other SLR's, Not water resistant like others, not as many frames per second as other SLR's
"This was my first SLR I've bought and it is a great buy for beginners. Buying a digital SLR was great because you can play with the aperature and length of exposure and all the things that make SLR's fun minus the whole spending money on developing them. The D40 is extremely easy to use and fairly cut and dry. The color of the photos are accurate and crisp. At 2.5 frames per second the speed is adequate for basic shooting and backyard sports. At 6 Megapixels the D40 is pretty much at the bottom of the line. Granted, unless you do major cropping you wont need any more than this. None the less I would still like to have more just in case. This is where I think the D40x would be a better choice if you needed more. The frames per second as I said before were good enough for backyard sports and other simple things but college football games and anything more is a bit disappointing to a degree. I was on the line between the Canon Rebel Xt and this, the Nikon D40. The things that swayed my opinion were: Every professional I talked to (Pro Wedding Photographer, Cord Camera Reps and Others) said that you're buying into a family and that Nikon is one of the best known for their optics and most people said that Nikon's was the best. I figured when buying 5, 6 hundred dollar lenses you want the best. Another reason was that the Canon IS 70-300mm (basic telephoto) was over $600 and the Nikkor VR 55-200mm you can get for $250 and if you need that extra 100mm a VR 70-300mm for $499. The bottom line is: The D40 is a great buy for under $600 and is extremly lightweight. It is a great starter camera and has outstanding performance, especially for the price. Anyone looking for experimentation with SLR's would find this to be a great camera due to the instant gratification of seeing how your photo turned out right after you take it. Great camera overall"

Purchasing different lenses may become expensive, but this camera is an investment for quality pictures."

What's great about it: Everything (almost)
What's not so great: Proprietary lenses, software for computer
"I got this camera after my point-and-shoot started going on the fritz, and I can say that it is probably the best choice that I could have made. This camera takes great pictures, even for only a 6MP camera! Unless you are going to be making large portrait prints (over 18" x 24"), this should be the only camera you ever need. It's fast, both in starting up and in how fast it can process the picture. Just make sure you have a high speed card. It's very lightweight, yet feels extremely sturdy compared to its competitors. The large LCD screen gives great details, and the onscreen menus are easy to navigate and understand. The help button is a great little feature that more manufacturers should look into. Dollar for dollar, this is the best digital SLR you can buy!"
