What's great about it: Looks sleek, price
What's not so great: Outputs, HDMI problems
"I bought this one because I though I would be getting the best quality possible for the price. While the picture is great (though still can't tell the difference between componant), I was very dissapointed with it. First of all, every time I play a movie I have to unplug the HDMI cable and plug it back in (though there is a small possibilty it may be the TV). My main issure is that it does not have an 'optical digital audio out'.Sure, I blame myself for not looking at the specs, but even cheap DVD players have this."

I should of stuck with Sony

What's great about it: Divx, plays all formats
What's not so great: Slow loading, not user friendly
"I bought this player after my ultra reliable Sony died after 4 years of constant use. It plays DVDs fine, including my less-than-pristine homemade DVDs. I have not tried out of unconverting features yet since I do not have a HDTV. However I find a few things very annoying with this player. First, the load this is very, very slow. You have to turn it on, wait 10 seconds, put in the disc, wait 10 seconds, then go thru the typical menu stuff. My old Sony could get the disc spinning to speed in 5 seconds flat, not 20. Also this player is not very "smart". On my old Sony (and a newer one I bought for the bedroom) I just had to hit Play and it would turn on and start playing. This Philips I have to turn on first (waiting 10 seconds, again ) and then hit play. Finally, the red power light is always on with the player is OFF! I cannot understand why they make electronics that notify you when they are off. I know it's off and I don't need a light telling me so!!!"

Good Dvd player

What's great about it: upconverts reg dvd's pretty well, usb port
What's not so great: none
"We got this dvd player to replace our old one. This thing far surpasses our last one. The upconvert gives it a pretty picture; not excellent but good.
I haven't messed with the divx yet because I can just save my movies to my memory stick and play off of there. The placing of the usb is great as well. Right in front!
So for the price we paid for this it really was a good buy. As other reviewers have stated the loading tray does feel a little cheap but we've had it a few months and there haven't been any problems yet."

What's not so great: its a cheap piece of metal

Not a Bad Up-conversion Player

What's great about it: Price-Picture Quality -Plays Many Types of Media
What's not so great: No Eject Button on Remote
"Not a bad Up-conversion player for the price. Got it on sale for under $60. I purchased this player because I've heard that Philips players will practically play almost ANY media that you throw into it.Have only tried -R & -RW media so far. Have not tried or used the USB port yet.
I was pleasantly surprised by the picture quality , I did notice a difference in picture quality between my older progressive scan player & this Philips. I had just purchased a 32" flat panel HDTV to hook up to this player. A word of advice....It will only up-convert to it's fullest potential via HDMI cable.
So far a good bang for your buck w/ this player. I would recommend it."

What's great about it: Price
What's not so great: Froze on 1st use, picture quality not great
"I bought this to go with my new HD tv. I am ordering HDMI cables, and I hope they will improve the picture quality because the cables provided give a lousy picture. My $30 DVD player works better. The first time I used this, the player froze. I couldn't open it to retrieve my DVD. It wouldn't turn off, so I had to pull the plug, reinsert it and turn the machine back on. I am very disappointed. This seems like a cheap unit, and the remote is lousy, as others have noted. I am debating about returning it."

What's great about it: DivX, upconvert, front USB
What's not so great: stutter playing mpeg2 recordings from usb, volume seems low
"Upconvert and DivX works great. Plugged a WD MyBook 500GB external drive into the USB port, and can play tons of DivX movies and other stuff, even view folders of pictures or play MP3's. Browsing the drive with the remote is easy, and playing DivX files works flawlessly. Full DVD quality mpeg2 recordings I have won't play without a stutter. I'm not sure if this is the USB port or the hard drive itself that can't keep up. This doesn't happen with DivX files though. Whether I'm playing a DVD disc or something from hard drive, I have to turn my TV up above normal. Not terribly bad, but this is the only device I have used on my HDMI port, so it could be my TV as well. Overall, very happy with this player, and does all I expected it to very well, and a few things I didn't expect it to. Price is very good too."

What's great about it: Does what it is advertised to do. Plays all of my DVDs that I had problems with on another DVD player.
What's not so great: Loading tray feels cheap
"Player does what it is advertised to do for the price (this is a basic player without all of the frills). This player plays all of the DVDs that I had problems with on another player. Menus and set-up are straight forward."

What's great about it: Plays everything, Slim design
What's not so great: Usb only for fat drives
"This is a great player. I mainly got it for the usb port. However, I was a little disappointed when I found out it only accepts fat formatted drives. But it's a great player overall and does what it's supposed to do very well. Phillips players are great because they'll play pretty much whatever you throw at them. Deserves a 4 because of the usb compatibility problem."

What's great about it: Great Playback on standard DVD's
What's not so great: Slow reaction time for remote
"I purchased this DVD up convert to go with a TV I purchased. I have a large collection of standard DVD's and this works great on my HD TV as it gives a higher quality picture than a standard DVD player and as my DVD's aren't in HD it upgrades the picture so that they are almost as good a quality as the more expensive HD DVD's."

What's great about it: Sleek DVD player that fits anywhere and plays anything
What's not so great: none
"Purchased for my daughter's college dorm room. She loves it! The player will play anything including
DVD+R without problems. This is the 3rd DVD player we have purchased for her and the first one for which we feel we received more than our money's worth. The remote is responsive, the player shows pictures that are clear and concise."

Fine Player for all my DVDs

What's great about it: Looks great with HDMI cable; USB port plays AVI movies
What's not so great: Remote feels like a handful of cards; tray seems thin and weak.
"I bought this machine to replace a Phillips DVP-642 player. With this player you can watch your DVD library in almost-HD quality ("Serenity" looked magnificent) without the expenditure to get a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD and re-buy your collection. This player will upconvert DVDs and movies on pen drives to 1080i if you have HDMI cables hooked up to you HDTV. The upconvert does not seen to be an option with composite or component cables. There is also a lack of a legacy SVideo port but frankly, that's not going to be an issue if you're looking for an upconvert player. The remote is small, feels a bit cheap and I just know it'll be lost in a cushion for a week someday. The DVD tray looks so fragil I'm worried about closing it too hard. Other than these two problems, I have no complaints and plan to buy another one of these players for the bedroom TV."

Decent upconverting player

What's great about it: Compatability, size, ease of use
What's not so great: response time
"This was an attmept to utilize our existing DVD collection without having to replace everything in High Def. This player has a quality picture and is easy to use. I have tested it with DivX files and it works great. The USB port is ok but I won't use it much because of our setup. The one minor pain I have is the response time when starting a movie. It takes the player a while to recognize. No big deal I guess. Anyway I would definitely recommend this if you are just getting into HD movies and have an extensive collection of standard discs."

What's great about it: Sleek design, works nicely
What's not so great: It's a LITTLE slow
"I bought this a little bit ago and I LOVE it!!!! It plays many different formats and has a GREAT picture on my 32" 720P..... It also looks reallly cool! The one complaint I have is that it has a little bit of a slow respose time when using the remote....but really......WHO CARES!!!!!!
It's a really good product."
